Thoughts on Couch Potatoes Calling in Penalties

In case anyone hasn't been watching the LPGA Ana Invitational event today, Lexi Thompson was given a 4 stroke penalty after a viewer called in a penalty from the prior day. She fought back and made it into a playoff (eventually lost). Many pros, including Sir Tiger, are giving their 2 cents on the absurdity of this situation. Seems to happen on the PGA Tour from time to time as well.

 

Anyone else think they should get rid of the practice of taking calls from viewers?

Watched the video how in the hell could they tell she moved it forward? Video seems inconclusive at best. Is is going to take a player suing the rules officials for damages for this s*** to stop?

It's completely insane. In other sports that have video review, every player/play/down/etc is televised for the entirety of the event. Golf is only those who are playing well, near the top of the leaderboard. Somebody who was at the bottom of the list today never saw a second of on screen time, which means they could have had several things happen, but were never called in because they weren't seen. It needs to be equitable.

Lexi has far more class than I would have in this situation. I have been watching a replay of the Super Bowl and frankly I see a lot of missed calls. In fact maybe the LPGA should go back and review every round of every player and see who else maybe messes up a mark or anything else that has no outcome on the actual score.

This Lexi situation is absurd. It appears she moved the ball, what, 1" sideways? Shouldn't really be a penalty at all. A 4 shot penalty is just insane.

 

 

That said, I'm not completely opposed to someone calling in a rules violation. What if someone blatantly cheated and the only thing stopping them from getting away with it is the tv camera?

What if someone review all of Ryu's shots and finds something is she getting a DQ? After the call they should have reviewed it and deremined it had no effect on the outcome. At worse a 2 shot penalty.

If she didn't just turn the ball over to get the line face-up (I.E. went through her whole routine) and moved it the fraction she moved it, would we all be here right now?

 

That's the underlying absurdity in all of this. Only because it was it was quick was it spotted. And a day later, mid-round penalty? Congrats on losing my interest LPGA.

Apparently it wasn't a couch potato or armchair fan, it was an experienced rules official on a major tour who called in. Probably the only person who cares enough about the rules to do it.

 

But I think there are issues going forward about:

 

1) The time that passed before the penalty was given.

2) The double penalty, why should you be further penalised for an incorrect scorecard for a penalty you incur a day later? The rule of incorrect scorecard is meant to protect the integrity of the game but there's no way that she could have signed a correct scorecard in this instance, so the additional penalty is unfair.

Results have been announced and the championship is over. You can review and call/email all you want, but they aren't going to do anything about it.

"Couch potatoes" don't know the Rules. Someone who does know the Rules emailed the Committee. The purpose is to get it right.

Knock it off is what I say. Unless you're there and under contract for the event, you don't get a say in how the rules are handled for the event.

It's one of the dumbest things going on in major sports period. What more can you say? You have people with nothing to do with an event calling in penalties a day after the competition is over. It's fairly unprecedented, and dubious rulings have marred multiple major events recently now.

The worst part of all of this is that as television, phones and cameras get higher definition, it will only get worse.

 

You're going to have video analysts going over tapes for an hour to determine if a ball moved a fraction of a millimetre

 

As others have said, it's humiliating to the game and they should just stop it. If an nba ref misses a call they don't assess it a day later
