Blade users thread (NO DEBATING CLUBHEADS! NO Buy Sell Trade!)

I'm considering having my Apex MB's bent 1 deg stronger. Anyone have any feedback that have done that, good or bad? This is my first set of blades and I find that I really have to step on them to get to my distances sometimes. Love everything else about them though. Stock lofts are very neutral on these guys:

I have FG-51's bent to near modern lofts....people look at me like WTF when I pull the same iron as their SGI.

Β

Any drawback at all to changing the lofts for you or all positives?

Less bounce, more offset, but only by a degree if that's your plan....

Curious if anyone has put Steelfiber shafts or other graphite shafts in their blades? Is that just sacrilege?? I'm very happy with my PX 6.5 with the Apex MB's but you never know down the line....

I am of the thought it is never sacrilege to get a set where you can play them---- After all you are talking to a man who has built and games 2 sets of Macgregor blades with Hogan Apex shafts.

Β

The old MacHogans!

Darn Skippy you got that!!! LOL to rub salt in a wound so to speak I have a set of Muirfields with #3 shafts with Hogan SNs on the ferrules. I find that amusing even though I am sorta a Hogan man too

Β

Oh, the sacrilege!!!! Old Ben is rolling over in his grave right now! I wouldn’t be surprised if you were struck by lightning while playing those bastards! LOL.

One degree won't affect how they play much. You might not even notice it. One degree less bounce, and probably an ever so slightly more closed look at address. I tend to bend my clubs weaker, and if it's a couple of degrees or more, I notice that they appear more open at address. One degree, not so much.

I really don't notice any perceptible difference on the course given so many lie variables.

If we are getting down to the nitty gritty, they are Kyoei KCM open moulds. You can get them in their infancy for $350. But, boy, you got a lot of grinding and finish to do to get them to their finished result.

Β

But, thank you Nard. We hadn't seen any golf porn in awhile. Thank you for throwing it up.

Yeah, no. Their nickel plate Kyoei's.

Β

Don't get all crazy...it's golf porn...but the design is MP-9. Not a dig because the MP9's IMO where the best Mizzy blade.

Β

That's like saying TN87, was THEIR great design never mind Hogan did it in the 1950's, lol.

Β

EDIT: I'm just busting stones, I think highly Mizuno but originality of design was not their strongest suit in the day. The new 900 T is a beauty to me though, if i was to go 'rational' , I would buy those.

I saw that and was actually thinking of you and this thread. Also 'wow that might fun, grind off 25 grams get my Don White on and such'. Then I'm like 'geez the plate is $50 a head minimum if I go nickel', which is real big with me, so now I'm like screw that, I'll just pay to have it done right,l ol.

Β

EDIT: Really like the idea of blanks and doing self grinds, I have definitive ideas on what I like in the muscle so I wish the canvas was bigger there on the KCM's.

The best thing I did for my game was to stop looking at this thread;). I finally committed to one set for 18 months now and I love it! My Srixon z965 irons are just awesome

Β

But I’d be lying if I didn’t still peak in here for the blade pics.

Β

Speaking of blades, I am finally striking the ball better and hit a few non blades just messing around and man, I never want to see one of those near me let alone have to hit them. There is nothing like that pure struck blade feeling and the confidence and performance I get with my Srixons is just unreal. Shockingly I only have S300 shafts in them but it’s a perfect combo.

Β

Quick little deviation (it’s been a while since I posted in here), I finally started hitting with my left arm leading and dominating the swing instead of my right (been about 2 weeks doing this). Yesterday I played a course with a 134 slope and shot an 81 which with my cap at 3.9 isn’t a great score but... I hit 12/14 fairways (used my 4 iron a few times and was flushing it) and hit 10/18 greens (including missing two from inside of 50 yards). Putting killed me with 37 putts and only 1 birdie (had decent proximity to the hole but kept two putting and even 3 putted twice from within 20 feet. I should keep building on this and hope to comeback with a nice scoring update next few weeks.

Β

Moral of the story, play blades and they might make golf more enjoyable :).

Β

And if you have played the Srixon z965 I highly encourage it!

I've been working with this to good effect. It's easy to get too right sided in pursuit of "shallow" and such. Left side on downswing is fertile ground for me due to neglect.

Β

Agree on committing to one set or setup and bonding with it.

Big fan of Redlines and really would like to try the Ft Worth's that came after them. Own 2 sets of 99 Apex that took cues from the 88's and others. Hogan was a pretty prolific designer. Guy knew his stuff.

Β

Nard, the best deal in golf is the new Ft. Worth's for $700...steel or graphite. I hit the initial Ft. Worth's and they were great, but I wasn't planning on buying new clubs at that time. My friend got them for demo online. It was funny because on the range other folks were curious about the Hogan's....but as soon as they didn't see a giant cavity in the back they ran away like they were about to be consumed by evil golf Gods.

I gotta say, $50/head for nickel is disgusting. I mean, nickel is the most basic plating on the planet. It can be done electrolessly now. For $50/head I can get you DLC coating. And nickel will scuff and scratch. When it scratches, you have to disassemble and replate entirely.

Β

But yeah, I considered making my first purchase with tourspec with those blanks. I just don't know if I feel like doing that much grinding. It would be pretty cool to take a poke at a set of them though :).

KC, I like the idea of nickel (also love copper) but probably not as practical as chrome or black hard coat though I'm more a chrome/satin person anyway. The heads would have to be really special for me to go nuts on exotic finish.

Β

4T, was thinking of the 92 Ft Worth's, some call them Redline too but that's a misnomer. They have a boxier and beefier muscle than the 88's. The new FT Worth 15 is a nice club, came close to buying a set. My Maruman's happen to have the same V-sole design, I'm also sitting on spare heads of those that are 9/10 in condition. Those are getting the business, I have plans for those :)

Thanks guys. This set was tough. Had a lot more sole damage that the chrome hid. You'd be surprised how many imperfections your chrome plate hides. Especially when they "mush Buff" the under plate. Didn't realize just how much turf they had chewed through until I got the chrome off. Tiny tiny pits.

Β

The finish is a cold blue. Durable? Not overly so. They're still considered raw with mild protection. What I love about blue; if the finish wears or scratches, you just wipe it on, let it sit for a minute then follow it lightly with a 0000 steel wool for 2-3 passes. Doesn't effect your paint fill. They require (in my opinion) the same amount of care your typical golf iron should receive anyhow or a tool you're trying to prevent weathering on

Β

Faces turned out great. 7i and 3i

I've been looking around; really love the shape of the Bridgestone Jumbo MTN III irons, everything except their wedges. What the hell happened here? The only person I know on here who has owned this set (or still does) is C_T_S. Are the wedges really this bad looking framed up to a ball?

Unfortunately, yes they are. I played a unique combo set years ago- J's professional weapon cb 3,4,5: MTN III blades 6-9, Founders Club 200 series pw: and Maxfli Tad Moore forged 53,57,61.

Know was kind of a random aside- point being, Mr. Moore has always been able to create wedges that blend well with Asian market forgings, without the funky progressive reverse offset.

The wedges in that set are particularly warped. Which is a shame, because the other irons are absolutely beautiful. Made at the height of the bubble, when two and three thousand dollar sets of irons were very common. As for progressive offset, I don't find it offensive as long as it isn't very pronounced. It just takes a little getting used to.
