SNELL GOLF BALLS??? anyone???

Weird it seemed like when they were first released the Red was the favorite here. Now the Black is the holy grail!

I'll toss a theory out there.

The MTB Red got all the attention initially because a) Dean said the MTB Black was pretty similar to the original MTB and b) the MTB Red was available in yellow, which seemed like a really big deal based on discussion I saw online.

So that's the one everybody tried first. A certain percentage of people absolutely loved it, as tends to happen when lots of people try a new product.

Now that the Black/Red versions have been out a while it's falling into what Dean probably expected all along. Some people really love the MTB Black (and would not use the MTB Red instead) while others really love the MTB Red (and are not interested in MTB Black).

The MTB Black and Red really do seem more different from each other than, for instance, the current ProV1 vs. ProV1x or TP5 vs. TP5X.

P.S. And I really do need to cut back on my use of the word "really".

What's the difference between the Red and the Black? and why isn't it prominently featured on the website? I'm looking for more a PROV1X.

Thanks.

If you just read Dean's comment throughout this thread he has addressed that many times.

The MTB Red should be similar to the MTB black off the driver and in the short game. Differences are mostly in full swing irons and wedges where the MTB Red should spin a good bit more.

The MTB Black will feel softer (or at least it has lower compression) and you may find it has a very slightly lower spin off the driver and/or slightly lower trajectory overall. But those are minor differences. The big thing is iron and full wedge spin, the whole purpose of the Red was to offer more spin on those shots.

Thanks! Not to be snarky, but I didn't read through a 124 page thread hoping the owner of the company would be clarifying the difference... I expect that information to be prominently featured on the website.

It's actually listed on the blog once I dug down into it... I just expect such information to be quickly and easily available as a consumer. I'll probably start with a box of the black and see what happens.

I believe he's also said the Black will have a slightly lower trajectory. I'm not sure if that's purely a function of spin, or of the aerodynamics of the ball.

It's there, in the product info for the Red:

Introducing MTB RED:

  • 4-piece construction with 338 dimple pattern
  • Urethane cover providing short game control, excellent feel and durability
  • NEW inner mantle layer increasing spin on short irons for approach shots
  • Our Dual-Feel Technology, providing a bit firmer feel on longer shots while continuing MTB's soft feel on short shots.

In terms of the question about "looking for more a ProV1x" that would put you squarely in the MTB Red target market.

Like the ProV1x it has the higher iron spin, higher driver trajectory and (slightly) firmer feel.

I'm interested in trying the MTB Black for a couple more rounds, myself. Judging from one round's personal experience so far, Dean's comments about the MTB Black vs. original MTB and along with what little bit of launch monitor data I can dredge up online I'm thinking it's not really a simple case of MTB Black being a "ProV1 type ball" and MTB Red being a "ProV1x type ball".

The MTB Black is probably lower spin than ProV1. I don't think it as low iron spin or low driver trajectory as AVX but it may be somewhat in that direction. In my initial round of trying the MTB Black it seemed to have a pretty flat driver flight and the trajectory with my short irons and wedges reminded me very much of AVX. But that's just 18 holes on one day...

Yeah, the information is definitely there once you dig down... if I ran the website, the front image would say underneath the MTB Black: Lower Launch and Spin on Tee and under MTB Black: Softer off tee and Higher Spin on Approach shots.

That said, I do not run a successful golf ball company. I just found it odd the differences are not more prominently featured.

Thanks! I'm actually looking for lower spin and launch, so I'll probably give the black a go first... I'm getting back into golf, so need to figure this whole thing out... I still have some cases of TP3s lying around to waste as I learn to control my duck hook!

Might want to check your typing there before applying for a gig writing Dean's web site copy ;-)

Picked up a dozen red at Big5 for $22 after coupon. Gonna give them a go a couple times over the next few days.

Srixon 585 5-AW - Modus 105 Stiff
Ping Glide 2.0 Stealth 53 & 58 Degree

If anyone would like some new reds (only have sharpie marks) shoot me a PM. They are the white ones. I’ve played both blacks and reds but with my new AP2s think the blacks are best for me. Think I’ve still got around 15 reds. Good way to try the reds at some savings.

My local big 5 is all the way across town from me and I’ve been three times to check to see if they had the blacks. Reds only lol. I’ve given up hope.

Wish I could just buy a sleeve or two instead of buying a whole dozen.

I have never used Snell; however, I have used Vice and I really liked them. Are Snell and Vice similar in price and performance?

I think Snell are actually cheaper when you consider they ship free to the lower 48 and to get Vice at the cheapest price ($25/dz) you have to order 5 dozen but pay shipping. I’ve played the Vice Pro+ and really liked it but from most accounts the Snell is a better and more durable.

Vokey SM9 50F/54S/58M, DG Black Onyx x100

I think Vice has more models to choose from and colors when they are available. Performance it comes down to preference but either way you will be getting a great value vs retail name brands.

So only got 4 holes in before my back seized up so do not have a great review of the red just yet but from what I saw after 4 drives was that it was good distance wise , not long but not short. Launch wasn’t as high as I was expecting but could have been my swing .

I did push one quite a bit and I think on mis hits this ball may be exposed more but I guess that’s the trade for more green side spin.

Didn’t get much chance for chips and pitches except for 1 hole and liked what I saw , pitching uphill to a short side pin with plenty of spin.

Putting the ball felt a little firm but not in a bad way.

Too short of test but so far I like this ball. Would love to try them in firm conditions once the back is healthy again.

Dean, have your office delivered MTB Black to Big 5 in CA? FYI, they don't have your balls on BIg 5 website. They used to have og MTB but pulled out.
