A guy I play with at least once a week is notorious for giving every player regardless of age, skill, handicap, race, height, weight  etc every 4 footer over the course of 18 holes. He is just too generous. I also believe in putting out. Its part of the game. Every time he tries to give me a putt I always say thanks but no thanks and finish the hole. Keeps my handicap honest. Plus those knee knockers matter in tournament play. Drives me nuts when he just whacks my ball back to me and tells me Im good before I can mark my ball.

He touch your ball?!

Since we are on the topic of putting (one of my favorite topics), I would love to hear everyone’s thoughts about today’s putter technology. Head size, shafts, groove and insert tech, LAB, Evnroll, broomsticks, good old fashioned 8802s, etc. Is this new age of technology what we should all be embracing or do we think it is just a current trend? Or is putting just so personal that it really is what works for each person?

I know personally I have some days where I have 28 putts and I feel like Im going to be the next Brad Faxon. Then the next day putting feels like teaching Japanese to a monkey.

Deep down I think the technology is here to stay. I always believe anything that helps is beneficial. But on the flip side I also see the idea of we are swinging a weight on the end of a stick what, 3 mph? And were just rolling the ball 20 feet that way? How card could that be, right!

Since persimmon clubs (though the TM R510 TP was pretty good!) are gone, the most satisfying sound in golf is the ball dropping into the cup. 🙂

We play in a small money game with the losses capped to avoid hard feelings.  I am notorious for being a giver.  Here is my logic.  You're a friend.  I want to win, but I want to win because I won not because you lost.  If I think the putt is a 85% make I don't want to see someone miss it (for ams a little less than 3'), but a 3' downhill slider?  Mark it and putt it.  Nor do I want to wait while the guy lines it up knowing that 85+ times out of a hundred he is going to make it.  It isn't worth it to wait for the 15% to occur.

I guess its just me.  I will say, a couple weeks before a tournament we give no quarter to get people used to knocking them in.

Great driver. That era was tremendous. My favorites were the TM R425 TP, in my bag for years. I also had a Callaway FT3 Tour that was so long it was hard to resist, but man I hit some off the planet with that damn thing.

Persimmon clubs aren’t gone, I just picked up some mint 70’s Wilsons for $15 for the three of them 😀. They played very well and I had them regripped last night. Yesterday was my first round in as long as I can remember with all clubs (except putter) from the same manufacturer.

I'm playing golf today. My partners usually give me one footers if they're flat. Today I'm just going to routinely knock them all in the hole and listen to that satisfying cup rattle.

Posting this as a public service announcement…. Cut your mechanic some slack.  This guy accurately describes why it’s hard to make a living turning wrenches anymore. He’s long winded at the beginning. Bare with it. He gets there. And why you constantly have a car that’s “ reoffending “ and has to be taken back to be worked on for the same thing again.

the real thought is this. It’s not just cars. All manner of engineering projects are like  this.  From roads and bridges to homes to even healthcare.  We don’t have access to quality anymore. Junk junk junk.  This is a societal problem.  Not just my problem 🤣

well, there are plenty of people masquerading as mechanics, too. but i get the quality thing.

i need to get brakes done again. grrr. had them done a year ago and the place screwed it up. i don’t drive much now, maybe 50 miles per month. really. and they torqued it enough to damage front two (new) rotors.

the only other thing i’ve had done was a recall for wiring to taillights. all done and i leave the dealer. i open the trunk a couple of days later and they had to run it through the spare tire well. guy took out the spare, rewired and threw the tire in the trunk. couldn’t even be bothered to put it back in the well.

parts and people suck. 🙂

Not comprehensive or exhaustive, but if I see someone using a torque wrench to tighten lug nuts, that guy gets a 👍🏼 for giving an F and doing something right, whether he’s completing brake work, rotating tires, whatever.

Seeing someone use an impact wrench to tighten lug nuts makes me 🤬

IMHO nothing correct or incorrect here. It is whatever one feels best using new or old. Me personally I am old school do not like insert putters or grooved putters

Maybe you know.  Did they make a 510TP in 10.5 loft?  I have one but I always wondered if it was bogus.  10.5 doesn't seem right for a TP.  Looks good otherwise.

Fun fact. Foxes pee on everything.  If you have tame/rescue foxes , they’ll pee in their water bowl so often.  You have to have decoy water bowls. And have the real ones hung up so they can barely reach.  A fix enclosure rivals a chicken house for ammonia smell.  And chickens stink.

For sure. People do suck. Buti honestly think the parts situation lays cover fire  for sucky people. 24 years ago when I hung my single , you had to get it right.  Or else.  Now … some folks know how bad parts are and will be patient. This gives the bad guys a cover story everytime.

I just know it’s crazy.  I basically have to bench test all new parts before install.  Just to save the time of double labor. And in reality it’s still nearly double labor.  I haven’t found the new labor rate that’s profitable.  And in 2001-2004 I was profitable at $27 a hour for general mechanics.  ( paint work was always more then) . And have the tax records to prove it. Hindsight says I was too cheap then. But I was also getting my foot in the door.

now you bump up against numbers an hour that get gasps.  And pushback verbally.  But yet they aren’t profitable.  There has to be a crashing point coming.  Both in general and in the import hardgoods market.

I bet you hear every story anyone has about a time they were wronged by a mechanic.  I get the same thing. Sc--bag cop stories.
