It's really interesting that she's not old enough to compete in AJGA events.
Her handicap is that she is built like an 11 year old. She couldn't hit a single par 5 in two in an AJGA event - even if she was allowed to compete. They often play those girls at NCAA yardages. She would have to add 4 strokes to her round before she even gets out of the car at the tournament.

I thought it was funny to hear that if she were just an attendee at the USWO, she would get free admission. But I guess there's a zillion ways to put this in perspective. Not even old enough to watch all the "Harry Potter" movies, probably not tall enough to ride every ride at Six Flags, etc, etc ad nauseum.

No problem with her being at the Open if she truly loves it.

I hope her parents aren't "hockey dads". I've seen a lot of near abuse from the asian parents when it comes to junior golf. First hand experience at many AJGA and Callaway Junior Worlds.

Not saying that's the case here, but if she qualified for the US Open at age 11 she was certainly beating her local club professional 28 months ago when she was 8 years old. Reaching that end requires an excessive amount of effort and time.

The "time" is where the abuse comes in. Can't think of any 8 year olds that have the maturity to practice efficiently enough to reach that end. The operative word is "efficiently". No 8 year old, no matter how gifted, has the maturity and knowledge built in to reach that level. And they aren't coming to their parents saying "I'd like to take my game to the next level, mommy and daddy, what can we do?"
It is amazing that more people don't get this.

I have watched and am very suspect of their yardages. I get my info from a LPGA pro that I play with occasionally at my home course. She hits it about 250-260 and says she is long by tour standards and says TV makes it sound much better than it truly is. She plays the back tees and plays the money games and is on par with the +2-+3 handicap guys at our club. She has finished in the top 50 earnings a few times so she is decent. I trust what she says since she has been out there,
Sounds fair but given there's only one girl with a measured average under 230 out of 161 I'm happy to believe 250 is Ms Average on tour. 260 is long mind you, 270+ is bomber status, 230 is way short..

Out of interest does your local have stats on the LPGA site? I wonder if they are similar to what you've seen.
I won't out her because she does browse here but this year she is around 250.

That is this year's number, but looking back, she has been within 5 yards or so of this since she has been on tour.

I was walking into the clubhouse before my round yesterday. Junior clinic/tournament was wrapping up. About 6 10-12 year old boys were talking outside the clubhouse as I passed by.

Kid 1: "Man, basketball camp is wearing me out."
Kid 2: "Why do you play then?"
Kid 1: "I don't know. I needed to lose some weight." (Kid is a rail.)

I dunno....we played as kids. There weren't "camps" for everything and not every activity was a supervised one.
Even just "run of the mill" kids seem to be losing out on being KIDS to a large degree. Let alone some golf prodigy.

Got to agree with Lewis. I used to swim competitively until my parents had the sense to stop me as I wasn't enjoying it and the rest of my team were terrified of the pushy parents group. An 11 year old should be out playing with her friends and not being pushed into the limelight. This couldn't happen with the boys as no 11 year old on the planet has the firepower to play a major venue.
A 14 year old boy played in last year's Men's Open. Isn't that roughly the same thing? If she wants to play and qualified, she should play. I certainly don't know enough about her family to say whether or not her parents are "pushing" her into this, but on the surface, at least, she seems pretty well grounded.
If roughly the same is three years older then i guess it is roughly the same.

If every time a golfer expresses an opinion, people overreact and they get called haters and various other things, then don't be surprised when golfers say nothing of consequence at press conferences. They we get to complain that they are all soulless robots that never say anything of consequence or controversial. I saw the press conference and it certainly wasn't that negative. She expressed her opinion, now she is a hater?

Quite a bit if misinformation in this thread with regard to Stacy Lewis' comments. I know the media loves controversy, but I did not find Stacy Lewis' comments the least bit controversial or hateful in any way toward 11 year old Lucy Li. The very topic title of this thread is misleading and inflammatory.

Other than the fact Lewis said "well she qualified, guess we can't do anything about it." If Lewis didn't want the controversy, "no comment" is always suitable. Li tied Gulbis and beat Korda today, not bad for an 11 year old. An 11 year old just shot 78 on a course that 99% of members here would shoot 85 or above on unless we were playing message board golf (our favorite game here).
At my tiny little club, there was a clamor for more kid activities. I helped with a four week series of golf lessons and activities, one evening each week. The first week, we had 25 kids, which was amazing, given where I live. Second week, 19, because of conflicts with a football camp. Third week, 12, basketball camp and cheerleader camp. Fourth week, which was going to include hotdogs etc,, 4, conflicts with receiver camp and cross country camp. When we started, the volunteers were basically herding cats, trying to keep the kids from walking into swings. By the end, we had one volunteer per child, plus the parents of those four, who were too young to be in the camp cycle. One of the boys went to three camps after the first week, and he was in the 5th grade. OT, I realize, but like Divots, I wonder if these kids ever just play. Of course, I live in Texas, where life in general is arranged around sports.

She complains about everything and more often than not she is off base in her rants. Last year and years previous she was crying that they don't get paid nearly as much as the men implying that there is some sort of sexism. No Stacy, its purely economics. People will pay top dollar to watch the best. The LPGA is the best at their level for women but that level is not nearly close to the PGA Tour. She tries to argue apples to apples but its clearly an apples to oranges comparison. If the ladies played at the level of the men and the men played at the level of the ladies then the ladies would be paid more.

I'm not at all surprised she would come out all negative about this. She is always feeling slighted about something. I'm surprised she didn't complain about having to play Pinehurst No 2 after the men.

It actually does, Stacy is mad because an 11 year old is stealing the limelight. The 11 year old could shoot 100 and we would still talk about her qualifying. She is in a no lose situation with an amazing experience. Stacy should have played the bigger person and congratulated her for qualifying (more the Michelle Wie did to get invited a few years back http://www.thegolfblog.com/2004/05/michelle-wie-invited-to-us-open-womens.html). This is typical of Lewis, fugly and speaking out of turn gets you no where, she needs to master one and I'm guessing surgery isn't in her future so there is always hope. Hope she reads this so she can feel slightly bullied.....doesn't feel good does it. Lewis had nothing to gain by these comments and only further shows the LPGA is against different like the Asian comments from a few years back by another player. I guess when you feel intimidated you attack, but to show anything other than joy for a child that plays the sport better than most adults is embarrassing and shows a high level of fear and immaturity. Unless Lewis shot 59 today, no one would have mentioned her name if not for her comments.
