Things that bug me while watching pro golf.

Players pounding their chest when they make a big putt (see Ian Poulter/Houston Open edition). This annoyance is not confined to golf, it also invades football, basketball, baseball...

I don't get it. Is it supposed to show you have heart? It makes me think of a cat trying to get rid of a hairball. Especially Poulter, he has a catlike air anyway...

I normally hate this too - watching a DE pick off the backup QB during garbage time while down 44-7 and banging his chest irks me.

Poulter today, no problem. He manned up and swung his d at Hossler with an incredible birdie on 18. Go ahead, pound that chest.

Network tournament coverage that treats every broadcast as if the audience is watching golf for the first time. The endless regurgitation of the same generic talking points. The over-selling and the empty hype. The manufactured melodrama, etc.

The disingenuous, yet always selective, expressions of awe at how far the guys hit it.

Take the NBC crew. How do these guys keep their jobs?

Maltbie is useless. He can't see the ball or read a putt for shinola. Doesn't seem to matter.

I dare anyone to drink at each instance Gary Koch employs the word 'certainly': "Yes, he certainly does." " No, It certainly is not, Johnny".

Not only is it hyper-repetitive, it's completely devoid of insight and substance.

Jacobsen is the anti-renaissance man. The worst. His dilettantish forays into comedy and music qualify him for the 8th circle.

And, as if that wasn't enough, now we have Hicks, his company-man efforts always annoyingly apparent, a bit pathetic, milquetoast, generic, superfluous, who has seemingly become emboldened this year. Now comfortable providing his insights on swing planes, ball speeds, player psychology.

Well done and spot on ... Hicks,as you superbly point out, is just a simple mind that should had been replaced years ago.

Man, don’t say soemthing like that in the Houston Open tournament thread (like I did). For the record, I’m in agreement. Even though if anyone was really justified in doing it, it was probably him in that spot.

Like Gary Koch but is doing too much of the out of breath groan type announcing

I find his voice very irritating along with the 20 times per round he says "wow"

At first glance I thought you were talking about Poulter's voice :) Weak and gravely and makes me want to clear my throat. Kind of reminds me of Rod Stewart.

I hate it when they say "this chip shot is makeable, this sand shot it makeable, this 25 footer is makeable"

All shots are makeable.

Almost. All shots where you have the ability to hit the ball all the way to the hole are makeable.

The best was on Sunday. Poulter had a putt, that the graphic said had. 19% chance of making. He grazed the hole. Johnny Miller "that was an easy putt".

He had a 81% chance of NOT making it. Yet it was an easy putt.

I have nothing to agree or disagree with here but this post is so well written! :hi:

I'm annoyed when Johnny Miller has to break down a swing and tell us why a shot went errant when we all know that if he didn't already know the result of the shot, he's have no clue where the ball actually ended up.

Another peeve is the constant drone of airplanes dragging around advertising banners all freakin' day.

Hicks annoys me, too. He reminds me of the William Hurt character in "Broadcast News".

I looked him up to see if he had any relevant background and found out that he's married to Hannah Storm. So he's got that going for him.

Just curious, is there anything about tv golf coverage that doesn't annoy the crap out of everyone?

I just enjoy watching golf, I don’t care who is doing the TV. Some I like more than others, but I am a fan of all golf, so I don’t pay as much attention to some of them.

Another thing that annoys me a lot on tour. Pros throwing their equipment towards the caddie in anger. Yes the caddie gets paid to carry a bag and give tips, yes the caddie gets to travel the world. But the caddie is also a human being that doesn’t deserve leftovers cause a pro is upset.

Yes, this is quite entertaining.... and amusing. ANYBODY can analyze a swing and point out the problem when they already know the results.

It would be fun to let these guys analyze a swing without knowing the results and then tell us where the ball went.

Just remember their job description. It's to entertain us. So if we are amused, irritated, upset, laughing, shouting or anything but ignoring them, they are doing their job.

All the love for NBC, but I'm sure you guys still watch the FOX destroy the US Open every year.......lol

At Chambers Bay Brendan Grace blocked a driver OB late in the final round, then piped a 3W. Greg Norman broke down the swing on slo mo explaining why it started right and moved right in the air. The swing they showed in slo mo was the 3W.

I love when they catch a F bomb live. Makes me feel like it's Saturday morning with the guys.

I was actually watching for some reason (don't watch much seniors, sorry, Champions, tour) when Mark Wiebe instantly became the most foul mouthed golfer on tour. It was very clear, no mistaking what he said. My jaw dropped, and then I started giggling uncontrollably while the commentators scrambled - "We apologize for the language you just heard on our live coverage...."
