Using a Tee on Par 3's

Charlie Rymer just said you should always use a tee on a par 3 and then gave a personal anecdote about Nicklaus telling him to always tee it up. How many of you guys use a tee every time? I do not use them when I have short irons in my hands but I do use them for mid-irons to 3 wood. I never really thought about using a tee for certain clubs or where the cut off is but I have found my questionable method to be somewhat effective. Perhaps I should start teeing it up every time and I can win 18 majors.. I will keep you guys posted

It depends, into the wind I don't always since I find I hit it a few degrees lower. If the tee box is immaculate sometimes I don't either

I always do, and I've heard the Nicklaus opinion on that previously as well.

 

It does give me a little more confidence standing over the ball, though I know I can hit the same shot off grass. About the only issue I run into at times is hitting the ball too high on the face, and losing distance.

Always. I believe it was Jack or Arnie who said teeing it up allows you to have a perfect lie every time.

I'm too lazy.. Just drop the ball on the ground and find a high spot like a divot edge and roll. I once saw Freddie Couples put a heel into the turf to make a little mound. I agree with the theory behind it but I would only consider it with a low iron or hybrid where turf interaction isn't the main feedback.

I believe she slams the club head into the turf instead of her heel.

I don't use a tee for any iron unless there isn't a good grassy spot to hit off of in the tee box.

Depends on how I'm feeling. In general I am more likely to tee it up the longer the hole is. Some that I play are only a lob/gap/sand wedge and I usually don't tee those up, just give myself a good lie.

Shoot, tee it up everywhere, par 3's, 4's, fairways, rough, greens... makes putting tough come to think of it. More seriously, everything pitching wedge and longer off the tee box gets a tee.

I don't use a tee unless I'm hitting driver. 3W any hybrid or iron always gets hit off the deck.

I always use a tee, but go as low as I can. Ideally I like the bottom of the ball to be level with the top of the turf. I have to admit that teeing up lob and sand wedge still makes me nervous.

The only time I don't use a tee on a par 3 is if the ground is rock hard and I can't get one in far enough for the ball to stay up on it.

A tee, most of the time. Normally just a stub off a broken one I find up there. Really low, but essentially a 'perfect' lie. Why not?

Before, I didn't use a tee for anything shorter than long irons, but when I discussed this very topic with my golf instructor, who is a +2 to +3 HC, he said that he always tees it up "to the perfect lie", like stated above. So, since then I almost exclusively use a tee.

 

I have had issues with hitting too long, as teeing up can add to distance, and the majority of my shot distance tracking data is gathered from hitting "off the deck".

I also don't want my yardage skewed by the tee'd up shots, causing me to come up short from the fairway, but now when I look at my yardages, I just account for the longer distances being from a tee and stick to the lower 2/3 of my yardage.

 

I feel better clubbing down and hitting off of a tee. Hitting from a perfect lie, just barely tee'd up gives me tons of confidence! Though, if the tee box is nice and I like the distance, I'll sometimes still place my ball in a nice patch of grass and hit w/o.

I know it's mental but I feel like I hook it more off a tee...if I'm trying to hit a swooping draw, I'll tee it up.

On just a standard straight away shot with an iron, yes. With shorter irons or if I'm trying to hit a shot under the wind I won't always. I will add that with hybrids and 3w off the tee (either on par 3 or par 4) I won't because I do seem to hook them more off of a tee.

 

As for the idea of "only guaranteed 18 good lies", you might need to work on how you set the ball on the ground when not using a tee, lol. Mine is always perched, so not sure why you'd give yourself a bad lie ,lol.

I too use a tee on the box, regardless of the club I'm hitting. I feel its an advantage that's only able to be used once per hole. Why not better my chances?

Always tee it up, unless I'm playing pitch and putt with the kids. I always use a very short or broken tee. I hate using the long driver tees with irons.

i would never tee it up until one of my playing partners who i respect dearly says that i am throwing away an advantage by not using a tee.

I've always used a tee ever since.
