How to build an intimidating bag of clubs

A bag of clubs intimidating ..well no, but if that player who you are matched with while playing a par 5 first hole stands up on the tee and hits about a 320 yard drive ,Then hit a 4 iron to about 8 feet and then centre cuts the putt in the middle of the hole for a quick eagle , Now that might be intimidating especially if you start with a par

Today, 11/10/2012, I played golf with a 12 year old kid who's in the 7th grade. He might have been 4'11" and 90 pounds soaking wet. He was very mannerly and extremely soft-spoken. The round was slow and he was playing behind myself and another straggler. On the tee box of the third hole, we invited him to join us to break the monotony of waiting around for the slower groups in front of us. The kid had a sun stained junior Titleist stand bag and in that bag he had:

Taylor Made R11 Driver, 9* (Set to Std. Loft and Neutral setting), with a Samurai Junior flex/length shaft;
2x Titleist Hybrids (909 Heads I think) with the same Samurai Junior flex/length shafts as the driver;
Here's the kicker: A full set (3-PW) of Titleist 710MBs with old school cut Way down shafts;
A Fourteen Golf V4 Sand Wedge;
And California Series Scotty Cameron Newport

Now, I wouldn't give two sh!ts about any adult bagging that set up because there are so many posers but for a smallish 12 year old kid who has a lot of growing to do, that is one serious set of clubs. He hit his driver 180-200 yds right down the middle and he hits his irons just fine. You can tell that his father put a lot of time into his swing development and in a few years time, he'll be a force to be reckoned with.

I love golf

I should walk more and if I did my clubs would be in a stand bag but I love my cart bag mainly because of the putter tube. I know it sounds silly but it drives me crazy how so many bags dont accommodate the putter (with cover). I also dont see how using a hybrid or two would change the intimidation factor but the irons, wedges and even driver could.

Was a good read, already pretty easy to tell who can play and who can't based on their clubs. Some guys try to trick you by having a nice set of irons, shiny wedges and 3 or 4 matching RBZ or Titleist headcovers, but once they tee off on the first hole it becomes obvious they put wayy too much money into their bag for their skill level. Don't get me wrong I am not even close the the best player in my group of friends (I play at an 8 handicap). But it is fun when you get to a tournament to check out what clubs others are using and take a guess as to who will be in the running at the end.

I think my bag could be intimidating as a carry a full set of old school blades (MP-14), an 8* R11 set to 9*/neutral with an authentic Diamana Blue Board (not a "made for" job), srixon z-steel fwy metals (14.5*\18.5*), Callaway Jaws CC wedges (54*\58*), a Nike Method 003 putter, all situated/stuffed inside of an old Ping Mantis stand bag.

Truth of the matter is, I'm a mid capper that likes nice clubs/equipment. I don't think there's anything intimidating about posting 84 with that setup. Lol

I can always tell the good golfers by the hotel pool white towel dangling over their clubs from tournaments on the road. Also, the guy who says not to use rain suits must not play much in the rain. My rain suit and gloves have made a world of difference in college tournaments when it's pouring down rain for 6 hours. I'm more intimidated when a guy simply can't miss inside 8 feet. Screw all of your other clubs what model Scotty is that???

One of the guys on my team from this past weekend is a 7 cap and I kid you not this is his bag and gear that he used on Saturday.
If he got some decent clubs he would probably be much better than a 7. A driver that is from the 2000's at least. As for the irons I played some really good golf with a horrific looking set of Toski CB's in high school so you can get away with playing crappy irons. But I couldn't imagine trying to tee off with that driver.

I know this is satire but I come close except for the part about being scratch. 2 is the lowest I've been.
Bag ATM is : scratched up i15 with aftermarket shaft
beat up sonartec 3 wood
yes a v-steel 5 wood.
dinged up snake eyes mc-01 blades 3-pw with brown marks on the sweet spot and leading edge you could cut yourself on and oldschool lofts. (pw @49)
old rac black wedges 54 and 58
rife putter that is beat to hell with no headcover and cost me $25.
Don't have the towel and my bag is an old bridgestone cart bag that I was given. Don't ride though.
Don't claim to be a playa but it was amusing that the bag of my choice seems to measure up.

I love equipment too much when I develop in a sport, at one point I had 4 bowling balls...now just the one a few years on it and many patch jobs...and a falling apart roller bag.

My golf is in the first phase...but I am proud of my beater pro plat. Mid slant with a Winn grip and sharpie paintfill. I redid the top line with a file and dremel.

I am scared the most by forged irons that appear to have been beaten against large rocks most of their lives. Even more so if the 3 iron shows the most wear...

Slightly OT, how you like those Snake Eyes? Just about to shaft a set of heads that I got cheap on EBay.

I missed this thread too, good, funny article. Actually described my bag pretty closely.

910 Driver (although it's only the D2)
909 3 Wood
Mizuno MP60-67 combos
Mizuno Wedges
Cameron Putter with the old yellow headcover
Ping Latitude bag with generic headcovers and a plain white towel (and gloves attached to the straps).

Unfortuantly I do have a hybrid, but now I'm thinking; ditch the 3wood and put the old Mizuno MP-001 back in, substitue in the Vokey wedges, I've got the old Anser putter, toss the hybrid and I'm ready.......Now to just find some game!

That was a great post, very insightful and thoughtful really. I know that the reason scratch players play what they play is because it works and for scorers that is the only thing that is important. Unlike the wanna’bes who want to look like the guys on tour. Not saying that many a good player doesn’t play some new equipment, but he likely doesn’t have a completely new bag every season unless he’s got 40+ hrs per week to get to know how they all work and gain confidence in how they fit into his bag this season or get paid to (read professional).

I think the one’s here taking exception to your post are either taking it too literally, or are hurt because you haven’t described their bag. I’ve been beaten by some guys who claimed they were 10 handicaps who had a bag very similar to what you describe, now I know why. I have an old bag full of old clubs, partly because I think they work for me, but mostly because I’m too cheap to buy new stuff. Someday I’ll be worthy, if I live long enough.

Sorry for the long time replying. Just picked up the thread again.
I Like the mc-01's a lot actually. They are very low bounce that suit me with a sole grind and design that cuts through any turf or rough. They have a super soft feel and the thin profile, a little longer heel to toe that suits my eye. I find them pretty easy to hit and the long irons are no problem, their trajectory is excellent. Good luck with your build I hope you like them like I do.

One take some lessons and work on your game or two just be a poser with a fancy intimidation bag.

I choose the first option.

Oh dear... satire and sarcasm don't always play well on the internet, but c'mon tongue is firmly planted in cheek here.

there is a guy at the course i work at that is probably in his mid fifties, beer gut, always khakis and a non dri fit shirt. Plays by himself often and has an old set of blades that are all browned out with older woods with actual sock headcovers...not sock style...actual white tube socks. i have never seen him miss a shot. incredibly intimidating.

I just figured out another one today. A 46-48* stand alone wedge. Not the matching pitching wedge for your set of irons. Only players play a stand alone pitching wedge. I've never seen a mid handicapper with a stand alone pitching wedge. Throw some lead tape on there and guarantee that guy is a player.
