How to build an intimidating bag of clubs

Recommended Posts

The best golfer I know has played with an old FT-5, a exotics cb2 strong 3 wood, a set of MP 33's, and whatever old ping putter he recently picked up at play it again sports for years and years. He just recently upgraded his driver to a ping Anser, but only out of necessity.

Ping G15 10.5* w/ Prolaunch Red S
Ping G15 18.5* w/ Prolite fairway X
Ping G10 21* w/ Oban Revenge S
Ping i15 4-W w/ PX satin 6.0
Ping Tour S 52* & 56*, Eye 2 60*
Ping Anser 2 Pat. Pending Black satin

Best player I know plays Tour Burner Driver, Original Burner 3 wood, Titleist 710 CB's, Old TaylorMade Wedges, and a PING G2i.... His headcovers look like rags and bag is falling apart.

It's been 3 years (and it's like 30 years in WRX) so it probably would be great to make some updates.

Hmmmm, valid comment.

My wife confiscated my computer tonight and I can't type a long thing on my phone. But I will definitely do this!

I agree. It's time. Love the article but any bag with a belly putter in it is no longer intimidating. Nice headcovers in that pic though. As far as the clubs though, all those listed are still relevant and very gamerish. Is that a word?

Six year bump!

What does an intimidating golf bag look like in 2021? How old do the blades have to be? How many dents does the putter need to have? Wedges newer than the driver but older than the grips?

Firstly you must eschew hybrids. Fill that spot with blade like driving irons. Nothing screams playa like 18° and 21° driving irons that have a blade like appearance.

I think the most intimidating golf bag would have at least 3 different ball retrievers jammed in there.  I'd be terrified of the slow painful round ahead.

Maybe something like quarter-sized wear spots on the 3iron through wedge? 😲

That would be!

But the subject of the article was how a "poser" could look intimidating with his club choices haha. Would be hard for just anyone to do the above!

I get intimidated whenever I see someone with highly developed towel technique, especially older guys. When they have the wet/dry setup on the bag, the "never let em see you sweat" towel in the cart, and the "around the greens" towel that accompanies the wedges & putter, they're planning to eat dinner with someone else's money.

If you're unsure about a fourteenth club...

image.png.05601575ed465aabe9754ff731edaeb1.pngGet a Ping Eye2 1-iron. Pull it out of your bag and swing it a few times on the the first tee. This will unnerve your opponents big time!!!!

When the guy with the advanced towel technique asks "So what are we playing" on the first tee, that's when I should probably go grab a fishing rod and find a less expensive way to spend my next 4 hours.

Couple things I’ve noticed that tend to correlate to better players:

1. Old fairway woods with aftermarket shafts

2. non-stock grips, especially anything full cord

3. wedges without stock wedge flex shafts or wedges with thoughtful grind coverage

4. well worn but perfectly clean clubs

5. anyone who goes straight from hybrids to blades

I see someone whose bag has any 3 of the above 5 characteristics and I’m not playing for money that day.

Just keep your carry gun on the outside of the bag. It doesn't get anymore intimidating than that.

Nah, the opposite.  That you are likely too scared for words and that you might shoot a crow if it squawks in your backswing...
