Bourbon

So I went to all the big liquor stores here in Springfield, MO trying to find some Weller's Antique to make some "Poor Mans Pappy" and was unsuccessful. When I asked about availability the comment I got was "good luck". I'm starting to wonder if I like WL Weller's so much and its becoming harder to find, should I just hoard it now? Don't find too many wheat whiskeys and that really seems to be what I prefer.

Anyone have any other wheat whiskeys they'd recommend??

Guess Im lucky, quite a few bottles near me :)

Wanna send a few my way???

Exactly how much is WL Weller 12 yr and can it still be found easily??

I believe Weller 12 and OWA are in the mid 20's to $30 range, if you can find them

Bill's Michigan wheat from New Holland is awesome. It might be hard for you to find though.

I've been wondering on this one. Will have to get some now.

There are a few wheated bourbons on the market:

1. Maker's Mark. Easy to find! The cask strength is actually pretty good if you like high alcohol stuff

2. Larceny. It's OK. No complaints, not something i buy, but would drink a bottle if it ended up in my basement

3. Old Fitzgerald. It's a classic and somewhat of a still hidden gem (if you can find it). Easy to get in KY... not sure about elsewhere.

Inspired by the beer thread, I got to thinking about my favorite bourbons. If any of you enjoy this great elixir, share your favorites and recs!

I got started into whiskey and bourbon in college (like everyone else) and developed a taste for affordable bourbons. Still to this day, I think one of the best things about bourbon is that you can get a top-notch bottle for around $50, which is almost unheard of in the scotch world. Thus, I've been able to try a variety and build a small collection at home. Here are some of my favorites, in semi-accurate rankings:

  1. Blanton's. Candy in a bottle, one of the smoothest bourbons you'll ever drink. Notes of maple, vanilla, and a little oak. Great neat, or on the rocks for an extra smooth drink.

Thank you for recommending Blanton's: I finally found a bottle a couple weeks ago, and was able to try it. I think it's my new favorite.

I love Blanton's ....but you can't get it really in Quebec anymore. The SAQ (exclusive government liquor distribution) doesn't stock it in 2016. Last year they did....gone to several stores and nothing.

But that's OK. I'm on manhattan's now. So i don't do it with fancy bourbon. I have a Bulleit, Wild Turkey and a Woodford. Add some bitters, vermouth and a cherry.....oh baby

here's a little recipe for your cheaper bourbon that I've been enjoying lately...

1/2 oz triple sec

1/4 oz cherry juice

1/2 oz sprite or lemonade

3-4 dashes of black walnut bitters

4 oz bourbon

the black walnut bitters really sets this apart!

I toured Buffalo Trace last year with some friends and of course tried a few samples afterwards. For "desert", the guide set us up with a shot of their Bourbon Cream (bourbon infused with real cream) and asked us to just drink half of it. He then topped off the shot glass with root beer. Delicious. I brought 4 bottles home for special occasions. Neat tour.

By the time we got over to Woodford their tours were closed but the tasting room was available.

Neat area of KY if you ever have time. Stayed at the Galt House and enjoyed Louisville.

Old Fitz. Wheat bourbon that is dirt cheap here in Kentucky. Not sure about the availability or the price elsewhere. For the price it can't be beat. I know a lot of big bourbon drinkers (myself included) that make this their cheap go to for everyday bourbon. If you enjoy a bourbon and coke, this makes an excellent one and is cheap enough nobody will look at you like you've desecrated the bourbon by adding Coke to it.

latest acquisitions: 3 of the 4 are Diageo products; I have heard that the Barterhouse and IW Harper are excellent, one thing is certain, that IW Harper bottle is too nice to just toss when I finish the bourbon! The Gifted Horse whiskey is truly bad, and is headed straight to use as a mixer (which is a shame considering the price tag). I'm always a fan of Jefferson's products, so I'm looking forward to testing the various test barrel finishes on those items (there are five diff 200 ml bottles in the box all with diff barrel tests)

I'm a Michters guy...but have a decent collection that includes Booker, Bakers, Blantons, Baysil Hayden, and a few others. Was lucky enough to try the Pappy 8, 12 and 20 this year at a local bar...and the 20 was on $35 a glass (it's $100 in Philly)....for the record I liked the 12 better than the 20.

wow....$35/glass for Pappy 20 at a bar is a steal, would make me worry they filled a bottle with something else...

The place is legit and the owner didnt want to rape the patrons like all the local liquor stores and bars do....he has a great clientele and does a great business so there's no need for him to play those type games and ruin a good thing.

Can anyone get a bottle of WL Weller Antique Special reserve, 12 Yr or Antique and ship it to me??

Even the 7yr will do.

weller antique is readily available in the MN area, but the 12 year is nowhere to be found and hasn't been available for months...

Want to send me a bottle of Antique and I'll PayPal you? Can't even special order at the local package store any longer and no one will ship to VA.

Or is that illegal?? Lol

you'd be talking about $50+ for me to go thru the post office hassle...any chance this retailer will ship to your locale?

I have a bottle of the Small Batch, its good but not as smooth as something like Eagle Rare, Woodford, Angels Envy etc.... It has more of the alcohol boozy finish..

I like to try different things but Eagle Rare and Angles Envy are basically all I buy now.

Got a bottle of Eagle Rare as a gift and while I've only had it a few times, its starting to grow on me. Glad to see its well liked around here as well. Bourbon is definitely a far cry from the light beer I'm accustomed to drinking as a college student, but I'm working on 'acquiring the taste' as they say. Looking forward to trying some more in the time to come.
