Is a bogie free round a goal for you?

Recommended Posts

I was having a beer with a few low cappers today and the conversation came up about having a bogie free round. I could match the guys in terms of low scores, but I could not say for sure if I ever had a bogie free round. For the guys I was chatting with this was a BIG goal for them and though we all had 67's only one of us had made a bogie free 18. I have to say this will now be a goal for me.

Is this something you are shooting for?

My best friend and I have two goals every time one of us plays:

1: Bogey Free

2: Hit every green in regulation

When one of us plays now we'll text each other "The dream is dead" when we make a bogey or miss a green.

The dream is rarely achieved...

It's not a goal of mine. If it happens I will be happy about it. But I do make mistakes and bogeys are the result. So I don't set out to play perfect golf

That's probably be how I break par. I don't make a ton of birdies, but my better rounds, I don't make a ton of bogies either. Some of my lowest rounds had doubles in them, and no birdies. I shot 77 with two doubles, one bogie, and no birdies.

While I would rather make more birdies, those days are also fulfilling, because it's a ton of consistent golf. Assuming par is the goal and birdie is a bonus, looking back and knowing that I met my goal on 15/18 holes is as good as the days where I had 4 birdies, 2 doubles, 5 bogeys, 6 pars. I beat my goal on more holes, but I failed to reach my goal on more as well. From a consistency stand point, and at this point in my game, I'm taking notice of consistency more than anything. I've had a few rounds that could've broken par if more putts had fallen, and it's super frustrating, but I know that with consistency the opportunities will keep coming, vs playing wildly and having more hit or miss type days.

Anyways, yes, that's definitely a goal. A day with 5 birdies and 4 bogey's is still under par, but an even 72, with 18 pars is a blemish free day, and there's a lot to be taken from both of those.

Who comes up with this crap. Less than 2% of all golfers are less than 2 handicap. Probably less than half of them shoot sup par golf rounds. But here on the forum we have way to many golfers who shoot 67 and a very high percent of 300 yard drive golfers. And this guy sits around with 3 people who shoot 67 regularly. Give me a break

You're right, he's obviously lying.

Because statistically most golfers are poor performers it's impossible for 3 guys that have shot 67 to sit at the same table. But, I bet you buy lottery tickets.

I think it would be cool if it happened but I can't honestly say it's a goal. My goal is to shoot the lowest score every time I go out. I've played 9 holes without a bogey but also without a birdie and came away more frustrated than I probably should've been. And, there is such a thing as a really good bogey (say you hit a tee shot OB and then "birdie the second ball" to make a bogey).

I think I would like to hit to hit all 18 greens in regulation (still likely to make a bogey the way I putt) before I played a round bogey-free.

Pretty much everyone would be thrilled with a bogey-free 67. If we're assuming a certain score (say par of 72), I'd much rather have nine birdies and nine bogeys (high variance) than 18 pars (low variance). I think it's better to have the ability to go low and need to improve on consistency than the other way around. There was a post regarding this scenario from a while back where a college coach asked two high school kids what they shot at a tournament. The first kid shot par with all pars. The second kid shot par with like five birdies and five bogeys. The coach went with the second kid.

After playing this game for almost 50 years I don't have many items left on my bucket list, but a bogey free round is still there. It's actually moved to the top of the list, and like Golfmonster09, I have two golf buddies with the same goal and we commiserate with each other. Sometimes I play better after an early bogey as I stop thinking about it. I think the farthest I've gotten is 14 holes.

PS: Hey Kevin- I shot a 67 a couple of years ago. It was on a par 71 course though so it doesn't count.

Bogey free is always a thought. I believe the closest I've got was 2 bogeys and finished 2 under, but it's not like my first bogey was on 17. If I'm bogey free through 7-8, I usually become aware of it. I think I've played a bogey free through 9 once or twice at the home course. Golf is difficult.

Another good topic by you. Bogey free used to be a goal until I realized that's a bit ridiculous to expect with this game. Golf is not a perfect game. Bad bounces, putts that somehow break the other way, etc..It's just too difficult to try and be perfect all the time...It'll drive you crazy or ruin a good round in my experience.

I just want to make more birdies than bogeys really. I don't worry about a bogey or two anymore and I shoot lower scores now, go figure.

I have a couple 1 bogie rounds both frustrating because as soon as I realized I was on a bogey free run into the back nine boom bogey.

GIR streak I have made it until the 10th hole without missing a green. Have a handful of 16-17 gir rounds but no 18/18. Tons of 14/14 fairway rounds

Just curious. How does shooting under par on a par 71 not count? Or is that a joke that I somehow missed? Wouldn't be the first time lol

It is for me. Loosely. Given the time and frequency at which I can play that's probably still a few years down the road for me and I'm fine with that. Just being able to play "bogey golf" is a joy for me. I've been as low as a 12 hcp and right now I'm probably a 16-18 hcp. For a lot of people that would seem high, but I'm perfectly happy and satisfied scoring in the 80's. Obviously, I want to shoot in the 70's eventually, but I'll get there one day.

My main objective before every round now is avoiding penalty strokes and hazards. If I can do that, I feel like I've gotten around the course rather cleanly. Relatively speaking. The beautiful thing about golf is that there's always something more to chase when you've reached a personal goal.
