Things that bug me while watching pro golf.

That's like some doctors. I play golf with three doctors and we always use their first name, not "Dr. so and so". And when they send an email to their golf buddies, it's always just their name.

But there is at least one member of our club who signs his emails "Dr so and so". That always strikes me as pretentious.

Doctors drive me nuts. I played in a foursome once with 3 other guys I hadn't met.

First one says "I'm Dr ______."

Second says "I'm Dr ______."

Third says "I'm Steve."

Halfway through the round I say "So Steve.. what kind of work do you do?"

He says "I'm am oncologist. How about you?"

Two doctors who insist on being called "doctor" and one very esteemed doctor who insists on being called "Steve".

That happened to me once...one guy though. I responded, "So your first name is doctor?"

Most definitely spitting!

Especially the world no.1! Every tee, every green & parts in between. Great gob fulls of saliva/mucous/bacteria hawked up from parts unknown.

They got into Sergio for spitting in the hole/cup. Not good but at least you knew where the expectorant was.

With DJ & his like minded brethren you could be sitting in it, treading in it, your ball rolling through it everywhere on the course.

Maybe they should bring out some spitoons.

I was always taught that it was bad manners to spit in public and that saliva swallowed was essential for good digestive health.

Thats my bitching done for today.

Cheers

I could not agree more. It's a vile habit.

When I coached baseball, I used to bench kids for doing it. 8-10 year olds mind you.

Other than CBS's coverage? 2-3 shots and then another commercial. Getting almost unwatchable.

It was much better this weekend at the Honda.

Also, Lanny Wadkins, good lord its unbearable! On the other hand, i do like Roger Maltby.

I was so happy when Lanny Wadkins left CBS. Between he and Nantz...ye Gods

I hate watching the pros putt the most. When it’s 20ft away and they react as if it’s suppose to be automatic in the hole.

Especially when they show on the graphic it's a 9% chance he'll make it.

After a shot, when they let the club fall to the ground and slump their shoulders like they just hit the worst hack in the history of golf, and then the ball lands perfectly in the center of the green.

HV3. If you've ever met him in person away from a tournament you'd know why.

Ok I'm stumped.

Who the heck is HV3?

Sounds like an old brand of Titelist balls. HP2, HVC...etc

Pretty sure Harold Varner III - surprised me too (as WideSpread Panic said above), but I guess we don't see the real side of most of these guys

I'll play devil's advocate here (since I'm from Jersey too, I can do this.), And say we don't see them smile and appear to enjoy what they do as much as we think they should because it's their job.

Rory was asked if he still plays 18 holes for fun. His answer was "Not anymore."

With that said..I share your misery with winter and basically having to take 4 months off (we got lucky this fall, could play through Thanksgiving).

No worries. My post was a definite "devil's advocate" kind of post. I know that golf is their career. I can't begin to know what it is like competing on the PGA Tour, where everyone is so damn good. These guys are at the pinnacle of their sport. Lots of money at stake. I totally get it. But it still gnaws at me when they all look so miserable.

And it's not like these guys are out there playing for the Steelers vs the Bengals, where every guy on the other team is literally trying to come as close to killing you as humanly possible without actually killing you. These guys are out there on a golf course, just taking care of their own business--them against the course and the entire field. Get out there on a beautiful day, on an amazing golf course, make some money, and move on to the next tournament.

All the while, I probably have 50 WRX posts for every round of golf that I can actually get out there and play, in my truncated golf season here in NJ. Oh well--is what it is. Just venting and preaching to the choir. Been a long.....winter. All that said, some of the guys at the Honda Classic this past weekend seemed to be pretty easygoing. Tommy Fleetwood seemed to be enjoying himself. Even Luke List seemed pretty chill despite being in contention.

I gave WGC a chance, again. Best parts are US commercial breakes. As we get uninterrupted golf. But when the break ends, we habe to watch either Mexico logo or David Duval in the booth. Then five to ten shots and break or another pointless booth talk.

Seems like the golf is getting less and less coverage and for me the breaks were at least golf. In US I guess Cialis ads?

So after 30 minutes I had to stop the misery.

The commercials have more air time than the golf. I must have seen the new Rogue commercial 10,000 times in the past month.

close-ups on guys faces while they are standing waiting to shoot.

when you see a ball marker close to the hole, and you're wondering how it got there, because you know it would have taken a pretty nice shot to get there, but it wasn't televised.

i'm sure there is a lot more...

But you still miss 95% of the shots on course and you end up with 15 minutes of broadcast of 5 hour round. I do not understand the appeal of current US golf broadcast, who is it targeted to, not golf fans anyway.

I love this thread. I love you guys!!! Very therapeutic.

Was it Maltbie that just couldn't keep his mouth shut during Phil's putt in the playoff?? I mean...Hicks and sad clown Jacobsen finally bestowed peace and quiet upon us for five seconds while Phil was lining up and over his birdie put to win, and Rog just couldn't let it be. He blurted out the most useless thing as if he had a voice box spasm.

Somehow, somewhere along the line, these guys, in all sports, starting thinking that they get paid by the word. Just shut up! I'm not blind....I can see what's going on.....the commentators are adding absolutely nothing most of the time.

The old "he's not afraid to go low" or "he has no fear in these situations" comments, really? I'm sure these golfers get on the first tee and tell and tell themselve" man, I'm sure afraid to go low today, I guess I will just spray and pray". Also, the Brat Pack, Speith,Thomas,Fowler and others who all hang around the 18th hole when one of them is going to win so they can hug and kiss on each other! Glad to see old man Mickelson sit Thomas down yesterday, especially after Jacobsen had spent five minutes telling us how fearless Thomas was and how he was going to drain that put for par on the playoff hole then Thomas whiffed it and wasn't even close!
