I have to disagree. Walked both on the same day. Royal Aberdeen is a great golf course.

I'm not sure how much dirt/sand had to be moved around but the golf course looks like it's been there for a couple of 100 years. Great job of routing it thru the dunes and valleys.

Trump is much longer(depending on the tees) but the fairways are so much bigger at trump... all depends on the wind... would much rather be a member of RA than Trump...

not all links courses are as wide open at St Andrews. As you'll see this week, Troon (especially the back 9) is fairly narrow with severe fairway bunkering and tiny greens.

If anyone is ever in Southwest Ontario, near London, there is a course called Tarandowah that was designed by the same Architect. You can play there for 60$ Canadian on the weekend. It's a great test of golf and somehow feels very links-y, despite being in the middle of Amish farm country. I highly recommend it, especially when the winds are blowing.

Over bunkered... Could remove 50% of those bunkers, make it more playable and easier on the eye. To say nothing about the cost of maintenance.

not all links courses are as wide open at St Andrews. As you'll see this week, Troon (especially the back 9) is fairly narrow with severe fairway bunkering and tiny greens.

 

Royal Troons' fairways are normally narrow true. But this week, they have made 3 cuts of rough, and widened them a touch. Play Royal Troon on a normal year, and you'd really know what narrow fairways are. The Pros have it relatively easy at Troon this week in comparison to what the Members get in a normal year.

 

Go down the road to Prestwick and play there....now that's narrow. Damn fun though!

Royal Aberdeen was extremely tight...not the longest course. Trump was long and a little wider in the fairways. If you saw the two properties, RA looks like it was jammed into the land. Trump looks like it's overflowing with expanse.
