Saw some new Callaway Woods last night (The Epic Thread)

Just got to hit both Epic models. They are SOLID.

Would you say they are significant upgrades over the GBB '15?

I liked the feel and look of the GBB15, but didn't get outstanding numbers with it. Granted...I never spent much time trying to get fit for it.

Let me say it like this. I decided to try drivers over the past two weeks without preference/bias (been a Nike guy for years). I found the M2 to be roughly three MPH faster ball speed than my Nike Vapor Fly. So I ordered one. The Epic...either model...was giving me roughly two/three MPH more than the M2. So now I'm thinking of ordering an Epic. Gonna be a fun spring of testing.

Not my post above...but it looks really nice. I didn't get to hit it. Spent too much time with the driver

It will be tough to market tech in a driver that is internal. I am hoping it lives up to its ball speed hype, I am excited to try it

This year I went GBB to Cobra King LTD to Sub Zero back to GBB. I didn't hit the Epic GBB, just the Epic SZ and found, for me( better clarify this as much as possible around here), that the Epic SZ is on par with my OG GBB in the ease of hitting the ball. I will say the set up is very solid at address and the sound and feel are very solid, more SZ or Fusion than GBB. I saw better ball speeds by a couple mph over my GBB set up when I hit about 10 balls with the Epic SZ w/stock shaft, which was a touch weak for me. Either way, it will be tested more thoroughly once we get the heads in the shop....along with the Epic SZ Fw which will be great competition with my 816 Alpha which I love!!

Great to hear! I definitively need a new driver, after another awful driving during the whole round today (cannot be my fault, isn't it?). Very interested in the Epic SZ. I loved the RAZR, and missed the original SZ, and this seems to be the perfect combination. Could you let me know what is the head size of the Epic SZ? And do you know which shafts will be offered? Thanks!

All premium shafts that are now offered with their drivers are offered (I believe 17 or 18 options). The previous SZ was tough to hit, but when you did the ball went forever. This version of the SZ is easy to hit with the launch and low spin rates that anyone with 105+ mph swing speed and consistency on the center of the face is looking for. The sound is what amazed me and just instilled confidence. Also, all heads will be 460 cc but it is well hidden and doesn't have that big head look.

in the distant and recent past i've preferred mix material heads - going back to Yonex, Callaway FT-3 all the way to the Flex. i like that both drivers i'm considering moving forward have carbon integrated in the design. along with the benefits of weighting etc. the feel and sound are different and typically more muted (anti RBZ).

Taylor Made or Callaway will be getting my money next year for certain.

Almost 100% I will pick one of these up on release depending on available no-upcharge shafts...that's despite the horrendous focus-group workshopped sounding name....Epic bro, Epic.

Epic was actually a code name during trials and R&D. Once they saw the performance numbers on the club through trials and pro demos they kept the name.

Callaway reps lose their jobs when they allow pics to be taken!! Happened with 816 Alpha DBD

i'm sure we will see pictures "accidentally" leak now that the M1 has been "accidentally" leaked. hell - the name, some of the catch words - EPIC, JAILBREAK, the number of new patents, color, etc are out for public knowledge.

let's not pretend this is our first rodeo...the pictures will surface (quicker now thanks to TM M1).

LOOKS LIKE SOMEONE LOST THEIR JOB IF THAT IS ACCURATE

This is easy. once the TM pics came out, Callaway jumped in on their own. Orders from the top to take any attention away from TM. Yeah they like to keep it under wraps but only until they need the attention. This has been going on for quite a few years. It is a standard in other businesses. "if your main competitor gets big attention do whatever you can to take it away". But they didn't give you everything. These pics were carefully chosen to only reveal a little bit as the TMs showed. If they were truly leaked photos you would have seen the face and the top of the club.

TRUST ME THESE PICS ONLY SHOWED WHAT CALLAWAY WANTED YOU TO SEE. And stall the attention of the TaylorMade pics. That is Business folks!

In the bag: Playing --- TaylorMade  Qi 10 (core) driver w/Fujikura Ventus Blue 6S. 3wd TM (OG) SIM (special smaller tour only head, same that TW was playing prior to the '24 Genesis approx 160cc) @ 15.*) with Fujikura Ventus 7-S.  5 wd TM SIM w/Fujikura Speeder 857TR-S (Japan made)

exactly what i said...

business 101

this is not our first rodeo - yet we all seem surprised.

honestly, for as hush hush as this product is/was - there are sure a TON of people that have a lot of information. A LOT OF INFORMATION. the new M1 was/is pretty unknown in technology, number of new patents, etc...

I am more interested in the weights or reinforce bars on the face rather than the highlight paint color.

The "jailbreak bars" are actually in the head behind the face. To put it as plainly as possible, it keeps the head and face from displacing and distorting thus allowing it to maximize power transfer.

Thanks for sharing some useful information.... To be honest it sounds gimmicky, I will be interested to see if it results in longer, straighter, more consistent drives or if they just say it does.

I've compared on trackman to my current GBB, 917 D3, M1... the numbers were there. It really is simple physics but without the graphite composite being able to make as strong and light as it is now, no one has been able to implement the weight in the head that they are with the jailbreak technology and I don't know that anyone has ever thought to stabilize the displacement and distortion of the face.

Actually I 'Typed it'...but same thing...might have mentioned that....yeah.

tumblr_mn2x890NjM1qk6zdio1_400.gif

...elaborate man, c'mon!

GBB Epic Fw is very similar to the current GBB Fw, but feels better with better shape and face height to me. SZ fw is similar to the 816 Alpha fw and it easier to hit than my 816 and looks a wee bit taller face at address and like the look of the face at address better...very easy to launch.

it sounds like a creative way around the R&A / USGA CT/COR restrictions. the name sounds gimmicky - but if it "cheats" the rules and allows for better ball speeds it could be game changer...time will tell.

About shafts the hzrdus offered as stock is a 50 gram shaft similar in color to the t1100g. But it says t800 and mid spin on the label. The rogue max is the most solid stock offering.SZ have a slightly larger footprint and is said to be higher moi with the heavy weight at the back than regular model.both also have green accents on the crown. The SZ fw looks really nice and has the sole weights of the 816.

From what I know it's kinda what they were going for. I've heard from my contacts that it's a game changer so I am really looking forward to seeing if that's true. So far I'm impressed.

Hoping the Epic has Epic Forgiveness as well. The GBB '15 goes a long way in that regard.

In my limited testing of the Epic SZ over the Gbb, they are on the same level as each other for forgiveness, with maybe a slight edge to the Epic SZ. The Epic is higher moi thant the Epic SZ, so I am assuming even easier to hit versus the older GBB.

The Epic sounds like the better fit for me. In my experience, if you don't consistently find the face on a low spin driver, you pay for it. Dearly. Can't wait for these to hit retail!
