Blade users thread (NO DEBATING CLUBHEADS! NO Buy Sell Trade!)

Yh I play mainly on my own so nothing to do with posing - I guess the feeling silly bit was just that as I'd taken the choice of putting a set of irons in the bag that play on a knife edge (compared to giant headed cavity backs) in terms of feel and result, and substituting the 3i from the bag - arguably the most rewarding club in the bag to hit well and the producer of probably the majority of my best shot memories - with a club as easy to hit as a shovel 7 iron with a totally different shot and feel characteristic somehow goes against the reason why I put blades in the bag in the first place.

OK you blade aficionados........

What do you think of a set of heads like these?

Very small offset with a beautiful sweep of the hosel to the top line.

I just aquired a full set of these heads from a clubmaking friend of mine. (3-GW)

With the cropping of the picture, it's pretty hard to work out size, but it does look like a compact head with a fairly thickish topline. I like Bladehunter's guess ofCobra Amp Forged, but I suspect there's an M. Night Shyalaman-style takeaway in that it's actually a cavity back (or we've actually been dead the whole time).

I had that thought too and would make sense as to why no rear pics. Wont make any points though. Most here have loved a CB at some time or another. We all know that there are CB irons that look great at address.

The hint I need is old or new ? The grooves look new but the hosel to blade transition looks 90s Titleist or staff.

I want to have a new set of blades built. Not sure I want to go the expense of the Miuras but I want a quality head that I can match with my shaft preference. I believe once one gets fitted into the correct shaft for blades the blades get as easy to hit as anything else. At least the do for me. Any suggestions on the blade heads?

Maybe 1000 so if I can find some like that, it would definitely be within budget!

If you really want quality, then you cannot go wrong with Miura.

On my Retros...they were listed on ebay for $650 or best offer. Pics were awesome and I had been looking for a deal for months and lost a few auctions prior to then. So I *thought* I would low ball and offer the seller $100 less. I don't think I low balled enough because he took the offer in less than a day. Makes me think I could have gotten them for $500. Point being, if you are patient you can get a good deal on some Miuras (or Miura-Gikens) that is well within your budget. And again, Miura blades are of the highest quality. They are worth every penny, IMHO.

OK guys..... believe it or not, they are Adams GT's.

A often overlooked set because of the crap Bimatrix .400 bore hosel. I am having a machine shop make me up some serrated sleeves so the heads can accept the epoxy along with .370 tip Dynamic Gold S300's.

They are not blades as far as purists go, but the minimal offset, beautiful hosel transition, and thin(ish) top line remind me a lot of the Macgregors in my avatar picture. I played the Tourney ColoKrom's for over 25 years.

I will put these together over the winter over some beers with a clubmaking friend of mine.

John L, those Adams GTs won't feel like blades. The looks at address are fine, but because of the CB design you won't get the same feel (and workability since this is tied to feel) as with a blade...all other things equal.

I had a set before Deninny. They had the Bimatrix Tour stiff shafts. I broke the 5 iron shaft hitting too close to a tree root while playing in the Virginia Beach Amateur back in 2008. I had a sleeve made to accept a steel shaft DG S300 and believe it or not, it felt and played better than the rest of the set. I let the clubs go thinking that I could get my old Macgregors refinished, but nobody would touch copper faced clubs any longer due to the EPA regulations.....or so they said.

It is a very soft feeling club for being cast head.........the softest I have ever hit anyways. As far as workability, they were very similar to my Tourneys.

Yeah I split hairs on workability (as a blades 'snob'). It is a subtle difference. I could not tell workability differences between mp60s and AP2s as compared to mp67s unless I was doing a side by side immediate comparison. Not saying your experience was wrong, but LOL I challenge you to do a direct comparison (of workability and feel) of 6is between your Tourneys and those. Then let's compare notes again.

BTW those Tourneys in your avatar are sweet!

No great surprise this, but I had a set of those for a while, 1-SW, DGS300 shafts. They were sent to me by a gent in California. He'd held on to them as a project of sorts, had completely lost interest, decided to just send them to me because he thought I'd appreciate them more.

I was quite touched.

I wound up giving them to a friend of mine who moved here from Arizona, and after a few years moved back. He is a Snake Eyes 600B player, and commented that he would just love having a set like that. They were just sitting in my garage, so I gave them to him. Kind of a "pay it forward" thing. :)

I'm not a purist. I am a guy with one set of golf clubs. Those aren't blades. Not even in a loose interpretation. :dntknw:They aren't bad looking, but total moped pulling up to a biker bar. I like hearing about project clubs though so all is not lost.

If anyone wants a older set of Titleist 80's model heads to play around or experiment with, I have these laying around. They have been rode hard and put up wet, but there is still some life left to them. I was going to put some recycled tapered tip DG's in them and tinker with length and lies, but I am going with the Adams GT's instead.

2-PW

If anyone wants them, just cover the cost of shipping and they are yours.

To second DeNinny, I picked up a set of used Retros in the same price range. They are no doubt incredible clubs, and I don't regret the purchase one bit.

I will be entirely honest though, I would regret it if I paid for a new set. I am a 7 cap who will never be mistaken for a finesse player, and blindfolded I couldn't tell the Miura's apart from my Mizunos or Cobra Fly Z Pros. I know this is a dead horse, but even for $1000 don't buy them unless you either feel you absolutely need to or can confirm they are your cup of tea.

I can't speak to anybody else's tastes or preferences, but they are still a golf club. They won't make you a better player by default because they are higher quality.

Only 300 pages.

So much for all the modern day predictions that blades are dead or that players are no longer interested in them.

Yeah agree,

Went to range last week, one I normally do not visit.

6 young guys there, 4 of them were hitting MB's.

I have never seen that on any range anytime in the last 25 years I have been playing golf.

When I bagged my shiny Hogans, I was a little apprehensive about 'judgement'. Funny thing was I get guys walking up to me in admiration, like I was driving a 67 GTO, wanting to talk about them.

Blades are not dead. :)

Blades will never die simply because they provide superior performance to the alternatives in so many ways. As long as there are golfers that want the best performance from their irons, there will always be a demand for them.

Long live the Blade users thread as a testament to this. Onward to 1,000 pages!
