I just shot my best round last week.. -2 70.. it was on a course ive never played.. ive been playing it over and over again in my head.. not sure what the difference was.. i wasnt thinking much beyond yardage and target.. no swing thoughts.. putts were just dropping all over the place! It was fun.. i knew i had a good round going in the back of my mind.. but i kept trying to forget about it!

AND i had a double.. drive in the middle of fairway.. bladed wedge over the green.. chunky pitch.. better pitch on and 2 putts.. then proceeded to make 2 more birdies.. just that kind of day!

in my earlier comments the best rounds i reported were like 35-40 years ago--am 71--and the most recent was probably the last time i broke 80 about 3 years ago..

i shot 37-41(78) on a 6100-yard course i played for the first time and was even par going to 9 and remembered i had 2 birdies by then but bogeyed the par 5 9th which was a relatively easy par 5 with a poor 2nd shot into heavy rough..

i hit 6 out of the 8 greens before that but had a poor 2nd 9 and lucky to shoot a +5(41)...

haven't broken 80 since..

My best rounds the thing that stands out is that I play as if I am on auto pilot. I don't think of the swing, I'm in a zone. All I do is look at a target and just hit the ball. This zone is stress free and almost surreal. Kink of like Shivas Irons zen.

Put up a personal best today, what was unique?

Driver was solid, not spectacular, but solid. Short irons were on point, and the putter was hot as fire for some of the day. Mental game took a dive for 3 holes, but at least I recovered. Takes a few cylinders firing to get the motor to run right... the more the better.

Playing with my future father in law. Was trying to convince him I was good enough for his daughter. Wasn't even thinking about golf. On 18th, we shook hands and he told me I shot a 70(1 under). He also said anyone that could talk about his daughter for 18 holes straight was the right one. I have shot lower, but this stands out.

I had a 72 yesterday, previous best round in a medal was an 81! I'd never broken 80 before yesterday!

I remember 3 shots, and 1 more than the others.

Shot 1 - given the wave through on a par 3 11th. Short 170 yds hole. Big wind behind. Went 8 iron, 4 people watching around the green (they'd given us the wave through) Wide narrow green, I stuck it middle of the green, and it finished back right, but with the wind, people watching and they were also people I knew it was a nice shot to play.

Shot 2 - 6 Iron 170 yards into the 18th green. Knowing I was on a super score I just wanted a nice connection and for it to head towards the green. Semi rough, but nice lie. Hit it sweet, left of the flag pin high, 2 putts for a par and a 72 was all wrapped up!

Shot 3. Par 5, 205 to the front of the green, 4 iron. Wind with, so knew a well struck shot would make the green. Swung so well all day, lined up, and full shank into trees on the right!! Had to chip out, then onto the green and what made it even worse was a 3 putt. Walked off with a 7! If that 1 shot had gone to plan I'd have walked off with a level par round!!

79 was my best round ever and what really stood out was my putting. I had several 10+ foot par saves that really helped the score.

In my lowest actual round ever, my putting was very solid but nothing spectacular. But I do recall my lowest-ever nine hole score, for that hour-plus I do not think I could have missed a putt if I'd deliberately aimed in the opposite direction. By the time the third bomb went in on the next-to-last hole it was like an out of body experience.

I'd have thought I was dreaming if I hadn't left a 20-footer on the last hole six inches short and dead on line. :busted_cop:

What stood out for me was how little my playing partners talked.

They knew I was playing well and didn't want anything getting in my head.

When I shot my 76 it was in a regular weekend dogfight game. So the guys playing with me were my partners for the day and it was the same thing. By about the 11th or 12th hole they were just keeping out of my way and trying to talk about football or something to avoid saying the obvious..which was that I was going to make us a lot of money if I simply held it together!

Another thing I remember was that just a few weeks before I had played two days in a row with one of the best players in the group (he was a +1, +2 in a group of mostly hackers). He'd taken me aside and given me a pep talk and insisted that I get myself to the driving range with some alignment sticks and work on getting my feet/hips/shoulders all square to the target line and also slowing my tempo way, way, way down. He said watching me was painful because I had no idea where I was aiming and I whipped the club back and forth so fast it was ridiculous.

So the day I had my 76 I went and found him eating lunch after the round. Showed him the scorecard (and to be be clear, this was 12 shots better than my average and 5 shots better than I'd ever scored at that course before) and he just shrugged and said, "Yeah I told you so". What can I say, when he's right he's right.

I'm usually really good at scrambling, but what stands out is that I didn't need to scramble much, I just hit more greens than normal, made a couple of putts for bird, and didn't make any mistakes.

During my best round, (+4, 74), I was on in 2, most of the day, birdied 3 straight holes at one point. I don't remember necessarily sticking it close too often. I just made a bunch of long putts, 10-20'.

Also, had 2 double bogeys.

3 birdies, 12 pars, 1 bogey, 2 double bogeys.

Best round by far.

My first even par 9 (league round). My previous low 9 hole round was 39.

I had what I felt like was the worst night getting off the tee. Water ball on the first hole, Stuck behind a tree on the 2nd hole. I was 3 over thru 2 and was already upset with myself. I still missed most of the fairways from that point but everyone was only a few feet from the fairways. irons and long wedges were getting close to on on greens but then the putter got hot and I hit back to back 15-20 foot putts. Found 3 birdies over the remaining 7 holes with 4 pars. It was strange. I walked off of #9 with my lowest score ever on 9 yet still didn't feel like it was a good round. The rest of my group was more excited then I was. Odd feeling that night.

Honestly, I was lucky. I was trying to shoot even par for the first time after hitting a terrible tee shot on 17 (215 yard par 3) tough green, straight up hill. I was long right so I was dead. It was wet, I hit a flop shot and it hit soft and went in. I went from looking at bogey, possibly double, do birdie and one under. I simple par on the easy 18th and I shot 69.

A complete lack of fear.

I shot 29 last night in league. All i was thinking was how i would attack every shot. I never once played defensive or thought about a miss. I ATTACKED.

I wish i wasnt such a mental midget and did this all the time.

Best round ever score-wise (66) what stood out was the number of putts I made. Had 9 birdies that day and made so many putts. Playing partner said "I've never seen someone putt like that before".

Best round non score-wise what stood out was going eagle-birdie-birdie to finish, shoot -3, and make it out of us open local qualifying. Hearing my buddy yell at my ball on the 18th to go in as it crept to the hole is especially memorable. I was the last group to finish and 6 guys shot -2 and were waiting for a playoff to start for 1 spot. After my putt dropped my buddy looked at me (he checked scores before I putted) and said "you don't knowhow big that was".

63 so 5 under back in 97. Holing 7 putts all of about 25 feet stands out. Also getting up and down about 6 times with my 60 degree Mizuno. Surreal day.

I hit it a long way and am extremely reliant on par 5s for my birdies. Of course, the flipside of this is that my rounds are always stressful off the tee—a block at 240 yards is probably ok, but at a block at 290 yards is typically disastrous.

Because of this, I struggle to go low and am generally quite happy if I can scrape together 3 birdies and 5 or fewer bogeys (and no doubles!).

During my best round ever, I was on fire with the driver. Everything was carrying ~305, and I managed to hit the ball to very good positions even when I missed fairways.

Thanks to this performance off the tee, I was able to birdie the four par 5s and nearly made eagle on two of them.

Of course, driving it well is also helpful on par 4s, and I made par on 8/10 of those, mostly because I only had to hit flip wedges into all but a couple greens. Unfortunately, the par-4 3rd is a very tight dogleg right with creek left—and a fairway that kicks the f*cking ball left to boot—and I hit a draw (with a 5-iron!) into the left hazard off the tee and made double there.

It's a shame that the biggest negative stands out from this round, but it is what it is. I knew going in that my ability to navigate the 3rd hole successfully would have a big impact on my day (as it always does on this course), and even though I went in with a plan, I was unable to execute that plan as well as I would have liked.

Bottom line: You're going to experience adversity in nearly every round of golf, and if you've played the course before, you can often anticipate some of this adversity before it happens.

The best you can do is go in with a plan and try to execute, but when something is on the line (a tournament, a bet, your best score, etc), you have got to execute.

Every round in which I've gone really deep, including my lowest round, was similar in that I had extreme clarity on almost every shot. As soon as I got to my ball, I knew exactly the shot to play and could see it and feel it. No doubts; no second guessing. The other side of it was that I knew I was going to execute and hit a good shot. Complete trust. I felt like I was going to birdie every hole. Flow states like this are some of the most amazing things from a human performance perspective.

When I go between 69-73, it's because of confidence in my ball striking. Driver, fairway woods, irons amd wedges all require different swings but they require the same level of confidence. From that point, whether I'm above or below par depends on my putter.

My two best friends getting into a fight on the 13th hole. One guy bladed 3 balls into the creek behind the green (OB). The other guy made fun of him, saying that this was an expensive round. The first friend replied "I've been taking them out of your bag all day, you got them all for free!" This pissed off friend number two, who called friend one something horrible. So friend number one grabbed a handful of balls out of friend 2's bag and started hitting them in the water on purpose. They ended up trying to unhook and run-over each other's clubs before our 4th stepped in and told them to leave the course.

This action kind of killed my momentum. I was six under at that point. I parred out, and as rattled as I was at what I had seen, thought that that was a good finish. But I will never forget that fight haha.
