Is "scripted" outfits for touring pros THE MOST LAME THING EVER?

I get it: you're a touring professional with a nice clothing endorsement deal but do you have to follow every single marching order? This business of companies (Nike, Puma, Adidas, etc.) annoucing what their pros will be wearing a week in advance is just pathetic. Tiger and Nike have been doing this for years... all in an effort to get gullible wanna-be's to order more merch. (You think TW by himself came up with the idea of wearing all mock-turtles at the Masters? Ha! Blatant cash-grab.)

Reasons? 1) Nobody cares 2) Adult males can't pick out a shirt and slacks without help? 3) You really think I'm going to run out and buy an orange shirt because Fowler will be wearing (another) one?

Extra lame: golf websites who fall for the gimmick and shill for these companies by headling articles with "Here's what Billy Horschel will be wearing at the PGA." (Looking at YOU, Golfwrx!)

Well, folks laughed at Nike when they gave Tiger Woods a 10 million dollar a year contract to start a golf club line, wear their brand and allowed him to start his own brand (the TW) ala Michael Jordan....I think Nike did OK. While the club line was a bust, half the golf world wears the NIKE brand. Nike even stuck with TW during his scandal....well played, good move NIKE!

I think it is great. Who knows what these guys would look like if left to their own devices.

Compared to the stuff the pros used to wear 10, 20, 30 years ago...everything is an improvement..even blade collars

I'd imagine the pros have a say in what they're wearing, so really it's just about putting stuff together in advance...a smart idea that lets you focus on golf and puts some extra coin in your pocket.

I'm cheap...so the only time I'm buying this stuff in on the clearance rack at the end of the season. Clearly, I'm not their target audience!

Just note that everything you wear on the course today will look lame in 10-15 years. Time stops for no man.

Yup - those triple pleated trousers and forearm length polos were once de rigeur on tour

You're making my point, actually. Of COURSE it helps drive sales; that's the objective but _**does that make it right? **_ Is everything** about Selling, Revenue and Branding? Think about it... how pathetic is it that today's college-educated touring pro isn't even ALLOWED to pick his own outfit for a big event -- it's done by a "fashion co-ordinator" that the pro doesn't even know. Come on... do you think Arnie or Jack had someone pick their outfits a few weeks in advance? Doubtful.

I'm not questioning the obvious marketing aspects of "scripting" a series of outfits; I'm just saying that it's still freaking LAME. (As is the announcement of said outfits a week in advance.)

I read a story a while back where the pros are highly involved in the scripting process. The folks with the company give suggestions but the final call is with the pro.

Doesn't get me excited but its just marketing perfectly designed for the social media age.

The Nike hats are cool IMO, their Augusta ones were great too but I seem to be in the minority here.

Is it lame? Yes and no in my opinion. I think having them all wear the same gear or same colour on any given day is naff.

Putting them out in new threads however is just good marketing. I agree, grown men can pick their own clothes and 99% of the time I don't bother a jot what someone on the TV is wearing but there have been a couple of times I can remember when I thought, that golf shirt looks pretty sweet. Google it, and then go find the model and order online.
