Anyone else notice how wrinkly Jordan's shirt is? Looks like the guy slept in the friggin thing. LOL

Saw that as well. He probably slept in it last night.

No. Multiple players and organizations esp. Tiger plan and coordinate major championship clothing by day many months in advance.

That 11th green is brutal...

#11 par3 159yds always historically has been smallest green & demanding.

which greens are more severe? oakmont or shinnecock? I honestly don't think it's that bad.

Oakmont is pretty much the only us course that always has greens @12 stimp in normal conditions. Winged Foot is pretty close tho'.

Shinny is fast but not that fast normally.

For a links course, there are an awful lot of balls that land short of the green and then stay there. Aren't you supposed to play the ball along the ground?

Its really hard to play ground game on multiple elevated greens and most w/ mid calf to mid-thigh fescue around green apron and multiple bunkers to repel inc. a redan hole.

To you guys watching, what are the big challenges here?

Is it the greens only or other factors?

wind 17-28mph, unhittable mid-thigh fescue 2nd/3rd cut and thick 1st cut, steep elevated/ contoured greens w/ false fronts and rolloffs to collection areas.

Double digit cut line?

They did away with the 10 shot rule right? So I'm thinking no because the winds are supposed to calm down a bit tomorrow. I think it's top 60 and ties... Im guessing something around +6 will be the cut line

correct.

It was +10 then vascillated down to +6 and up to +9 before settling @ +8.

I’m fine with the course setup and the way it played this week. This tournament is all about toughness. When a player finishes a round in the US Open they should be ecstatic to shoot a round of even par. Today golf is made to easy and many pros are spoiled into thinking they can shoot at every pin and birdie every hole. Most weeks this is the case but not this week. Last years US Open was a joke. This US Open is still different as the challenge is not so much in hitting the fairways as it is leaving yourself with putts on the proper side of the cup giving the player a good chance at par and an outside chance at birdie. My fear is the USGA will crumble in the final round and set up the course extremely easy to make up for the way the course played Saturday. My feeling is DJ or Rose come out of this with the win and if that is the case I think this course identified the proper champion.

I mean, what can they do to save the greens for today? Realistically, they're going to be just as bad this afternoon as they were yesterday. It almost would have been a better gameplay to shoot +10 so you could go off earlier and post a score like Berger and Finau. Feel like the winner is gonna post a good score early and watch for a few hours as everyone comes in.

What it probably will take for true change is for a prominent American golfer to refuse to play because of these ridiculous setups.

lol, would love the usga to DQ the idiot who refuses to tee it up because the course is too hard.

No, I'm talking about a respected American golfer WD and saying why.

All these golfers expect tough tests. But there's a difference between a tough test and an unplayable course.

Chambers Bay was a disaster. Erin Hills didn't get away thanks to daily heavy rains all week. Shinnecock is a disaster...again.

You cant mutilate these classic courses...they were designed and built for a certain generation of golf. Dress it up a bit, but leave the course dignity intact. The USGA mucks it up every time when mother nature doesnt intervene with rain. Shinnecock isn't playable with greens that the USGA "wants" to have.

This is the only major that has this problem...you don't see Augusta lose its course. Or the Open Championship. Or the PGA of America. Its ALWAYS the USGA. ALWAYS.

Man, I thought Chambers Bay was awesome. Seems like we are looking for totally different things. It would be interesting to watch a round together for the different perspective on what makes a great major.

Did you not see the sh$t grass all over the greens at Chambers?? How was that awesome?

And to be frank, Shinnecock appears to have an infestation of poa as well.

They should just stick all the pins in their easiest positions today and let them play golf. Even syringe the greens if necessary to keep the conditions as playable as possible given they have virtually lost some of the greens already.

The course is tricked up enough in places like the green on 7 which should have been dug up by Crenshaw. Learn from yesterday and try to turn it back into a major golf event

i think it was more questionable pin positions on a few holes...tbey should of took into account what would of happened if they lost a few greens.

I don't understand why the USGA has to take the course to the edge of disaster.

Why not just make a very hard but fair set up and let the guys play.

These guys are amazing golfers and the one who plays best should be rewarded not the luckiest.

Because they are (in their own minds) Masters of the Universe and can control nature and dictate exactly how the best players in the world play every shot. USGA want the world to marvel at their course setup skills which get equal billing alongside the players.

No matter how ,many times they end up looking like total idiots, they’ll be back next year rolling the dice with the greens and the weather. They exist in such a bubble that nothing can puncture their illusory sense of control.

The Masters is the perfect example of what a major should be. Challenging, but still get-able on Sunday afternoon if you need to make a run.

Every year we are forced to watch the USGA get in it's own way setting up this tournament.

But that's the Masters....the U.S. Open has an affinity to old man par...the course was unfair in spots but the grind like Rose did exemplifies was is possible......back 9 charges are not what this event is about. #attrition

Complain all ya want about how ridiculous and unplayable the course is.

It's the same for every guy in the field.

No, it's not. That's the essence of the problem. Berger and Finau played a different course than DJ and the others who finished late.

But other than those two, who else shot under par? One guy ....

Poa gets a lot of hate, but if the entire surface is poa.. it putts great and true. Think Oakmont.

It's a New York US Open.

It needs Sergio.

Good thing there's no water at Shinnecock.

actually 1 hole does.

6th Pond Par4 491yd

Water short of the green.

Fyi, wind is here due to closeness of water on 2 sides.

Will be there Saturday. A couple questions for folks in the know: 1. Should we just eat dinner at the concessions or try to go find a place to eat? 2. Any recommendations on where to watch from, like a particular green or tee box?

Thanks in advance.

Go early. From my memory of living up there years ago, it's 2 lanes in/out and limited parking. Not many "franchises" and lots of momma and poppa's shop. High end though. Better to eat there than looking for a spot around there IMHO.

The place has changed alot and part of it hasn't.

Sunrise is a 4lane highway until 1/2mi from the course. Has rl heavy rush hr traffic -dead stop from 64 to merge into 1 lane past exit 66 North Rd @canal.

2hr shuttle from general/vol parking @airport on w-fri. sat was better but still mobbed.

I don’t understand why the USGA cannot do a better job of controlling the moisture on the greens. It’s extremely easy to instrument every green and to know the exact moisture content of the subsurface. They can/could use that data to front load the greens at the beginning of a day so they don’t become questionable like they did on Saturday afternoon. And yes, I know you can’t 100% predict the weather but you can provide a margin or error in subsurface moisture where conditions don’t get out of balance from morning to afternoon.
