Taylormade P790 Irons

Recommended Posts

My P790's arrived yesterday afternoon, just in time to head out for a short golf vacation to Pinehurst today. I have no practice or playing time with the P790's at all, but I am going to leave the JPX900F at home and see if these new sticks can kick the Mizzy's out of the bag.

Keep us posted on how they do!

First post on GolfWrx, and I am excited to be getting them (hopefully soon as the Taylormade information site say they are being built) Hit these at a demo and all I can say is for me, they worked!

Today to both the Pro and my surprise, the AW came. I had been willing to change my order through just the pitching wedge as the wedges were back ordered. We thought that the Pro had arranged it so that I would get up to the PW next week with the AW on backorder until 5/21. Already in my bag, I hit it quite well today when the opportunity presented itself. Rest of the set is supposed to be here next Tuesday. Maybe the 2UDI will come then, although doubtful as I havent ordered it yet!

I am really starting to understand and feel the love the P790 is getting. I only have one in my bag but it certainly is performing for me at a distance I had struggled with . The best thing is that it does not take a perfect strike to get decent results but a perfect strike certainly rewards you.

Number 17 at home is the #4 HC hole, 389 from the middle tees but a severe uphill second shot. Yesterday the wind was straight into our face so after a well hit drive I still had 181 to the pin(yes only a 207 yard drive but north wind of around 15mph and this fairway is up a long steep slope and lastly, zero roll with rain the day before). I flushed the P790 5i and it seemed to go way too high with that wind just pushing it up higher and higher but on a great line. When the ball came down it was about 6 feet below the hole and pretty much setting on it's divot.

The P790 felt so soft and still almost heavy solid at impact. I am impressed. I love the P770 in the shorter irons, but I would have no hesitation playing P790 from 7 on if I wanted more height or distance. To keep the P770 ball flight where I want I have them bent 2 degrees strong so that does reduce the gap between my P770 6i and my P790 5i.

I can for sure see the P790 being part of some awesome combo sets and as for the P770, one of the very best irons I have ever hit!

Just can't figure these out. Played again yesterday and just can't get them dialed in. Hit my buddies 718 CBs and it was night and day. Better feel, better control.

Probably going to sell mine, which sucks because I was fit for these with freaking Oban shafts so I am going to take it in the shorts.

My udi finally arrived today!!

So apparently that’s just a 2 iron and not a UDI? What’s the difference? I could probably go to TM’s site and look...but I’ll just be honest and say I’m being lazy.

Nope, it’s a 2 iron UDI:)

My bad money...was hard to see the UDI stamp. Hope you hit it like a champ....me trying to hit a 2 iron would have the same success as me trying to hit a driver left handed.

Remember, these new utility driving irons are not like the old school 2 irons. These things are very easy to hit. Once you try one you will see for yourself how easy it is to hit

Mine arrived on Friday. Pro modus 120, standard length. I had PGASS check them, the lift and lie were right on. I've really only hit the PW and the 7i. So far, they dispersion is great, but they seem shorter than my Mizuno 800pro with dg s300. My mizuno are 1/2 long. So far p790 are certainly are not longer. Has anyone found the p790 shorter than their 8 year old clubs?

Well, it could be the shafts. I don't now much about Nippon shafts, but the DG S300 is 10g heavier (assuming the Nippons are 120g). Is your ball flight higher with the Nippons? If so, could be losing some distance due to that as well, but that depends on many factors.

I agree with the new utility irons being totally different than the old school long irons. I bought a set of 3-PW planning to sell the 3 iron immediately. Then I hit it. It is now my favorite club. I haven’t carried a 3 iron for 10 years, even when I was a +3. The short irons carry about the same as my gamers but the 3-5 irons are really great and give me confidence in the long game I haven’t had for a long time.

I only have the 5i but it is without doubt the longest 5i I have owned out of a bunch of sets. Mine just has the stock shaft and I killed it again today. It is so long I am not interested in trying to figure the gaps on a whole set and I LOVE the P770 from 6 to wedge but the P790 is the real deal. Your shaft is a great choice if you can swing it?

If you can't hit them I would sell them before hitting any more of them. Re-sale should be decent with only 2 clubs used. Nothing ever wrong with some well broke in Mizuno's!

Really want to pull the trigger on these, but I'm hesitant about the yardage gap issues. Would be interested in hearing more about anyone's issues (or non-issues)!

I'm coming from an ANCIENT set of 712 AP2s and the loft differences are insane... and I already have big gaps in my wedges.

No gapping issues. I have tried or gamed almost everything new over the last 10 years but recently went back to a set of Adams CMBs. For me, the P790 6-PW carries the same and the 3-5 irons go 5-10 yards further. More important than the 5-10 yard gains with the long irons is how much better my misses are.

I love these irons, the only bad thing about them is that I’m blowing them over greens. It’s going to take me awhile to adjust to the distance gains for sure. I guess it’s a good problem to have initially....

... Amen. It took a little while to get used to hitting my P790's farther, but the distance combined with the amazing forgiveness and the confidence to use my long irons without hesitation is well worth the effort. And once dialed in, they are just so forgiving and accurate. I have never had this kind of confidence in a set of iron and played waaaaaaay too many to list. Fwiw, I picked up another new set and am gonna measure them for loft/lie and swing weight. I am gonna install some Recoil Prototype 95's in this set but will measure them first.

Looking for an honest opinion.. I've been using the M2 for the past 2 years. I'm still a high handicapper who is slowing improving. I really like the look/feel of these clubs. Think it's worth it considering my handicap is still so high? I know they're targeted at better players but I really want some.

is iron play the reason you’re a high cap? or is it driving chipping and putting? if you’re halfway decent with your irons you’ll be fine. you may lose 1 or 2 strokes in a round because the ball doesn’t go as far on a slight mishit. but maybe not.

some people also improve faster with having consequences to bad strikes.

or... if you really want them, it’s not a financial burden, and you think it will increase your enjoyment of playing even if it may not decrease your scores, I say do it. but get fit for them!

and to be transparent, i’m in a similar boat, but I have 35-40 putts per round and at least a couple duffed chips and sliced drives. I don’t strike all my irons perfectly but it’s hardly the reason my cap is low 20s

The M2 irons will be more forgiving. If you don't work the ball and just play a straight shot, then the M2 would be better for that, unless you just don't like the look of the M2 (size, offset, etc.) and prefer a smaller looking iron with less offset. Personally, I find that sometimes I hit smaller irons better since it keeps me from over-swinging and forces me to focus more on making solid contact. But to each his own.

... I have posted this many times but feel every golfer that is interested in playing their best golf and posting their lowest score should play the most forgiving irons they can effectively play. This has very different meanings depending on your skill level. But the P790's are the most forgiving players iron I have played, with the possible exception being the 588TT's, but even then it is still very close. I do not think switching to P790's will improve your scores at this point in your journey, but I don't imagine they will hurt your scores either, if you are a decent ball striker. So it could be a lateral move to a club you like the look of and enjoy playing. Nothing wrong with that.

Contemplating throwing my irons and wedges on BTS and going after these bad boys 4-AW with a 2 UDI.

Haven't been playing poorly with my AP2s, but they're nowhere as forgiving as these things are. My irons are the weakest part of my game, the more help the better. Might go with something a bit lighter in the shaft as well. Just scared of ballooning these.

Shot 77 yesterday but easily could have been lower. 3 or 4 iron shots landing short because slightly out of the heel or toe.

That is exactly my problem. I am still having a little trouble adjusting. They just go high and straight and long.

Look and feel are just trimmings. Stay with what performs the best for you. In the past I've done the opposite and regretted it more times than not.

I think if you're biggest struggle is irons it's worth looking into with a proper fitting. Any fitter worth going to will look at your current as well as what you want/test out and tell you if it's worth upgrading. They're not going to deny you if you REALLY want to give them your money, but they'll give you an honest opinion on if it's worth your money. I'm a high capper and getting fit for the right shaft helped my general ball flight but I still went right more often than I'd like. Adding these heads had me stripping them with very few "bad" misses left or right.

My fitting opened my eyes big time to how open people should be to all clubs, not just specific brands/models/looks...though I will say that the look at address is big on the mental side of things. I just can't hit an iron with a super chunky top line. As an example: I hit the M3 better than the M4 even though, in theory, it should be the reverse as a high capper.

This is essentially what I'm doing. My set of P790s will be delivered tomorrow. If l like the long irons, I'll get a UDI as well.

Anyone know where it's possible to test a UDI without getting a fitting? I'm not sure I've ever seen one in stores (certainly not Dick's, but even at my golf specific store). I'd like to see if I like the UDI as I have a good feeling it'll outshine my current hybrid in distance...just a matter of if I can hit it consistently.

Best bet would be PGA Superstore I believe.
