Where are you playing tomorrow - Chicago (Round2)

just wondering, what would you guys rate as the most difficult course in chicagoland?

also anyone want to join me for a round at kemper lakes?

I think Bull Valley is the toughest I've seen. Chutes off the tees, lots of trees, rough and a few blind shots. Gotta keep it straight.

I love Kemper. I used to caddie there. Haven't been out there since they redid the bunkers, although I hear it's great!

Bull Valley is a meager 77.2/151. Basically a pitch and putt.

Kidding...have been trying to get on there for 20 years!

Cdga has some nice tee times at Chicagoland private clubs, bull valley being one

What do you mean by this? Is this an auction? (excuse my ignorance, if this is common knowledge)

cdga has tee times for cdga members at certain private clubs this summer for select dates and times.

Not an auction, but a number of tee times that one can sign up for (not sure if one needs a foursome or not).

Info is on the cdga website

If you want the full tip of the horns experience, play when it’s cold and a twenty mph wind from the west. It will feel like 8,000 yards.

Played there two weeks ago in mild but hot conditions, birdied 18th for a 5 over 77. There are some holes I just don’t know how to play from tee to green.

Not sure it's better...the conditions at Mistwood are really good right now.

Fair enough. I like the layout of Prairie Landing much better. Not a fan of Mistwood generally. Not that they had much choice with the sliver of land on the west but anyway.

I think Medinah #3 from the tips is the toughest and I have played all the privates in Chicago. Butler would be #2 as it isn't quite as tight as Medinah, which could use some more tree removal.

Olympia Fields has 2 solid tough courses because of the trees primarily and a few tough green complexes.

North - 7343 yards and 76.6 / 150

South - 7106 yards and 75.0 / 146

I'd like to get out to Butler again as it has been 15 years to see it now.

Chalet Hills and Prairie Isle tomorrow. I've never played Prairie Isle before so hopefully I like it enough to add it to my rotation, because the waking rate is pretty decent.

Chalet Hills is very underrated. Worst “driving range” I’ve seen though.

If I want to hit balls, I can just use Foxford Hills' range down the street. Not ideal but better than hitting egged out balatas. With 36 tomorrow I'm gonna pass on any range sessions though.

Prairie Isle is a decent layout, but it's quite a trek, and I'm not sure if it warrants a regular visit.

Midlothian is a very traditional, old school tree lined course. For the most part, what you see is what you get. The defense of the course is the greens and if I recall, quite a few are 3 tiers so you need to be on the right tier to have a chance. It does have a couple of funky fairways that abruptly end and one has a bunker unusually placed at the end of the fairway. Fairly heavily bunkered. Easy to walk course and they have caddies which is something I enjoy. Don't think you'll be disappointed at all.

Playing Midlothian CC on Sunday. Anyone have experience there?

Played it a few years ago. Great classic course. Usually a fairway bunker or two per hole, greens were very nice, smooth and true. Overall the course was in excellent condition when I played it, as to be expected. I wasn't necessarily blown away by it like I was with Flossmoor, but it was incredibly nice in a classic and simple way.

Pretty solid rounds at Chalet Hills and Prairie Isle today. I was the first one out at CH and got around in three hours. It would've been quicker but a threesome tried to sneak off the back and I had to wait on them on 10 and 11 before they let me play through. I had four bogies and two birdies (3 and 8) for a 75. It was in great shape as always and the fairways were rolling out plenty. The greens had a lot of unrepaired ball marks but that's a fairly easy fix.

Prairie Isle is an interesting course. The front isn't very difficult and offers lots of birdie opportunities to open up, but the two long 4's are a nice challenge. The back is a lot prettier and has more elevation change. There's some sharp dog legs that make positioning important. I likely won't go out of my way to play it but I'll pair it up with Chalet or Foxford in the future. I shot another 75. Despite lots of birdie chances, I only cashed one in.

Midlo hosted the 1914 US Open. Won by Walter Hagen who collected a cool $300.

Have played PI a few times and enjoyed it. As you stated, a very interesting course. How were the conditions?

Conditions were good. All green and no fungus. Greens were smooth and running at a pretty consistent 8. Not fast but also not too slow. Pace was a little over 4 hours and, since I teed off at about 9:30, I'll take that. If it wasn't so far away I'd probably play it more (the weekend cart policy hurts, though I understand given the elevation change). I liked the use of water hazards in all the par threes and 12-16 are a nice stretch of holes.

As I call it, the home of the 400 +/- yard par 4. A friend is a member there, so I get to play it relatively often, The conditions should be solid, the greens are usually quick and true. If possible, stay below the pin (duh). Can’t say it’s overly difficult - there are some gettable holes - but it’ll keep you honest.

Btw, the food is excellent!

Old oak this atternoon. Hot, hot hot is what I mostly remember.... and about 8 312s and some shots of polish finest caramel flavored home made vodka. The course was nice tee to green, but the greens were Cog Hill -like slow. Got to use my new Wilson wedges.... vast improvement over my old Cleveland’s... Distance control still needs some work, but the added green side spin is quite noticeable. Tough to beat 2 for ~z$100.

What's the weekend cart policy? We usually play around 10 and have walked. Don't remember getting grief over that. Is it a new policy?

On weekends and holidays they now require a cart for all rounds before 12:00.

We've had that at Red Tail before. Not a fan of the assumption of being slow.
