a good test of golf today for the best in the world....cut the whining

Two different courses today. Mike Davis admitted it and the scores confirm it.

Brooks Koepka shot a 72. Justin Rose a 73. Even under the most brutal conditions, these are the scores which are possible.

The guys who keep their heads and execute with amazing precision can shoot these scores. The ones who can't can always whine, moan and complain.

Out of the whole year it is probably just 1 week usually the US Open where the players have to endure these brutal conditions.

They need to suck it up and be happy with their millions of dollars.

I've never been a big fan of DJ, but he earned a ton of respect from me today for not bitchin' and moanin' about the course. I'm rooting for him tomorrow.

DJ showed the heart of a champion today. I think he wins tomorrow.

USGA will overcorrect and make the course too soft. A host of guys could win it tomorrow.

They cant get it "too soft". It's already too far gone for that.

They seem to be operating at extremes. Just sayin'.

I have no doubt the USGA will apply a liberal dousing of water on each green tonight. Tomorrow this course will be noticeably more receptive and we'll see better scoring unless it becomes windy.

You don't think a liberal dousing tonight to make it more receptive, added with the afternoon sun tomorrow, might make the poa grow just a tad too much by the time the leaders reach the back 9?

Stimps back then weren't even close to today.

Neither was the equipment. Just as courses have been lengthened, greens have increased pace.

A ball still rolls the same on greens. Putter technology driven a need to change greens.

Balls didn't spin as much, in part because the clubs didn't have the same grooves. nor did the balls land with the same steep "stop and drop" trajectory of the modern ball.

This is a US Open, last year Erin Hills was clown golf

What was clownish about it? It was too easy but the course was designed to be toughened up by mother nature, when she doesn't do her part the course was too easy but that is what happens when you play on that style of course.

Oh they could . Mud balls on the green if you use enough water. Cause they sure don’t have any grass left.

It may or may not, but we probably will not see guys rolling their putts off the greens. :)

USGA should just go all in at this point and punch the greens overnight.

Just around the edges.

That should be a Sunday tradition at the US Open.

That’s what I don’t understand. What do you expect once you kill the grass? Maybe the USGA needs to look into graduated greens like the rough. Roll them 5 times or something. Add a nice collar on the green. But you need grass! It’s not a green without grass.

I remember that one US Open back in the late 90's where some driving range proprietor by the name of Roy McAvoy (who only needed birdie to win and par for a playoff) couldn't keep a three wood from backing up into the pond on 18. Now THAT was a brutal setup. If only he could have been fast enough to sprint up to the green and rake the ball into the hole before meeting it's watery demise, he would have taken down Peter Jacobson on Monday's playoff. Romeo would have become the next Stevie Williams and all would have been right with the game of golf.
