Ping i200 Irons: In-Hand Photos

How is it compared to the iblades? I've played forged my whole life, would cast feel different?

If you still want that buttery soft feel, when you work your 4 iron baby fade into a tucked right rear flag, stick with what you have.

:taunt:

i play mizuno and callaway forgings mostly and I've always felt that the s55 and iblade felt every bit as good. Ping is the best in regards to feel and sound on their cast irons. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

no no no Bogey, this is WRX, you're wrong. the only way an iron feels good or feels soft is if it's forged  . j/k.

ya know I'm sure the majority of people listening to Hudson Swafford stripe irons shots over the weekend had no idea what was in his Bridgestone staff bag.... PING S55.

S55 felt great to me! iblades feel even better!

I change too much to list it. Working on that...

Can the i200 irons be easily bent, or are they difficult to bend like ping irons of old?

431 stainless steel is a little softer/weaker than 17-4, which is what Ping traditionally uses, so I'm sure they will be bendable without undue effort. I've bent 431 SS iron sets before and while they require more effort than carbon steel clubs for sure, it's a very doable process using common loft/lie equipment.

Thanks. The reason that I am asking is that I have difficulties with Ping's lie progression through a set; at any particular colour code I find the long irons too flat and the short irons too upright. One option for dealing with that is to order a set with multiple different colour codes, e.g. long irons in yellow, mid irons in blue and short irons in black, but I would prefer not to do that as I would prefer to have the irons all "match" with the same colour dot. The alternative, which I leaning towards, is to order a set in a particular colour code (say blue) and then bend the long irons upright and bend the short irons flat. The actual lies will not match to the colour of the dots on the irons, but I don't particularly care about that. I just wanted to make sure that bending by a local shop would be feasible. I realize one can send irons back to Ping to bend, but that seems like a lot of hassle.

Sounds like it would be easiest to order the long, mid and short irons in different color codes straight from Ping. Let them do the work. If you want them to match, just use a little nail polish for whatever color you want or remove the color dot all together. That seems easier than taking your new irons to be adjusted as soon as you get them.

I hit the demo 7-iron in the golf shop when I stumbled upon it surprisingly (back when we were still looking at the Ping Japan website for images & video). In my opinion, they feel significantly better than my i25 irons. I felt the iE1 felt very similar to i25's so I never purchased them. But the i200, there is a difference. Enough for me to purchase. I will be ordering soon!

Question: is the Power Spec option the same club just bent a few degrees stronger? Or, is it a different club (different cast) entirely?

I'm not 100% sure but I doubt it's a different cast. I have a hunch that's what the added bounce is for so that when they bend them stronger there is enough bounce to still be effective.

Anyone know if you can get both a bounce and a back grind done on these?

Tried these today when getting an iron fitting. They feel great when hitting the shot however were constantly shorter than other clubs such as callaway APEX and offered similar forgiveness. They look great though can't deny that

Lofts are weaker, to truly compare you'd have to hit the "power spec" lofts against the callaways

Agreed... no longer about the number on the club. The i200 6 has about the same loft as the apex 7. Compare lofts not iron numbers

Question: is the Power Spec option the same club just bent a few degrees stronger? Or, is it a different club (different cast) entirely?

This is a good question.

I contacted PING about this:

"Power Spec fitting option which is the same head with a strengthened loft..."

But that doesn't really answer the question, though.

My guess would be it's the same head, but just bent to stronger lofts. Just thinking from a cost standpoint it wouldn't really make sense for Ping to have two different molds just for a few different degrees of loft.

Yep, and Power Spec is an option across the whole range too: iBlade, i200, G and G-Max.

Got a chance to hit the 7 iron today. It looked nice over the top. Not too bulky. Seemed incredibly forgiving. I hit a couple way towards the toe and only lost about 3-5 yards, where I would have thought I would have lost quite a bit more distance.

I agree, my guess would be the same, that it's the same club. Which I believe is great, it's still a solid amount of bounce..too much for some but perfect for me as I tend to excavate!

I did not know that, and that is interesting. I just always assumed that Ping would automatically colour the dots to the actual lie angle. So you are saying I could ask Ping to make a set with different lie angles (e.g. bend the 6 iron 1* upright, bend the PW 2* flat, etc.) and then specify that regardless of all that I want all the dots "coloured" black (or whatever other colour)? If so, that will be the answer to my dilemma!

I ordered my set today. I talked to ping about this because I originally wanted to do a bounce grind on them to play closer to my s55. I also wanted the power spec lofts to help keep the trajectory down. They said that the power spec lofts reduce bounce. They bend the heads. I asked specifically. Knowing that, I just did a back grind and the power spec lofts because the lofts turn down the bounce based on how much they strengthen the lofts.

Back Grind ? thanks

The back grind takes a small amount off the back of the sole which lowers the front of the face down making it easier to manipulate the face. Also narrows the sole making it easier to work the ball.

It's based on the power spec lofts. If they tweak the head 2* stronger, 2* degrees of bounce are taken out of the head. 1* stronger, 1* less bounce, and so on and so on.

Just wondering how you settle into a grind such as this back grind? It's not like there's a place to really try these different grinds. Would seem like an expensive experiment to decide which one you'd like. Really interesting and cool to discuss though. I'm assuming they finish the club so that it'll not rust?
