I'm sure this has been discussed before, but what designates a ball from a manufacture being labeled as practice or being put into retail boxes?

Probably so a pro doesn't accidentally use a range ball instead of a new ball for actual play.

The "practice" ProV's that sometimes popup at Dicks/GG are 99% identical to retail boxes, but weren't up to Titleist final QC, so they get the "practice" stamp. You'd have to be a seriously crazy good pro with Tiger like equipment standards to tell any difference. Not sure about these particular Muirfield balls, but if I needed 5dz, this is the only deal I'd look at.

While I don't doubt that ProV's that fail qc get the practice stamp, I find it hard to believe that those are the only or even a majority of the practice balls. They are always available and there is a consistent consumer and club market for them. They probably just designate a portion of the balls produced to be labeled as practice balls and throw in the ones with minor imperfections.

If there is a certain percentage that don’t make it through QC and could essentially be a few people checking to see minor color or dimple imperfections it is entirely possible that 1% of total golf balls don’t pass QC. Then those “practice” balls are shipped and packaged. 1% would still be more than enough to satisfy practice ball customers.

I was told that if they fail QC (meaning either cosmetic imperfection, or core/mantle/internal construction not perfect under Xray) and then they get the practice stamp. Even 1% or less of the total ProV output is thousands and thousands of balls. More than enough for this small market and a year's worth of every tour's practice sessions.

I'd like to amend my review for the better - My 8 dozen Srixon Z-Star XV's are all the most current model and not one of them looks to be hit. I wish I had gotten 12 dozen of these!

How do you differentiate different versions of zstar?

Left to right, older to current model. I may be missing one between the oldest and second oldest but I'm not sure. Either way it's a general progression of the XV models.

Can someone post pictures of the Srixon balls?

Here are my XV's. As I mentioned above, all most current model, seemingly unhit, and all are #1's.

Let the sh*t show with lost balls start. I placed an order Monday before 10am for 10 dz bridgestone balls. Order confirmation, and a tracking number arrived shortly after. I was very excited about this, was starting to praise them. On Friday I actually look at the tracking number to see when to expect delivery. The tracking number provided has not moved or been scanned into the fedex system. So I email customer service Friday to check the status of my order. Well I just received an email saying they are sorry for the mixup but they accepted more orders than balls. I did receive a refund, but would rather the balls ordered. Hope this doesn't happen to others. This is my 2nd year ordering the murfield practice balls.

I received my 10 dozen Srixons today and will say about 15-20% of mine have slight scuff marks, but nearly all will still be playable. After a quick glance, it looks like all but 2 of mine are latest version of XV model, the 2 odd balls are plain z-stars and have more significant scuffing.

Depending on your ball of choice, there are tons of ~$10 dozen slightly hit urethane/premium ball deals going on right now. Golfballsdirect now changed to 25% off and free shipping +$75. That golfballnut site has great deals too.

But the only ball I will justify spending money on is that Srixon Z Star special edition Kelly Green/ St. Patrick's Day ball. Did you guys see those? Some on ebay for ~$25/dz. They have a green tint to them. Really cool looking ball. Hopefully those start popping up on the used sites soon.

Green tint on green grass?

Just the lettering. The ball has a pearl finish.
