Where are you playing tomorrow - Chicago (Round2)

... We keep bringing up the worst of the worst in comparison to Tanna. If it is a perfect day with no wind and mid 80's temps I might be tempted to play Big Run for free but would not waste $1 to play there. If I could design a golf course it would have 2 stellar pars 3's and 6 par 5's. I was playing almost everyday when I was in LA for pilot season playing between auditions back in the late 90's and bemoaning how par 3's derailed so many of my rounds. I could not understand why I played 4/5's so well and sucked at par 3's. Then I saw a stat for Tiger that was something like on par 5's for his career he was 1,232 UNDER par. But on par 3's he was 39 OVER par. I felt a lot better. But would still avoid the 6 par 3's at Tanna although I appreciate the extra 2 par 5's. The 16th hole at 215 into the wind and a blind tee shot over the reeds is one of the silliest holes I have ever played.

I've never made worse than a birdie on the 16th there.

... Then you should close your eyes when hitting on every par 3 you play. :blind:

... I played Naperbrook Tuesday and Wednesday and could not believe how many ball marks were on the green. It was like fall golfers were just trucking thru the course and ignoring their ball marks. Normally I repair mine and a few others but there were like 50 a green so unless I saw a newer deep one I just repaired mine and moved to the next hole. A shame because the greens are rolling pretty nice for Naperbrook other than the ball marks.

I feel like anytime BR is talked about on here I am the extreme minority in hating that place. Nice to hear someone agrees. Is tanna 6-6-6? I can't remember. Those are pretty rare, one of the Cabot courses is 6-6-6 I believe.

No, it's got 6 par 3s, 7 par 4s and 5 par 5s. It's only a par 71, though it's a par 34 on the front and a 37 on the back. Personally, I don't like courses where the front and back are basically two different courses, but that's definitely the case at Tanna. The front is under 2900 yards but the back is over 3600 yards.

I imagine so, yes

Just throwing out that observation from the posted touting

You develop the best touting you can with land you have, and if the 9’s are different, so be it

In the case of the buck club, I know there is a option of the property that is flat is an existing course, then the new hikes will in the adjacent “foothills.”

Just thought it was an interesting example of dramatically different 9’s and a timely observation as well, if not a bit out of place in this thread

Who would have fathomed that there would be so much love for Tanna Farms? Next thing you know, VNutz will chime in and say he's secretly always loved the course.

What’s not to love about a course that has no driving range, a tiny practice putting green, begins on a par 3 over water, and has two long par 5s that have rough bisecting the middle of the fairway at 280-300 yards that I always find?

I actually play Tanna Farms all the time. Not a bad place.

In defense of the first hole, that green complex is HUGE.

The more ZB says about the Buck Club the more I think it is going to be a joke. It was supposed to be a cool minimalist club (think black sheep here) for good players to have national membership. Now it basically sounds like the hipster version of golf. Every hole has some extra feature or can be played some different way. Less is more sometimes. Course snobs like ZB and Andy from the fried egg have become super annoying.

Off topic from Chicago courses, but has anyone played at Puerto Los Cabos in Mexico before? Heading there in a week, and I think that’s the course I would like to play, just wondering if any of you guys have played there.

Also, might try to play Oak Grove tomorrow, thought I remember reading good things about that course in this thread before

Speaking of bad courses - I’m sure people remember Naperhell’s finest - Country Lakes. Got to play it only once (over 10 years ago,, when I was starting to play this silly game). Boy, oh boy - what an experience. Could barely find the ball in the fairway (if you call it that).

CL was famous for a memorable event held there where people didn't care how long the round took or how terrible the conditions were.

I played it probably a dozen or so times, have great memories of that course from 20+ years ago, before it went to crap. We rolled up to it for a high school match, and it was double booked with a Make A Wish outing featuring lots of female talent, was a great day for a bunch of high schoolers. :) If it were still there I'd definitely go back and play it just for a refresher.

I may have mentioned this before but the one time I played Tanna Farms, I was kindly asked by the pro as we were about to tee off to stop taking so many practice swings as I may take a divot. Okay fine. Lo and behold I was about to tee up to start the round on the actual practice putting green. Thought it was slightly sloped but anyway.

The ground at Country Lakes was so hard, it made the course play considerably shorter. I remember the 1st hole (Par 5) playing like a par 4 because your ball kept bouncing and bouncing and bouncing. The worst part is that the course was walking distance from my friend's house so I was forced to play there too many times. A true example of a golf course that was not cared for as a golf course.

Lol. I had a dream last night that I was on a putting green repairing ball marks. The weird part was not that the ball marks were oozing blood. No, the weird part was that I seemed to run out of them.

Why can't I have a dream where I shoot 62 to win the U.S. Open? I guess dreams have to have some basis to reality.

My worst recurring dream I am teeing off at Augusta or some such and my hand is a bit sweaty and I can't get my golf glove on for 10+ minutes of struggling. Never get to tee off. It is a truly awful dream

Cold day at the Highlands of Elgin. Ever since I lived in Atlanta for 7 years I can’t stand the cold. Course was pretty firm. I hit the ball pretty far, but I almost drove the green from the gold tees on 1. Somehow I drove the ball 340. I was playing pretty well - maybe 1-2 over par through 11, but there were 4 groups slowing me down in front of me. I left after 12 holes. Might be my last round of the year.

I had a much-improved 2018. I really atrengthened my wedge game. I found a tip from Michael Breed where he said to turn not just your front shoulder behind the ball, but my back to the target. I gained a few MPH of ballspeed due to that tip. I also found out that I positioned the ball way too far back in my stance when putting and didn’t have enough shoulder tilt. Looking forward to 2019.

A very pleasant morning at Deerpath. With light winds and a bit of sunshine, it was near perfect fall golf. Walking 18 in a foursome in 3:30 was a nice bonus. The fairways were in nice shape, and the leaves weren't an issue for the most part. Unfortunately the greens had been aerated a week or so ago, and were quite bumpy and sandy. Bunkers were wet and quite thin.

I had a great front nine, finishing with 1 birdie and two bogies. Started leaking oil on the back, and finished 5 over. Definitely need to spend some time this winter trying to straighten out the driver. Big draws don't work on tree lined courses.

I'm going to play it by ear tomorrow. If the radar looks OK in the early morning I'll try to get out somewhere.

started the day at TPC Northbrook. range early, first tee time, calm, dry and moderately clear skies.

swapped a different three wood into the bag and made some good moves up the middle with the choice.

rolled my second to fifteen green with it that I'd bet was longer than my drive.

greens were slower than last week but did roll fairly true.

breakfast out after and smiles all around.

hope everyone got out today and had a great time.

Bear and I played Prairie Isle and Blackstone today. I did the more pedestrian 36 hole walk but Bear man-styled it with 36 today and 36 yesterday. The weather was excellent at PI and so was the conditioning. It’s a pain to get to Prairie Grove from the city but it was worth it. The greens were firm, smooth and largely mark-free and tee to green it was equally well-maintained. If they punched this Fall, it certainly didn’t show. I had a birdie-free round but struck the ball really well for a 75.

Blackstone was so-so. The fairways and rough were the same as always but the greens, while quick, hadn’t been rolled in a while and large portions were looking kind of chewed. The pace was pretty brutal, at 4:40 because there was a foursome of guys in denim holding everyone else up. The trend that everyone except the two of us were following was to wait until the green cleared and go at every par 5 in two. I wasn’t a math major but if someone’s drive goes 240, odds are their second shot won’t go 270. We both birdied 7 and I finished with a 76.

Bah, I really dislike weathermen. I got up before sunrise to check the weather, and there was rain stretching from Wisconsin down past Kankakee, and the hourly forecast had rain predicted all morning. 'Went back to bed for a few hours, and woke up to patches of blue sky. Pffft. Oh well, I guess a day off isn't going to kill me, but not playing for the first time on a Sunday since mid-July does feel odd.

Played Randall Oaks yesterday. Possibly the fastest greens we've played all year. Quite a few pins in silly places as well. If you were anything but below the pins it was tough to make putts. The course is pretty much leaf free but the fairways were a bit rough. Hoping this isn't the last round of the year.

I'm seeing 47 and partly sunny next Saturday. That's golf weather if you're not arthritic or on blood thinners.
