IMO, the course is beautiful and its very compelling and entertaining TV.

There are multiple past major winners and/or world number ones at the top of the leader board. It truly feels like 15 guys have a chance to win. Almost no lead would be safe going into the last few holes. Guys are chipping with hybrids and executing all kinds of interesting shots we hardly ever get to see.

What more can you ask for? Why all the complaints?

Now they'll leave the sprinklers on so long there will be ponds on greens and everyone will leave putts three feet short tomorrow.

just give them a light soaking and let the carnage continue.

A light soaking ?!?!?! :cheesy:

I guess but my line of thinking was this championship is suppose to identify the best golfer not the one that doesn’t get screwed by the course. I doubt there’s a single player in the field that wouldn’t call this ridiculous if they were being honest.

My only problem is I saw a few shots hit the green that were very good shots and should have stayed. Stenson on 18 was not right.

And with current setups I don't think a Corey Pavin type player has a chance.

Let me tell you what Wooderson is packin'

What it probably will take for true change is for a prominent American golfer to refuse to play because of these ridiculous setups.

The world number 1 is tied first after 3 rounds. A plethora of major champions lurking. I’d say they’ve done a pretty good job of finding the best golfers.

The greens are a bit ridiculous, and the fans all need rounding up and machine gunning, but apart from that, it’s a great tournament.

Great tournie, 4 guys tied atop, 23 within 5 shots of lead. Anything can happen, gonna be a great finish

They've lost the course. Keopka is up there saying some of the hole locations today didn't even have grass on them. All of the water in the world cant help that in one night.

Tomorrow will be brutal. Greens will be bumpy and uneven.

Sounds like a true every man event. I play on courses with no grass and bumpy greens regularly..

Let me get this straight ... This tournament is once a year ... And the winners is paid a gazillion dollars ... And it's 4 days, 72 holes ... For our (in the USA) National championship ... And a select few wusses (players and fans) are going to whine and complain EVERY FRICKIN YEAR about it being too hard? Go watch ice skating for a week and come back next week when the winners shooting -21 at the Buttercup Invitational.

I’m sure you play 500 yard par 4s with 5000 square ft greens that have a 100 square ft playable area.

No, I'm talking about a respected American golfer WD and saying why.

All these golfers expect tough tests. But there's a difference between a tough test and an unplayable course.

Chambers Bay was a disaster. Erin Hills didn't get away thanks to daily heavy rains all week. Shinnecock is a disaster...again.

You cant mutilate these classic courses...they were designed and built for a certain generation of golf. Dress it up a bit, but leave the course dignity intact. The USGA mucks it up every time when mother nature doesnt intervene with rain. Shinnecock isn't playable with greens that the USGA "wants" to have.

This is the only major that has this problem...you don't see Augusta lose its course. Or the Open Championship. Or the PGA of America. Its ALWAYS the USGA. ALWAYS.

Wow.. Chamblee is actually 100% correct in what he just said on the GC. Stimp meter has destroyed the game for the classic courses. You cannot run the speeds like this on greens like this.

I’ve posted the same thing here already and on a few other threads.

Pre WW2 greens on classic “difficult” high quality courses were designed with heavily sloping greens and never ever meant to be played so fast. It’s truly stupid. They didn’t have the greenskeeping technology and mowers to even try it. The original designers would be absolutely appalled at what is going on.

They were designed to be difficult at about 8 or 9 on the stimp. And of course there was no stimp meter then.

Anything designed before 1940 should never be played faster than about 10.....and yes....that includes Augusta National, Pinehurst, Oakmont, etc.

All these modern course designers and renovators they hire to work on the old courses always talk about “being true to the intentions of the original design”, but they don’t even listen to themselves when it comes to the greens.
