Taylormade P790 Irons

Looking for an honest opinion.. I've been using the M2 for the past 2 years. I'm still a high handicapper who is slowing improving. I really like the look/feel of these clubs. Think it's worth it considering my handicap is still so high? I know they're targeted at better players but I really want some.

I had M2s and went for MP18SC MIZUNO. IMO these are helping me to better feel my shots and to improve my hits.

The m2 are wonderful and crazy lofted ... they go looong.

But the mizuno are constant distances.

What I mean is that a players iron can help you improve your game if you are really interested in it; with practice and some lessons you can gain lots.

M2s are so long and forgiving that had my senses numb. Just hit it and that's it.

Plus the feeeling of a good hit, with a forged iron, is addictive!

I got the P-790s and are pretty forgiving. If you try them, one problem would be that you may start to force your swing trying to hit same distance as with m2’s. Don’t!!!

Remember they are less lofted.

I recommend you buy just one iron, maybe 6 iron and play it for a while before you get the full set. Keep your m2 meanwhile

Contemplating throwing my irons and wedges on BTS and going after these bad boys 4-AW with a 2 UDI.

Haven't been playing poorly with my AP2s, but they're nowhere as forgiving as these things are. My irons are the weakest part of my game, the more help the better. Might go with something a bit lighter in the shaft as well. Just scared of ballooning these.

Shot 77 yesterday but easily could have been lower. 3 or 4 iron shots landing short because slightly out of the heel or toe.

Decisions, decisions...

Just do it:)

Pulled the trigger on a set of 4-Aw S300 DG105. I found myself only using my 54 and 58 around the green. The 46 and 50 were mainly used for full shots. I’d rather have the forgiveness.

My buddy just broke 80 for the first time ever with me today. Shot 78 with his new 790s. High, straight and long iron shots were a contributing factor!!!

Regarding the timeline of the order process, here's what I experienced:

Set: 4-PW (minus the 7 iron as I already had one), DG X100 shafts

Ordered - 4/13 (was indicated that the earliest availability date would be 4/22)

Build - 4/25 (I called for an update on 4/23 and the guy told me the build was scheduled to begin on 4/25 with an expected delivery date of 5/2)

Shipped - 4/30 (and delivered on 5/2 like the guy said)

Day 137 update: I still love these irons

even when i play poorly my GIR is up approximately 1.5 per round vs last year. Good rounds I'm getting closer to 3+ more GIR's.

Can Anybody compare the 3i to the UDI? Even though I can't play the UDI b/c I'm lefty... I've heard the UDI is pretty much just a regular 3i but 2* stronger. Website lists a little bit less offset, but are the blade length and thickness the same?? I'm considering ordering the 3i to replace my U65. I've never been able to hit a 4i until now... this thing is pretty easy to hit and pretty forgiving. I assume the 3i shouldn't be an issue either than, especially since I'd mostly hit it off the tee.

Ball speed is the second number I assume. 1mph is approx 2 yards. So the gaps look almost correct using that calculation. If the third number is smash then you have a contact on the face issue that is affecting the 5 iron - great smash number, but poor ball speed result from swing speed

Define "lofts are correct". They may be right on paper but that doesn't mean that they're right for you. I can't find the specific numbers right now but even if you look at Hogan's personal set of irons, you won't find consistent loft gaps between them (on paper) despite Ben having very consistent and precise distance gaps between clubs.

Based on those raw numbers, I'd make the following adjustments and retest. I'm assuming, of course, that you posted an average over a number of shots using quality golf balls and trustworthy launch monitor. Anyway...

5 iron, let's leave this as is and use it as the basis for the rest of the set

6 iron, +1' targeting a final distance of 183-184 (this will give you a more "traditional" 4' loft gap 5-6 too, interesting)

7 iron, my 7 always seems to be a little hot too, not sure why but... this should really be in the 171-172 neighborhood, go +2.5'

8 iron, with a 7 flying 171-172, an 8 at 160 is fine maybe +0.25 to drop that number just a shade under 160?

9 iron, assuming 159 for your 8, 147 is a good target here, -2.0 should get you close, maybe -2.25

PW, target 135 here, go -1.0'

Here is where we may deviate a bit from your standard set but it really comes down to feel. Ideally, I'd like to have 1 more "full swing" club netting 122-123 you could go -2.0' in your existing wedge and/or find another one that will the gap and go +2.0' in this one to give you a number closer to 110. If this is a set matched AW, I'd go -2.0' to achieve the 122-123 then add a SW that comes in around 110 and, perhaps, a LW for speciality shots.

Assuming that you're playing stock lofts now, my adjustments would yield something more like this;

5 iron - 23.5'

6 iron - 27.5'

7 iron - 33'

8 iron - 35.25'

9 iron - 38'

PW - 44'

AW - 48'

Don't get hung up on the actual numbers, adjust for the delta in loft +/-. There is a good chance that your irons aren't really 100% on spec right now. Getting good, consistent, measurements is a bit of an art form so it's easy to deviate a degree here an there. Stack a few of those tolerances and you can easily end up with loft gaps between clubs of 2-6'. What ultimately matters at the end of the day is how your yardages gap out. Adjust for that and don't worry about anything else. Your irons are likely pretty close to stock lofts right now but I wouldn't be surprised if a couple of your clubs weren't a little off just looking at the numbers.

Another factor to consider is quality of strike, you may have to may have to make adjustments again later in the year as you get your swing grooved a little more.

It sure seems like some have to go through waaaay too much adjusting to get gaps set with these irons, what a PITA.

I am sure they are fine the way they come for some, but have never read about so many changes to new irons to get gapping correct.

I have only tested a few but would hate going through all of this. I like the clubs, have done a demo on a few irons, but not hit the whole set.

This thread is an interesting read.

... I measured my new set of P790's that I purchased on eBay. Maybe as close to spec for a stock set as I have ever measured. First # is the proper spec and the 2nd is the measured spec. I consider 1/2* in loft or lie to be virtually statistically insignificant. If measured on a different loft lie machine 1/2* difference could easily be different. Mine is a Mitchell Tour. Only 1* difference on the loft of the 8 and the lie on the 4. So the only real gap would be the 4* between the 8 and 9 and the 6* between the 8 and 7 which could definitely be a problem. But having measured many sets of new irons I am amazed at how close to spec these are.

thanks so much. yes to your questions, this was on a trackman, using a bunch of hits for each club. if i intend to keep this, i need to get past these gap and loft issues, its in my head.

i dont want to go back to a game improvement club, and i do hit these 790s well. unfortunately any other set of irons in this category will likely come w similar issues (correct me if i am wrong). anything more than 790s, like 770s for example, are unlikely forgiving enough for me.

any other options are welcomed! thanks a lot for your help.

I wasn’t a fan of the irons for my game but am bagging the 3 iron with standard dgs300. Using this instead of my hybrid. I considered the udi but didn’t feel 17 degrees with steel shaft would be ideal for my game.

Yeah, as a high spin player, the long irons are bananas long for me. I've always hit my five wood very high, but haven't really cared because I'm quite accurate with it and it's fit in the gaps in my bag fine, but today I hit a few direct comparisons between my four iron and five wood into the wind and I actually hit all of my four irons further. :-0

Think I'm going to have to bench my five wood and look for a lower launching/spinning hybrid to take that spot. I'm really loving these irons! They are the first irons I've ever played that make a real difference on the course for me.
