Bah. When I looked at the weekend forecast this past Monday it looked like we'd catch a break both Saturday and Sunday. However, now it looks like Saturday is going to be a solid no-go, with morning temps in the low 20's, and afternoon highs in the low 40's. With winds in the mid teens, it's going to be chilly. Sunday looks a little better.

... "Soft?" I have been in Phoenix playing 13 days in a row with upper 70's and low 80's everyday and was scheduled to play at 2:30pm today at Ocotillo, but with 20 mph winds and 69* predicted I canceled my round. Now THAT is soft.

We start our event season on Saturday. Temps in the 40's with sunshine and low level winds is very comfortable. I'm more concerned about nesting geese and how they seem to attack "certain" members of our group.

Played St. Andrew's yesterday. Very comfortable with the sunshine and minimal wind. Got around in just over 3 hours. The course is in spring conditions and needs a bit of cleanup. They've taken more trees down. Missed a double eagle on 8 by a couple of inches.

Don't get me started on frigging geese... They're the worst!

And sorry to hear you came so close to joining the double eagle club.

I'm still hole-in-one-less though. Looking to change that starting Sunday at Ravisloe.

I've got a perfect solution to this: hiding some ripe fish in my playing partner's ClicGear. I'll let you know how it turns out.

It's the maiden voyage of his Clic Gear and wasn't he the only one that didn't experience the Geese Factor last go round? Think you're on to something.

Lol. I think I have a little bit more drive in the fall than in the spring. Course conditions are much better late in the year, so I can deal with temps in the high 30's as long as the winds are moderate. Given that I play primarily in the early morning, I'll take a pass on the mid 30's.

It also doesn't help that I've played 12 rounds this season, and have 6 rounds booked in Alabama in two weeks.

it's chilly.

no play to report, but we did a family errand that took us to zion, which warranted a quick drive-by at shepherd's crook.

I hadn't driven russell rd (state line) where the 13th green and 14th tee (brute - long par 5) are.

I've always struggled on the the 13th, so it was good to have a long look at the green and approach.

To the north, is Big Oaks(?) and I saw a cart and some guys playing (I think)

That's all I got...

13, the Farm ? fun hole to play, we have heard horses whinnying on that one. have joked about it for years.

if you heard music from the group at Big Oaks, it might have been Dean, Greg and Ralph.

we know them from Shepherd's and they play in any weather.

The last round of 2017 was with them at Midlane - it was 27 degrees early that morning.

43 degrees tomorrow and 52 and sunny on Sunday. Booked for Prairie Landing. A nice easy walk, though nothing will beat the comedy of last year, when it was walking only and Prairie Landing regulars were lugging giant cart bags around.

I see there's debate about the future of Lake Bluff golf club. I always enjoyed that course. Really like playing it. Prices always seem to be a bit higher than they should be. ab0bafabf68d0c2ec16ed4e15b58dc55.jpg

The problem with Lake Bluff is that it just floods out too much. They do a nice job keeping that course in good shape, but it becomes a money pit if you're dealing with flood damage all the time. Also, their clubhouse is old and underwhelming. Limited revenue opportunities.

There are some rallying around rebuilding it as a 9 holer with a expanded practice facility. Not sure they could address the flooding and change things up. It would be great to see that happen.

That's a little more like it. I teed it up at Sportsman's CC this morning. It was a little cool at the 1st tee, but it warmed up quickly. I was down to a long sleeve polo and a vest by the end of the round. 'Nice. The course was in "meh" shape. The fairways were dry, but very spongy. The greens were in fairly poor shape. They were shaggy, bumpy, and had large aeration holes. It was pretty much impossible to keep a puttt online. That said, I wasn't expecting much better. Ravisloe's greens were in much better shape 2 weeks ago.

OK round ballstriking. I was missing a lot of shots right. I had a good run on the back nine, birding 14, 15, and 16, but otherwise it was forgettable. The best shot of the day was my approach on 15. After a poor drive, I had 215 to a back pin. I hit a solid 5 wood that landed short of the green, and rolled up to 3 feet.

Interesting that the greens had aeration holes. We had an incredibly hot and dry September, so maybe they aerated in October and the holes didn't fill back in before winter. I hope this isn't a problem at a lot of other courses.

Probably waited too late in the season to do it, and they never got a chance to heal. They may have to alter their schedule for this spring as well.. Massive mistake, maybe they had a big tournaments in the fall that they had to wait for, but either way, shouldn't happen.

Bear and I played Glencoe yesterday and Prairie Landing today. Considering that yesterday was the first day Glencoe was open this season, it was in very good shape. They had the tees playing at max length, which I have honestly never seen there before. I wasn’t hitting my driver well but had a solid back nine en route to a 77.

Prairie Landing was very good tee to green but the greens were awful. They still haven’t healed from last fall’s punches and also haven’t been rolled. They froze over night so we had a 45 minute frost delay to deal with. It was walking only so that kept the pace consistent. I love the layout there but it’s not an easy place to score at early in the season. 78.

Walking Oak Grove in the morning!

The course was open, but in bare bones shape.

Front nine still had the aeration holes and rolled at about a 2 stimp. You had to aim ten feet past the hole and it still was short.

A lot of extra putts and a couple poor iron shots led to a +13 front. I'll have to remember to bring my heavy putter next time I play to handle the shaggy slow greens.

My game picked up at the turn. Had two birds (11 and 18) to finish with a +3 back.

Did I mention I birdied 11 ???

I had my vest off by the third hole and was actually sweating a bit in my Under Armor thermal shirt under the polo.

All in all, a great morning.

Indifferent start to the season at George Dunne today. More birdies than pars and lots of others. Very heavy underfoot with most drives plugging in the fairways. Bunkers were mud and greens were gray.
