The Open @ Carnoustie (NO POLITICS)

Was in Carnoustie this afternoon - security is in place for the course so couldnt get a look around but I can report it was 26 celsius with a warm 20mph wind off the west. Fairways will be baking.

Already are extremely firm and fast. One of my players hit 4 drivers over 400 today, a 4 iron 310 and a 5 iron 302.

Do you think they will water greens during the Open?

Probably. They probably won’t get them much faster than they played today, which was 2-2.5’ faster than at the Scottish Open. It’s playing very very fair.

Which Open? Oh, you mean the British Open! Nice pics. Thanks.

You're going to be rightly confused next year so when it is being held outside Britain.

He'll call it the Irish Open. ;)

You all are ignorant. The British can still apply to Northern Ireland where the British Open will be played. Teeheeheehee

The people of Northern Ireland consider themselves British or both British and north Irish. Bermuda and Canada , I don’t think they do. The real question may come up though if Scotland removes themselves from the U.K. or North Ireland does it. Both could possibly happen because of Brexit. Saw a report Gerry Adams’ house was bombed and it might be his old IRA friends who did it. IRA supports the EU.

Other than that hack Lawrie, course seems to favor the best player of that time, over several eras.

The Open Championship

2007 – Padraig Harrington.

1999 – Paul Lawrie.

1975 – Tom Watson.

1968 – Gary Player.

1953 – Ben Hogan.

1937 – Henry Cotton.

1931 – Tommy Armour.

Are you serious? Calling him a hack?

Hes won 8 times in Europe

2 Ryder Cups

And i happen to know him personally!

Lawrie was certainly no hack, a very solid euro tour player, not well known in the US because he didn’t play here much. However the cream didn’t exactly rise to the top that year with JVV almost winning. Justin Leonard was in the playoff as well.

The course was set up so difficult that year that a lot of luck was involved and pure skill wasn’t rewarded. JVV was playing out of his mind n some sort of sublime state, for 71 holes, but then the magnitude of the situation smacked him in the face on the 72nd tee.

The only thing that smacked him in the face was the grandstand pole.

I truly believe that if it had been a top 10 player the narrative would be totally different. Everyone would be agreeing it was the worst break in major history.

The people of Northern Ireland can consider themselves British, but that doesnt make where they are living part of Britain. Britain is the name of the island that England, Scotland and Wales is on.

And given the source of the hundreds of petrol bombs being thrown and shots fired at police across Northern Ireland over the last week, I think you need to look at the other side for the source of the Gerry Adams attack.

John Daly out due to his knee injury. His withdrawal puts Keegan Bradley into the field.

Still waiting on Bryson DeChambeau and Henrik Stenson's injury situations.

Adrian Otaegui of Spain is the next alternate to get in.

A second WD would put Aaron Wise in the field.

The only other alternate named by the R&A so far is JB Holmes.

TW talkin traj, yo.

"I have missed not playing The Open in a while because this is our oldest tournament," Woods said. "And then coming here to Carnoustie, it is special. This is my fourth time playing it as a tournament. From my first time coming here as an amateur to being back now, it's just amazing how this course doesn't change. It is right in front of you. It's hard. It's probably the most difficult one we play in the whole rotation."

If Sunday's small sample size is an indication, he won't be needing the driver much this week. He hit just one on the first hole, and that was only after first hitting a 2-iron off the tee.

The course is already rife with examples of players finding the ball going extraordinary distances, whether it be due to the wind or the firm and fast conditions. For example, Woods hit a 7-iron off the No. 4 tee to position himself short of bunkers; it went 215 yards. His normal distance with that club is 180.

"Right now the fairways are faster than the greens," he said. "I am sure they will probably speed the greens up a touch, but I'm sure this will be one of those weeks where the fairways are a little quicker than the greens."

As for adjusting to the links style of play and learning how far to hit shots on each hole, Woods said: "It is mainly trajectory. You can get the same numbers [yardages] with different trajectories. That's what is going to be important, how hot you want the ball coming into the fairways. You can really make the ball roll 60, 70, 80 yards. Is it really worth it or not? Some of the holes, can you carry bunkers? It is a risk/reward golf course, and the way it is set up right now, it is going to play very narrow because it is so fast."

I am placing money on Fleetwood and Rose so there is no chance they will win. Money is coming in late on Tiger, down to 16-1 opened at 25-1.

The last three opens have been a total blast, great tournaments. Here’s hoping this will be 4 in a row

I'd agree with all except for last years. I know I'm gonna take flack for this, but the whole ordeal with Jordan slicing it and then taking an unplayable, then getting to drop the ball on the range onto a perfect lie, felt similar to how it feels when football teams win by kneeling the ball to run out the clock.

A win is a win, not arguing against that. But that whole ordeal took such a long time Kuchar would have needed a trip to the range to get warmed up.

On a links course you can often get a drop in the fairway/perfect lie when taking an unplayable. It’s using the rules to your advantage. And he won because of what he did after taking the drop. He definitely didn’t drop to a knee, he did the opposite and played aggressively and got rewarded coming down the stretch
