My multi-millionaire ex-fiance, one way or another, gave me this ultimatum.

I'm single, on GolfWRX, and happy as ever. :D

As long as it is tax free, heck yeah but if I have to give half to my deadbeat Uncle Sam then the choice becomes a little tougher. As a matter of fact, I have been on a self-imposed sabbatical since July 2011, haven't even held a club in my hands. That will change this spring unless someone sends me a cool mil.

A millon dollars is a lot but I couldn't retire like some people are saying. Insurance for a family of four can't be cheap. Once I paid off the house and cars a good chunk would be gone. I'm too young IMO to retire off that amount and I don't have the financial savvy to make it work. Hard choice for sure. I too am a little surprised at the high number of yes answers.

my wife would kill me if I said "no". Logically i would have to agree. You can't retire with $1 million (especially here in the bay area, ca and DEFINITELY not at my age) but my house gets paid off, my debt is gone, I can still buy a nice new truck, and the rest of the money i'd save or invest. I've also had a few other "expensive" hobbies that I dropped for golf that I wouldn't mind getting back into if it were economically feasable (i.e. motorcycles, bowling, arcade game collecting, etc...).

First thing is thank God this is a decision I don't HAVE to make,

Second thing is I would learn to hate the $1 million because it would have caused me to give up the one hobby and activity that has been primary for me for 45 years. It's like asking would you part with a member of the family or do something against your principles for $1 million. Sometimes the money would cause more pain than it would cure.

I would have to say no and hope the wife would understand. I think she would cause when I met her 40 years ago I was playing 18/36 on Saturday and 18 on Sunday. I'm also at a stage of life when when I'm hoping to play more as I get closer to retirement.

No. Money can't buy happiness.
[/quote]

You know, we've all heard that adage so much that I think a lot of people have become desensitized to it. The way wealth and celebrity is worshipped in America doesn't help either. I think alot of people think if they just had a little more of this or that (could be money, could be something else), that all of their problems would be solved, and they'd be significantly happier. Studies have shown, however, that income above a certain amount doesn't translate to more happiness. I can't quote any data now, but the study I'm referring to essentially said happiness does go up as income goes up, but only to a certain point. I don't recall any exact amount of money, but the gist of it was that once people earned an amount of money that allowed them to live comfortably, but not extravagantly, happiness did not go up with increasing income beyond that. I think that it actually started going down at some point (don't quote me on that part). Again, i don't recall exactly, but the annual wage at which happiness didn't go up anymore was surprisingly low...I'm thinking less than $100K.

My bet is alot of people saying they'd take the million bucks would be sick of that deal in five years or less.

Wow - I'm impressed by all the no's.

Just goes to show what a great game it is. If you showed this thread to a non-golfer, they would be in shock.

And that a million dollars isn't what it once was.
Pick any hobby/past-time someone really enjoys and I bet you'd see a similar response.

I mean right now. Cold turkey. Clubs gone. Golfwrx gone. Golf magazines gone. Can't talk about it. Ever.

And you get $1,000,000.

Yes or No?
