Harrington hit a drive into the burn during a practice round...it was 459 yards from the tee. Another player hit a 3-wood off the tee and got 109 yards of roll.

Since the rough is a bit whispy, a player could take driver on almost every hole...the problem would be finding a pot bunker. You could hit a 400+ yard drive, be 50 yards from the green, and walk away with a six if you find a pot bunker.

I will be curious to see what the strategy will be...mid-irons off the tee, or driver?

Another year of crowning the "Champion Golfer of the Year" by playing a game that isn't played any other week of the year.

I guess the firm and fast playing conditions of the Irish and Scottish Opens the last two weeks on the ET didn't take place.

Scottish Open wasn’t even close. Irish Open was quite firm. But this week is a good bit firmer than Irish Open.

R&A please get your OB's straight this time...

I know many courses where the range is bounce

Intentionally or they just forgot?

Intentionally. Particular holes are right next to the range and it would mean penalize a shot that missed the fairway by 10-15 yards.

Molinari for the win just to see Italian newspapers giving zero space to the news on their frontpage on Monday! :D

Somehow I got a feeling Fleetwood will take this one or if not, it would be Noren.

Still rooting for Rickie though

been saying for the last few weeks -- fleetwood and rose look pretty good for this tourney. if molinari hits it as straight as he has, he's got a chance too -- he's fire as of late.

The legend that is Matt Wallace who got us inside the ropes!

Is everyone wearing golf spikes to walk around as a spectator?!

It's a very popular thing to do.

I prefer well-cushioned runners. They're more comfortable to be standing and walking in for a long number of hours.

And I don't need any spikes or nubs for just walking around. I'm (very) unlikely to be taking a swing during pro tourney...

There was a thread on here some time back debating the merits of wearing golf shoes at a tournament. The consensus (among the predominantly American respondents) leant towards the wearing of golf shoes as being somewhat pretentious. Wearing golf shoes? That's for those inside the ropes.

It's wrong to generalise but over here I think the thinking is based on pragmatism rather than fashion, or what the other fool thinks.

I have a pair of shoes, they are waterproof, they are designed to aid traction, they are designed for the environment that I am currently in ........................wear them.

I will wear mine at Carnoustie on Saturday.

We did, we all had trainers but when we arrived yesterday morning it was raining and had been raining quite heavily before that so we went with golf shoes to try and keep dry. Turned out that we only had some light rain for half an hour and then it was dry after that but we left the park and ride at 8.45am and were at the course for nearly 11 hours so didn't fancy taking the risk of walking around with soaking wet feet for all of that time.

One of the things I like about this venue is it is going to require the golfer to think his way around the course. To me that is as important as putting a good swing on the ball.

Is "Hogan's Alley" still as mystical today as it was back in the 50's?

I watched a segment on Golf Channel last night, and they said what Hogan did then was the equivalent of a 310 yard carry today. So yeah, I would say it still retains is mysticism.

So narrow! It actually seems to get narrower the closer that you get to it.

So the guys today can't carry the bunkers on the right? I guess I'm trying to understand what the play is going to be this week: either take a line into the ally or lay up short of the bunkers??

Seems so. If there is some wind at their backs, I suppose some players can attempt to carry it, but if you end up in one of those pot bunkers, bogey would be a great score.

Sounds like some are going to attack it with driver - McIlroy, Rahm and Koepka have all said as much. Tiger and others are going to take a more defensive approach. Harrington said they are hitting 8 irons off the second tee to stay well short of the bunkers at 240 off the tee!

Hearing a few of them talking yesterday, the consensus seemed to be, into the wind at the bunkers with a club short enough so that it won't roll into the bunkers. Down the wind take them over the top of them. No wind...who knows?!

That is one of the things I love about this game...a player really needs to think about what he wants to do. In many cases it's just not getting a yardage and grabbing a club. This hole is a testament of that. :-)

Harrington said that from the 18th tee, down the wind, he drove it into the Barry Burn short of the green.

It’s nearly a year and somewhere deep down I still can’t get past this photo....

I still feel bad for Kuch...

I'm still ticked at Kuch for giving Spieth the fist bump and smile like it was all good after waiting 20 minutes for the range drop. Way too friendly. Get mad, get fired up, just like Spieth did and flattened him.

By the way, going to go out on a limb. Winner at Carnoustie this week goes -14. Unless of course the weather gets super nasty, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen and these guys are just too good to not be able to handle a firm/fast course with ideal green speed.
