Scotty Cameron Newport -- Tiger Woods 1997 Putter

And no... sports memorabilia is not something I do to make a living... I own an oil brokerage company and do just fine... this sort of thing is just fun for me. Do I at times make money on items I invest in? Yes ... are there times when I just buy things I like? Yes...

I think 90% of the fun of this whole deal was trying to figure out what the putter was, when it was used and by whom for sure. If I make money along the way, great... if not, no big deal. At least I have a really cool putter that is unique and special!

That’s why I came on this board in the first place... to figure out “the story” which I did ... thanks to all those that have helped, I genuinely appreciate it.

Haters will always hate. Don’t let it bother you, you have a heck of a gem on your hands!

Should've held onto that putter after this past weekend I bet its worth a little more now ;). My hats off to Brooks he played so awesome golf but I'm I the only one who was wishing he would stumble a little on the last few holes and get into a playoff with Tiger? Just curious, nothing against Brooks I think he is a great, humble and deserving champion but it just would have been pretty special to see Tiger hoist the Wanamaker again.

I might be open to it down the road

I guess that road wasn’t too long.

I see where some people are coming from . Cool story to tell. Would have been better just to come out and say you’d be flipping it instead of trying to be coy.

Good luck in the auction.... I’m sure the Andre reed foundation will be excited about the donation they’ll be getting

Honest question. How much do ya actually get from the sale after the auction house has taken their cut of things?

It was your putter, so I'm glad you got to figure out what you actually wanted to do with it.

Must have been cool to have it in your possession at least for a little bit.

Ah c'mon Justin. You pimped your putter here and you know it. You can see it in your post if you go back and read them.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that. It still made for a good story!

Congrats!

I don’t know. Seems likely me a pretty d-bag move on the OP’s part to lie and act like he didn’t know what he had.

Just be honest. I mean it’s a legit Tiger Woods Cameron used in competition. It’s going to get some hype based on that alone. Especially here!

Oh boy, here we go again bogeypro... mr keyboard gangster... STFU , I haven't disappeared, I just choose to ignore slapstick's like you.

I've been on this board for 10 years longer than you and have learned to recognize the big money collectors pretty quickly. Like I said, I'm proud of your success and wish I could afford to buy the expensive collector pieces. I really don't get why I've ruffled your feathers so much. Good luck in the future - I really do mean that. I look to forward to seeing what other cool collectors items you come across.

Scotty1140... dude... yes when I bought the putter I thought it could have been tournament used, but I didn’t know for sure. When I posted the thread initially, I still hadn’t even sent the putter in to be authenticated... look at the date on the COA???? It’s pretty silly to call me a d-bag alleging I “lied” and “knew what I had”... seriously?

I didn’t even know for sure it was legit until I got the COA. After that, I searched through video and photos to find where he used it. I sure as heck never lied and made up a story to pimp this putter while knowing what I had. Did I talk it up after I confirmed things... I guess one could come to that conclusion, but it genuinely wasn’t intentionally meant to hype the putter to raise the price... notice once the auction started, I didn’t say anything about it or try to hype it at all.

Fair enough. Unnecessary post on my part.

Justin, the putter came with a LOA (letter of authenticity) from a respected athlete and known friend of Tigers. Why would someone like Andre Reed lie about where he got the putter and who's putter it was, especially when he and Tiger are friends.

It would have been a different story if you had purchased the putter on eBay and had just taken the word of it's history from some random seller. That definitely would have been a stab in the dark!

Sending it in to Scotty for a COA was a no-brainer. I wish Scotty would have given you a little more information on the COA as far as it being gamed by Tigers and used on a win. That would have been nice, but I'm not sure I've ever seen that on a COA from them. But kudos to you for finding the putter pics of it being used by Tiger. That was some good research on your part, and I'm sure that is what you initially came here (and TCC) for. Research.

Not a thing wrong with that.

But c'mon, after that you were definitely doing some pimpin'.

Again, nothing wrong with that. Happens here quite often when someone gets ahold of a new stick that they're pretty sure they aren't going to keep.

Some of your posts regarding it's (perceived) value:

"I took a flyer thinking it could be real and it turned out it was." (I'm not sure it was a "flyer" since it was on auction and had a LOA, but it was still a bit of a risk).

".....you can do the math, but it's a pretty big number."

"It's a moon shot I think guessing value".

"You can't insure it for enough."

"Clearly it is worth A LOT more now."

"My guess......it's worth 5-10x's what his last non-tournament used, backup putter sold for." (For the record, that would have been in the 250K - 450K range, which was pretty optimistic.)

"This is the earliest known Tiger Woods putter in private hands that was tournament used." (For the record, that's not true, but it IS a rare putter for sure).

"Bottom line, super rare and special items can be worth a lot!!". (That IS true, and you made a nice profit for sure).

BTW...........did you make good on your word and send a portion to charity? Who was the lucky winner...........The Tiger Woods Foundation or Andre Reed's Foundation.......or both?

Tmac... all fair points. Except, I would say that a letter from Reed is valuable, but it didn’t really prove “tournament use”. The photos/videos are what put the putter in his hands.... anyway...

I plan to (when I get the check from green jacket) donate a large portion of the proceeds to my local First Tee Organization. That has not happened yet, but will. I wanted to donate money to Andre Reed and/or Tiger Foundation, but oddly, The Tiger Woods Foundation never even responded to me when I inquired and the Andre Reed Foundation guy tried to be helpful, but ultimately weren’t willing to provide any new information than they already gave. Hence, I’ll just donate money to a local charity instead where the money means more.

All good, thanks for the post and the follow up.

Classy response Justin.

And I agree, the LOA definitely wasn't a recognition of the putter actually being used by Tiger in a tournament - especially in a win. I'm not sure how many backups of the TeI3 putters Scotty made or Tiger had back then (it's nothing like the number of backups many top players have today) so I would have assumed this putter was used by Tiger had I been bidding on the original auction, but your research is what "sold" the putter in YOUR auction. Just like your research for the baseball bat that you own (which is another very cool piece BTW) has increased it's value.

Kudos to you for picking a fine charity. Sad about the response(s) you got back from Tiger's foundation (or lack of response) as well as Andre Reeds. However, the First Tee Organization is a worthy cause and seems to be a very well run organization that does fine work. Bravo sir.

Hey, if you run across any other unique golf clubs in your future searching, I hope you come here again looking for information and to share the story.

Nothing wrong with a little pimpin' either. I would have pimped the hell out of that Tiger putter had I won it. ;)

All good indeed.
