Random Bandon Thread

Hey guys - for anyone interested, we just had to cancel our trip this upcoming July (7/16-7/18). we had a group of 12 slated to go so a bunch of tee times should now be available (plus a bunch of rooms in Lily Pond). Below is what we had scheduled. It's a sad day but rolled it to next year.

First trip was scheduled for Late March and obviously it got cancelled. Thankfully they were able to reschedule us June 7-10 and we can hardly wait. Here is what we have scheduled.

IamRyanFrank - itin looks good. But on the 7th you should go for 18. And then play Preserve as a third round on the 8th or 9th. You can tee off at 8pm on Preserve and still finish before dark.

Sheep ranch in the pm is going to be WINDY. Maybe flip SR and Trails?

I'm not sure if it's too late, but you might consider trying to get sheep ranch in the morning....that'd s the windiest course we have on property by a long shot. Unless you catch a perfect day it's gonna be a 4 club (minimum) wind on some of the holes. But I'd imagine those morning slots are gonna be hot commodities so it may not be an option but it might be worth a try.

No problem man! Trails in the afternoon is definitely the move. It'll be nice and warm without much wind until the finishing stretch. Sheep ranch will be so pure in the mornings. I'm definitely jealous of y'all. We'll only ever get play it in the afternoon in STIFF breezes ?

Is it more or less expensive for someone from the East Coast to go to Bandon or Ireland?

Having done Scotland in 2018 and Bandon this fall I can say - its way more to go to Bandon all things being equal (time of year, rounds played etc).

Although I guess I should caveat and say "it depends". If you go to Bandon in December and play one round a day maybe its about the same as a summer trip to Ireland. But from the DC area at least its also way less time to fly to Ireland/Scotland - and so much easier!

Often times to fly to Shannon, Ire is really cheap and then you do the west coast of Ireland golf. If you do it yourself and stay in small bnbs and plan your golf, you can do it cheaper. But I bet if you put the costs together - they probably come out close except for the room. Staying at Bandon will be the biggest cost differential.

Has anyone heard anything about the possibility of a course camera coming online for the sheep ranch now that it is officially open? Does the sheep ranch club house have good line of sight to the holes on the coast line? I enjoy checking out the course cameras periodically and it would be great to see some new views...

This. You can cut things up however you want to prove which is better value or straight up costs more/less. For the same number of days, with the same number of rounds, it'll be in the same ball park.

They're both links golf, the similarities end there. If you are putting together a pro/con list to decide which to pick, price would be nearer the bottom IMHO.

Gotta use them Southwest miles to get to Portland, then use them National free rental car days, then use them Marriott points to stay the day before golf starts in Eugene!

I'm sure they'll have one in the near future...there's still a bit of construction going on around the site, so it may be a month or so but they'll definitely have one.

 

As far as views from the clubhouse go, it's got some of the best. It sits at basically the highest point on the course behind 18 with a panoramic of the course/coastline.

We are going next week, there are 3 of us, we are playing 36 for 3 days. We planned on just walking to save on costs, but I am starting to think we need a caddie. Has anyone ever used a group caddie here? What would the cost be person, it says on the website probably $40 a person but then should there be a tip on top of that?

IMHO I don't see the point of a forecaddie at Bandon (vast majority of holes are laid out in front of you). Get one to shoulder your bag for you by all means, but otherwise a yardage book and pin sheet is fine.

Agreed. If you've ever played a new course before without guidance and figured it out, you'll figure it out at Bandon. The yardage books are good enough.

Only real advantage is green reading, and some caddies are better at it than others.

That and carrying bags and finding balls. I saved a lot of money on just him finding my balls (golf balls)...my wife has the other set.

Not sure if this has been posted, but Erik Anders Lang is doing a YouTube series on Bandon. Breaks up each video into 9-hole stretches. He's done SR, and just posted the front at PD. Pretty neat.

Anyone know which course will host the US Amateur stroke play? I think I saw Bandon Trails a while back but can't seem to confirm on any website. I'm headed there the week after the tournament concludes, wondering what kind of conditions I will encounter. I played Old Mac a few days after the USGA four ball and the conditions were pretty tough.

There will be a round at Trails and one at bandon for the stroke play and bandon will have the match play.

Headed to Bandon in mid August. Recommendations for what to take, what to wear, any certain gear suggested? What to expect weather wise? One pair of shoes or multiple, soft spikes/hard spikes, etc...

Which irons better suited? Callaway Apex CF19 or PING G410? I’m a picker, not a digger.

Is there any reason to take a 58*wedge? I found the 58* pretty useless in Scotland as the play was to run it up/ putt. That stated, some courses (hard sand) I use the 58* out of bunkers due to less bounce, soft sand I use the 54*.

Weather will generally be upper 60's and windy, but there's always a chance of rain, so don't leave the rain gear at home, even if it turns out you don't need it. If you're planning multiple rounds a day, bring a couple pairs of your most comfortable shoes, regardless of type. I can't comment on the specific irons, but I always recommend to people not to mess around with your equipment too much, just do whatever you are most comfortable with. You are correct that the 58 won't be used much, but it doesn't hurt to have it for the occasional deep bunker shot. I always just bring the clubs I'm used to.

end up in the left bunker on #14 at the Trails and you'll wish you had a 64 degree if the pin is up front.

Most are better off using 7,8,9 iron when around the greens but it really depends on your wedge game and what you're used too. Like above, play what you're comfortable with.
