G25 Iron Review (Low Handicapper)

Instant Offense

Recommended Posts

Finally pulled the trigger on some g25s w/kbs tour - coming from ap2 710 w/s300.

Range session was solid - high&straight - looking forward to getting these on the course.

What's everyone who is gaming these doing with wedge setup? I typically game 52/58 off a 47* P.
My set does include the U-wedge, but I left it in the closet since the 52 is my go-to around the green.

because of the stronger lofts I had to adapt my Gap Wedge a little. I have now a Ping Gorge 50 SS bent to 51 (played the 52 before) and the 56 WS.

I stayed with 52/58. It works, but I am not completely happy with it. Since I also have a wedge set of 54/60, I think about getting a matching 48 with that. On the other hand, I know that too many wedge options often confuse me more than they help me, so I am still undecided.

I see a gap. There definitely is a gap.

Just another check-in on this thread. Played my frist round in over a month last Saturday. Hit it OK at best (and I mean like the best way to describe the ball striking of my round was bleh), 16/18 greens on a 7,000 yard course, 34 putts, 71 (-1).

These things are just amazing. On number 6, I had 222 left to the pin with a carry of about 195-200 to clear water short of the green into a slight breeze, hit 2" behind the 4 iron and put it on the front edge (so probably 205 carry). It's a terrible strike but these clubs alone kept that ball from getting wet and adding atleast 2 strokes to the round on that single shot.

The S55s look sexy, but you'll have to pry my G25s out of my cold dead hands.

I dunno, but have read on here that bending open the lofts screws up the bounce of the club. With the G25 the PW & UW being 45 and 50 degrees respectively, I just added on a Tour S 56° SW and have decent gaps. If needed I can open up the SW slightly to turn it into a 58°Lob Wedge. Life is good!

It doesn't screw up the bounce necessarily, but it does change it. You lose a degree of bounce for every degree you strengthen the loft, so if you bend a 60* with 12* of bounce to 58*, the bounce would be reduced to 10*. Some people like to do this with Ping set wedges to reduce the bounce anyway.

Ordered a set of G25's on 8/7; my first new irons in many years after playing i5's. It was a custom order; white dot, 1" long, midsize grips.

The store called the order in on the morning of 8/8; the clubs arrived in GA on the afternoon of 8/16. I was out of town and didn't pick them up until last night, and played my first round with them today.

They are all that I had hoped. They look almost exactly like my i5's, but much easier to hit and much more forgiving. Great product, by far the best of the G series irons IMO.

These are growing on me...I will say that, at least for me, adjusting to the offset vs that of a players club (s56) took more time and effort than I anticipated (weeks for me). Now, I have a ton of confidence that I will hit a high, straight shot. I have noticed that the ball does not seem to "drive" forward through the air the way my s56 irons did. It may be different shafts, but the flight looks "floaty" not driving. I have not experienced distance loss, but it looks like a less powerful flight. Now, I just need to resist the temptation of the s55 pics lol

The S series, especially the 55s look dead sexy, but whats the point if you can't score your best with it...the G25s stay in the bag.

Most importantly...my fun-o-meter has gone way up with these irons......

I hit some shots and just chuckle....long straight and high. (I'm a 9 and came from i5's and a brief affair with i20's)

Starting to love the S wedge as well.....nice and easy from 85 yards...lands like a butterfly with sunburned feet...

This is exactly what happened with me, devote i5 player, saw the i20s and gave em a whirl, went running back to the i5s with my tail between my legs, and just rolled the dice with the g25s, and loving every minute of it now.

The W/S/Gorge wedges are great as well. I feel like Ping has really made some advancements from their M/B wedge that came out so many moons ago.

I remember waiting for my 13 club G25 order and reading this thread when it was only up to 7 or 8 pages, reading all the posts about remarkable distance forgiveness, thinking oh come on. It's unreal, coming from TM tp MC's, I get 1 to 3 shots a round that are a groove or two low that just consistently travel to the front if the greens releasing maybe 10 to 15 feet more than normal, turning up and down opportunities to routine 2 putts. This is one line where I can HONESTLY say the hype is REAL and more importantly, it don't wear off. Lol

How many of you guys playing the G25 irons also play the fairways or hybrids? I just picked up a 23* hybrid to replace the 20* G20 hybrid I finally gave up on. I thought the irons were good clubs. The hybrid might be even easier to hit than the irons. This 23* G25 goes higher and farther than the 20* G20 it replaced.

Are the G25 woods just as stupid easy to hit as the rest of the G25 line?

Holy $h1t! You weren't striking it well that round and shot a -1 from 7000 yard tees and hit 16 of 18 greens? OMG. I'm playing i5s right now and hit them pretty good, but this thread is really making me want to demo a set of G25s on an actual round of golf too see how my GIRs gets affected! I only hit 4-10 greens on average and the only thing that keeps me shooting in the high 70s and low to mid 80s is my chipping and putting. When those two things are off, the score creeps up into the high 80s! Grrrr.

Will I look like a poser with G25 series from driver to PW? ;P

One thing I still have to get used to:
Irons with smaller heads tend to turn over when hitting out of the rough. The G25s have a tendency to stay open, at least for me.
[/quote]

That seems like a benefit! You've just already adjusted to a drawback of another design and have to unadjust.

Back with the G25's after a stint with 710mbs & 712 AP2's. 712's are backup. The 712s still work great but man are the G25's on another level when it comes to forgiveness and hitting greens.

Shot -1 at Moorpark CC (playing the 2 toughest 9's) my last round. In fact shot 2 under on one of the nines and only missed one green (misjudged distance but still made par) Freaking incredible clubs. I played Moorpark twice with the G25's and shot under par both times. I've never shot under at Moorpark until I put the G25's in the bag.

I remember reading with interest that you had abandoned the G25 for your Titleist. I figured it would happen for some people, not all clubs are completely right for everybody. I fooled around one time with my MP32 and went running back to the G25s.

Welcome back and congrats on the great rounds. Speaks volumes for a club when you can shoot a personal best on a course you have played before. I have done that on two different courses since getting the G25s in May.

Fitting on Monday - going in with open mind, but going to be G25 vs MP54 battle. I'm leaning G25 w/C-taper - hoping this is finally the holy grail for me as far as straight, non ballooning trajectory, hook free!
