if anything I think Jordan Spieth will look back and see how he blew it. That 3w in the rough in the front 9 par5 seal his fate. He should have noticed the early score and played boring golf. He actually made a lot of dumb decision that compounded in the front 9 and got a bit too aggressive when he didn't need to. I bet the next time he has a lead like that under the same conditions he won't be making those questionable moves.

 

I don't care what the stats about his driving say, he's way too crooked off the tee to ever play boring golf. I think it was his second round, maybe #10 and 11 or 11 and 12 (?).....anyway I watched him hit one drive that was a massive duck hook 40 yards left, next hole was a massive block 40 yards right.....birdied them both. He just doesn't have that Faldo 18 straight pars round in him, and that obviously would've won it for him this year.

 

Like that 3w you mentioned. Had to drive it crooked to be in that position to begin with.

The only reason anyone is calling FM boring is because he was going up against "their guy" (TW, JS, Rory, JR, XS, etc...). Put a swoosh on FM's shirt and all of the sudden he's not boring, he's clutch, he's making every short putt, he's putting his irons in the right place, he's steady, he's cerebal, etc... FM is "boring" because his fan base is nothing compared to the other guys. Good thing FM hasn't spit in a cup in his past life or he would be the villain!

 

Had TW played those same exact shots and putts that FM did, the sporting world would be going nuts right now. We would all be talking about was an awesome display of control. Put a red shirt and a swoosh on FM and suddenly the story is how the wind was gusting to 40 mph and the birdie on 18 was one of the best holes ever in Open Championship golf. CNBC would stop talking about the market to talk Tiger's comeback story.

 

FM played so good yesterday I don't recall him having a single "stressful" shot other than maybe the 2nd shot on 17 because it was a long way from the hole, but he nailed that 2 iron. Did he have a tough chip/pitch all day?

 

Boring? Not even close. Clinical? Absolutely.

The reason he's boring is because that long iron he hit was around 215 or so with a touch of run. A 5 iron for most.

 

You can do anything you want. But a 5ft 4 Italian with no smile isn't going to be anything but boring. And I admire the guy and have watched him for years in European play.

 

He hits it so straight because he's short armed , upright and doesn't hit it extremely far. Like Corey Pavin. Nothing exciting there. All that said the right guy won. Just wasn't exciting. See. I'm being converted on the ball roll back theory. Funny how several already on the anti rollback Side disagrees with my take here. Hmmm

Molinari has increased his driving distance by 10 yards this year, averaging 301 yards off the tee without losing accuracy, ranked 52nd in distance, longer than Spieth, Fowler, Phil and Reed. The extra 10 yards has taken him from a top 50 player to a top 10 player and the fact that he's got short arms makes his distance even more impressive. The two iron on 17 was straight into the teeth of the wind, nobody was hitting 5 iron in. Tiger hit 3 iron and finished way short.

I normally rail against modern game of smash and wedge. Am good with a ball roll back etc.

 

Now that a guy wins playing the game similar to what I mention preferring to watch , and not bomb and gauge , I mentioned that it was less exciting to watch . And am now thebad guy too. Lol. Funny being the bad guy on both sides of the fence. What does that tell us ? Tells me that it's osnt a 90/10 split in favor of bomb and gauge as that faction would let us believe.

This thread is 138 pages longer than the Barbasol thread. Aside from Greg Norman in the Masters loss to Sir Nick, I think the choke term is thrown around pretty carelessly in golf. Every loss is not automatically a choke.
