Blade users thread (NO DEBATING CLUBHEADS! NO Buy Sell Trade!)

Teed off this morning. 57°F, nobody on the course. Why nobody on the course? 40-50mph winds. Terrible. Didn't even keep score. I was 180 yards out into head window, pulled a 5w to make it on the green. Still landed short on the green. Couldn't get my blades to go anywhere. What a hoot though :D. Happy new year.

I played, too, but started at around 11 - didn't get windy here until about 12, then it really blew.

Birdied my first hole of 2019. Shoulda retired right then. "Under par for all of 2019."

Anybody have to switch balls due to tons of spin from their blades? Coming from P790's I'm not used to this level of spin, especially in my long irons. It's nice because I've got full confidence I can hold just about any green, even from like 190 yards... But I'm losing some distance for sure. Thinking maybe I need to switch to like TP5X or even AVX to cut a bit of this spin off. Still need all my lofts checked just in case they are playing really weak...But I think it's just me not used to this kind of 'tour' flight.

Oh man. I went off at 6:50AM, around hole 4, I had wondered if you were also out. Chino Hills was about as the windiest day of Wyoming. I hit a 5i off an elevated tee, I got under it a bit, the headwind pushed it back. It went a total of 110 yards. Had some drives go 310+, other drives went 200 :D. Absolute malarchy

From my understanding (and i’m a bit of an idiot) your spin numbers are most likely more of a factor from the shaft. Blades do spin more on average but how much, I have no clue. Even if using the same shafts the combination could be your result. Just because 1 shaft works with a certain head doesn’t mean that will be universal.

Went to a range for my first hit of the year today. I hadn't hit a ball in two weeks, which is a long time for me.

First, a nagging muscle problem seems to have gone away during the rest period.

I was swinging well today. I have been working on my setup, setting up with my hands further away from my body (they had crept in really close). It gives me more room and lets me just make a more natural swing. The results were good. I was not thinking of playing during January and February, but I might just have to go now. Today was cold (about 8~9*C), but not that cold.

So this is happening. First pitches and putts in a few months.

Is that going to be grass or turf?

Grass - Bermuda green, Kolai fairway... I've been hesitant to walk on it, but I went out and hit a few pitches yesterday. Plays pretty firm.

What type of mower/mowers did you get? You planning a light top dress program? ?

Send me a PM if you have any questions. Where are you located?

Played New Years Day. Frost delay until 1130a but got to play with my recently acquired MP-68s with PX5.5 shafts. The head/shaft combo is superb!

Temps never got above 40* but the sun was out so it wasn’t too bad. Played a skins game so didn’t keep score. Lost the front but won the back.

The “ice grass” growing on the water jug stand was interesting to see.

For me, shaft is more of a means of getting my face to marry up properly with my club path in order to make shots hit target. I don't focus on or fit for spin/launch, etc. With the wrong "Feeling" shaft, I spray the ball all over the place. When I was fit in Novemeber, it was incredibly clear how much better I hit any head with modus 120X compared to every other offering I was given. That includes X100 which seems to kind of be the gold standard still.

After checking my numbers vs PGA tour average (because my swing speed and the lofts I use are typical for tour averages) my spin isn't actually outrageously high. It's a little high, but probably within a standard deviation. I'm now using TP5X which is a fairly low spinning tour ball. Have yet to get on Trackman with it but I suspect it will take off 200 or even 300 RPM. I was using my old Chrome Soft X's at first which is probably the 2nd highest spinning tour ball, right behind Kirklands.

Got a set of Hogan Apexes for Christmas to try. Apex 4 shaft. I'm 99% certain these are the '72 model, not the more lauded '73 model (or Redlines, or '99 model...)

The neck in the 6i and 7i is a little clunky, but otherwise they look good at setup. I especially like the rounded shape on the shorter irons, as they remind me of my Titleist Tour Models, though I'm usually a sucker for square toes.

Those are reasonably attractive, Catchy. ;)

When I was shopping my first set of blades, it came down to Apex and the Golden Rams I wound up with. If the Hogans had other than Apex 3 shafts, I might be a Hogan guy now instead of Ram. LOL

Quick survey for the blade hos: so I am walking through a nearby golf shop the other day that I haven’t been to before because it’s in a random run down strip mall, and I stumble upon a treasure trove of vintage club sets. Hogans, some Wilson’s, a bunch of 90s game improvement stuff, and then BAM...two sets of original nike forged blades, one in stiff and one in regular, heads in PLASTIC.

Now despite my swing I am mildly obsessed with blades, and I have had an eBay alert set on these bad boys for two years keeping an eye out for a well kept set. I am playing mp4s and love them but am ready to try out the mp18s for upcoming season. So...now for the survey...what do you do?

A) forget the new blades, get the Nikes and just figure out the lofts later. Match them with a nike carry bag from eBay and basically have the American-equivalent of the wrxr bag full of Japanese forgings that no one has heard of and regale your foursome with talk about how you’ve never felt anything so SOFT, never mind the 11 handicap

B) forget the Nike’s - great find but lofts are wacky, grooves are non-conforming (technically in 2024?), and MP18s are going to eventually be just as legendary. Stay in the now.

C) Buy them, keep them as a keepsake, hit them at home for fun, etc. Play the MP4s another season, they’re great and wait for the MP20s in October. Maybe even the P7TWs when they drop...

D) Buy both sets and BST one or both because WRX is full of blade hos that can’t resist. Take profits and buy a TX shaft because you know my 105SS needs that low-low treatment...

Been a while since i posted here, but have been gaming the mp-5s so didnt feel like i was a certified blade user thread contributor. Welp, today gamed the tour stage x blade and had my best round since ive moved to california. The edge on these is like my old hogans and after a mishit on a soggy first hole, i settled down, started to club up and swing easy and from hole 4 till 12 went straight par and finished 4 over for the day. Big props to the mizuno jpx 900 3 wood as well...used it out of the box on almost every driving hole but 2. Used my wilson blade putter as well. Good to be back

Edit: how bout them new prototyoe wilson blades....lovely

Oh...and...GO BEARS!

Choose A - but on the course, STFU about it :)

If you choose D - no gouging. Assuming they are really cheap, add $50 onto the set for your troubles and then give this thread a heads up before you list on the BST.

Option d. They are to good to pass up.
