Lovely to watch, but how does the Tour STOP the rash of sub 60 rounds

Guys,

I don't know the answer, but I'm pretty sure that changing the ball will never happen, particularly when the golf business is struggling.

More length hasn't worked.

Should the courses be made tighter, with more bunkers and/or rough? I'm not sure because I don't want it to be too penal and see every course set up like a US Open with +1 winning.

What do you think?

Why would they wish to do that? The professional tours are all just a business. Their purpose in existance is to make money and money comes from television advertising. Low scores sell Viagra and luxury cars to old white men.

What makes anyone think they want to stop it? After all, Chicks dig the long ball.

Nobody is shooting 59 at Torrey, Augusta National, etc. this Spring. Easy courses and conditions will sort themselves out.

THISSSS!!!!!!!!!!

This is Pro-Am event. This course is set up pretty easy.

Also the ball has nothing to do with it. Some people don't realize how much information these guys on Tour have access towards in regards to GREEN READING. The have books that the degrees of slope for every nick and cranny on the green. The grain books, their yardage books show the pitch. Also they are putting on perfect greens.

Carry it 260 - roll out to 290-300. No rough...everything flat...perfect greens and conditions. If they didn't carry some length they would be an amusement park.

Not sure it's an issue. In almost every sport increased offense is better for ratings.

I do like the irony a bit though, because a lot of the same people who defend US opens at +5 by saying par is just a number, are the same types that complain about 59's being a problem

I think there is room for a happy medium, but over par scores at the US Open is ridiculous too. The other side of this is where 59 happens more often and people lose interest.

Agreed there's a balance that's important, but we're very far from this being a problem with average viewers

The NBA has had some discussion about the growing 3pt trends, but I think most people also feel there that the game is still more exciting now than its been in the past.

Sports change because athletes get better and more efficient and capitalized. It's like I posted in another thread, the 100m dash time keeps going down. Scores in golf would regardless of equipment

Grow the rough, narrow the fairways, make reachable par 5s, par 4s. Otherwise, USGA up the courses.

I agree. Some of the finishing scores are in the -20s, which means the course is playing too easy. No need to make courses longer or roll back equipment. Just do what you suggested. These guys are professionals, they should be challenged. Bomb and gouge is boring.

This.

The USGA really messed up by letting the ball and clubhead size of the driver get away from them.

Really? Golf is now less fun for you?

I'm pretty sure Geiberger was playing a ball and clubhead within your specifications when he shot 59.

I also think the Big Bertha was just introduced when Chip Beck shot 59, so, he did it with old equipment. In fact, he gave his back up set of irons to the pro where I worked They were Wilson Staff blades with X300 shafts, tipped an inch. Our pro didn't think he could get it airborne with those clubs!

You see a lot of that. I read somewhere that the fairways are cut and rolled so they will get those 300+ yard drives. When they play a really wet course, which is rare, most are hitting pretty long clubs into the green.

And while we're at it require guttapercha balls and outlaw lawn mowers, use only sheep. I can't believe the sheer stupidity on this topic. Why not decree that no more records can be beaten in track?
