Which brings up another topic... a pet peeve of mine.  Couple of golf guys I know make more 10 - 15 footers than I do.  They always charge the cup ala never up never in.  Except when they go 4-5 feet past the hole and then rake it away and give themselves the putt.  Hell, I'd make a lot more of those putts too, if I didn't have to keep in mind the putt coming back.  Mini rant.

We do 18" or less, for worse than par.  Par or better you finish it.

Amen. Unless I say it’s good, it ain’t good. I don’t “forget” to say it, either.

Not a gimme guy but that seems reasonable.  Giving yourself a gimme is BS unless it's sitting on the edge of the cup.   Or maybe not.  Depends on the situation.

One guy will finish everything, one will take 3 feet if it was his choice, me, I brush in shorties except on par or bird, then make it formal. It's our group compromise.

The old geezer league I'm in requires that you putt everything out.  Probably the best idea.  I know I can miss anything.

I agree. But for a 1' for bogey? I find I'm better at that range with 1 hand tap anyway. And yeah I missed a 1 footer for bird long while back but for sake's of keep it moving we allow gimme in 1.5' or better, for bogie or more.

The old geezer league I'm in is all over the place which drives me nuts. One team you play putts everything out and the next team will give you a two footer.

I adhere to the adage ol Harvey Penick had - why go to all the effort to get the ball in the hole only to not actually knock it in the hole?

There's such satisfaction from that sound. I even do it bumming around the practice green.

💯 this.

Me too. I have ticked  a few off who’ve given me 18 inch putts that I tap in anyway.  🤣

So true. In fact, I'm gonna make some of those old boys head explode and I'm going to refuse to accept gimme's in our matches.

The only time I would not hole out is in a 4 ball match if my putt was conceded because putting it might help my partners read. In that situation I cannot putt.

I’ve been playing golf since the early 1990s and have never had this happen but I have seen it as a caddie.

In stroke play I’ll often say “hey fellas when we get to the green,  make me putt everything. I really need the practice so I’m not going to take a gimmie, cool?”

You’d think I was speaking Mongolian by the reaction.

Then it never fails, hit a nice bunker shot on let’s say, hole #3 to 2’ and some knucklehead knocks it away before I’m even out of the bunker. Don’t do that man, come on!

In our league play and the small money game we putt everything out. The only exception is if someone has taken their max on handicap.

I was on the putting green last week and even there I putt everything out. Had a tourist golfer ask me why I did that. I basically told him in our games you putt everything out. I told him it also pertained to keeping an honest handicap. He just shrugged and moved on. In the shootouts you are supposed to putt everything out few do. In the groups I play in 99% of the time I do the putt outs which is good practice for me in the league and small money game

A guy I play with at least once a week is notorious for giving every player regardless of age, skill, handicap, race, height, weight  etc every 4 footer over the course of 18 holes. He is just too generous. I also believe in putting out. Its part of the game. Every time he tries to give me a putt I always say thanks but no thanks and finish the hole. Keeps my handicap honest. Plus those knee knockers matter in tournament play. Drives me nuts when he just whacks my ball back to me and tells me Im good before I can mark my ball.
