Taylormade P790 Irons

Hit the 7i on Sunday, stock stiff - when I buy my long irons, I'll be bending them weak. These irons are pretty darn long and low spin.

4200 spin on a 7 iron? Never seen such a thing. Is that a misread perhaps? Would be totally unplayable.

it was not -- i hit a whole bunch of shots and the average spin was probably closer to 5k -- but still under it. i'll be getting these bent weaker for obvious reasons.

I had similar spin numbers with the P790 7 iron in the low 4K range.

Yeah but that guy above is swinging his 7i ~20% faster than you were. No increase in the spin is concerning, although you can see his LA was only 12* which means he presents a lot less loft than you, so SOME lower spin might be expected. As you can see his ideal rate would start just below 6k.

makes sense. and to be fair I would say my average would have a spin of more like 4900 or so. Clubs come Thursday with PX LZ shafts so I will get on a monitor and see.

That seems to be this club's MO... Low spin, high launch. What intrugues me is the 1.44 smash he was getting which is f'ing nuts for a 7i. I'd be willing to potentially weaken the lofts as much as possible and even put in a higher launching shaft for that kind of smash on my irons. If the 7i was getting 1.44.... would a 5i get 1.48 or more? That's incredible honestly.

i haven't hit a single iron that gave me smash like the 790 has. my average was something like 1.41 i believe over the course of roughly 25 shots or so. i'm weakening the lofts by 3* in the 4 and 5 irons, and 2 degrees in the 3i.

lol, well I'm just intrigued because the 790's seem to be right up my alley minus the mega low spin. Still, 1.41 is high, although I suspect I personally would not get that much smash because I'm not lowering my dynamic loft as much as you do. I'd love to gain a club of distance though over my irons right now as long as my spin doesn't drop off the map.

i've noticed in fittings that higher spinning shafts (KBS, PXi, C-Taper Lite, DG XP) have been the go-to for better players looking to use them as irons - while the guys looking to pick up the long irons (specifically 3,4) as driving irons, don't mind the low spin and are ok with the stock DG 105's.

REMEMBER -- it's not necessarily the spin you have to keep an eye on as much as it is spin WITH a proper descent angle.

I have not noticed dramatic spin reduction transitioning from Apex Pros. Both sets had Recoil 110's. I'd say the 790's spin slightly less, but it's not like shots are bounding off the green or the ball is knuckling in the air. I am getting slightly higher launch angles and carry, with steeper descent angles, and that's probably making up for the slight spin difference. I'm about a half club longer on well struck shots, I'd estimate.

I've not been on a Trackman, so these are my observations after 27 holes and 2 range sessions.

I have a set coming - sounds like everything's in stock, so the Rep said they should be here by the end of the week !

They were put into the system Sunday afternoon.

Ladahl, I see you have(had) the PXG irons, so as one that also has them I am interested in your feedback on the new P790 irons.

When you get the chance please provide some thoughts between the two!

Thanks,

BB

Right I know it's the combo of the two things, and they should be both addressed by a good fitter.

Now I just need to decide to get fit now or wait til next year...I'm kind of considering getting fit just to see what shaft I fit in to these days.

Is there anywhere to see comparison pics of these with some other irons? Trying to get a feel for the size and how bulky they look compared to say a CF16 or whatever they're similar to? I currently play the CF16 and am looking for something that looks less bulky at address and spins a little more. Thanks.

They are very similar to CF16 IMO maybe a touch more thin all around.

Spin and all that is going to be determined by your swing, nobody here could tell you if CF16 will spin more or less.

I notice you have the Rblades tour irons in 7-pw. I used to play those and liked how they looked. How would you compare the look of the 790 to the Rbladez? Thanks!

That's about Driver wedge from where i am sitting right now. I saw them in person yesterday. Actually like the look a little better than my 770, especially the wedge and 9. didnt get to hit them though.

I played my first round with them today. I only bough 5-PW (KBS Tour FLT's in them) as I have a 4 hybrid I love.

Mixed bag results, to be honest. I'm not a great player at a 14 cap anyway; usually score in mid/high 80's but my irons were always the strongest part of my game. I've played Apex CF16's and loved them, but had an issue with ballooning shots from time to time.

With these, when well struck, I controlled my flight incredibly well compared to the CF16's. If I wanted high, it went HIGH, but if I wanted to keep it low, it did just that. Many, many holes I just dropped a ball at 170-180yrds out and hit 7 iron in various shots to see what happened.

The clubs are some how noticeably heavier than my CF16's. I have 30 gram shafts compared to 20 in my CF16's so that is obviously part of it, but I would think there has to be some different in the heads based on how they felt. It is taking getting used to; I didn't hit them particularly well today.

As I already said I dropped a ton of balls to get more shots in, but I always "scored" with 1 ball and those shots weren't always impressive if I had a 5 or 6 iron in hand (2nd and third go-round always improved). 7 was intermediate performance, and 8-PW were good/great.

Love the sound. Sounds 10X better than my CF16's

One constant....some how I have always had a little fade and now I have a little draw. Cant figure out why, but it was throughout the set.

Going to try and play more either this weekend or next week and get a better feel. So far I do like them, but a larger adjustment period than I was expecting.

*edited because my grammar was atrocious - I was driving and using speak to text...

Hit the 7i on Sunday, stock stiff - when I buy my long irons, I'll be bending them weak. These irons are pretty darn long and low spin.

Maybe it's the Indian and not the arrow? Here are my spin numbers with a 6 iron. Averaging right under 6k.

They look sweet. Unfortunately I will be buying them in a year when they come out with another club and the prices drop. Its going to be a long year......

You might be waiting longer than you think. TaylorMade has already significantly slowed down its release schedule and with the separation from adidas, that schedule will slow even more - particularly for the P line and the wedges. 18-24 months will be the norm for the players line of clubs. Wedges even longer.
