Rory McIlroy Ball Change Soon?

GolfGrouch

Recommended Posts

According to McIlroy, "I need to change my golf ball. That's a big thing, I thought my golf ball this week was doing weird things in the wind. It was very inconsistent so there's one thing I will change and try to work on the next few weeks."

The PR department at Titleist must be in full damage control mode by now, but what can they do about it?

I wonder what ball Rory will tee up at Erin Hills...

All those missed fairways, GIRs and putts were definitely down to the ball. :russian_roulette:

AD333 Tour - solid in the wind. lol

Marrying up equipment with the ball is an under rated piece of tour work. I can recall Rory spending a week+ on a closed range to get the Covert to marry up with prototype balls Nike was producing for him. That's hard yards. He's working through that again with Callaway and Titleist. As long as he doesn't break out the empsom salts he'll be fine.

* On a side note, the US commentary on 24mph "gusts" was excruciating. By their same logic no one at The Open will beak 90. Without a doubt "swirling" we the most overused word.

Yeah, it was nothing to do with the swirling winds at Augusta, you know those winds that we are told every year are so hard to read because they swirl so much.

Anyone else thinking that because he now can, Rory is just turning into a full on ho? A couple of weeks ago he had shiny new irons instead of his raw ones, then the Callaway fairway woods needed to be changed and now it's the ball.

No contract is both a blessing and a curse. But i do agree with the Prov1 not being a good wind ball. I switched to the XV and it's night and day.

Sounds like I need to give it a try. I'm still looking for a good ball!

I was going to ask if he was playing the v1 or the v1x but it looks like he's playing the x. I honestly love the prov1x, but I love any lowish spinning tour ball. TM and Bridgestone make excellent balls as well!

Certainly many great balls to choose from.

If he makes a change it wouldn't surprise me to see him playing a Callaway ball. He seemed to like the Nike RZN Tour he was using which was designed by Rock Ishi. Since Rock is now with Callaway it seems that they could develop something that would suit Rory; providing they can work around all the patent issues.

If they make him a one-off prototype ball that wasn't offered for sale, would they even need to worry about working around the patents?

I'm interested to hear what issues people are having using the v1x in the wind? I play ALOT of windy golf and I've never noticed an issue. What am I missing by using this ball?

if you are a high spin player ( irons wedges or driver) its a high spin ball... high launch high spin into swirling winds equals no good.... Notice he swapped 3 woods at augusta too? he said he needed a lower spinning 3 wood for the tee... so he was fighting high spin issue before hand and trying to bandaid it with club swaps.... Im sure he loves it around the greens and hates it off the tee.. thats me... I love it on a 3/4 wedge shot.. hate it off driver or long irons.... and into the wind its no comparison between a ball like the 330s and the v1x... none at all

I think I just might agree. Still early for me to tell as I've only spent one day outside putting with the ball and indoor 10 footers a few nights a week over the winter. I've also gone from a Studio Stainless to a Queen Bee #9, more than one variable. Love the ball otherwise, used one for 27 holes and roughly 12 full wedge shots and cover held up much better than the v1x. Also felt very stable in the winds of Newport RI.

the XV in the wind is no joke. played in about 25mph winds a little over a month ago and i couldn't hit it any straighter despite the wind. great, underrated ball for sure! just not a fan of it off the putter.

He would be a fool not to try out the ZStars, both are super stable in the wind. The Bridgestone would be an interesting move, but very possible. Highly likely would be finding an iteration of the ProV that he likes best. Callaway would seem like an odd switch; other than the fact that the former Nike ball guru is at Callaway now, so maybe some prototype action. TP5 line has been hot this year though too!!
