I'm still alive in a survivor contest out in Vegas so I'm just placing a hedge bet each week. And with the lines at the DC sportsbook, its been quicker for me to drive to CT and get in and out in a few minutes. Its a nice drive actually. Although its normally a few minutes shorter, Route 9 is closed through Hillsboro right now.

Decided to burn my remaining shop credit on a new set of SM8s (54/58/62). It will probably be the first time ever that I've had a matching set of wedges. I've (almost?) always carried 3 wedges other than my set PW/AW but they have always been various brands, shafts, head styles etc. Its had absolutely no negative affect on my game at all but I literally could not find one other thing I needed in the pro shop. I can only buy so many quarter zips and polos in one year.

Random question, kind of a preview of a golf new year's resolution post.  I'm looking to play more amateur tournaments next year, assuming they aren't all cancelled again, but having difficulty finding a good schedule of them aside from the VSGA and MSGA events.  Has anyone played in any in the DMV area that they've liked?  Interested in both individual and team events.  Nothing super serious (not going to make it in the Eastern Amateur, that's for sure), but something with some stakes to get the blood pumping.  I'm creating a spreadsheet of all the events and qualifying dates to try and keep track, and happy to share it with anyone if they're interested as we get closer to registration opening up.  Here's what I have slated to include so far:

 

-USGA events (local qualifiers, assuming those return)

-VSGA events

-MSGA events (schedule doesn't appear to be out yet)

-Maryland Cup (is this still a thing?)

-Classic 5 events (e.g., Baltimore City Amateur Championship)

-Norfolk City Amateur

-University of Maryland tournament series

-Hive events (obviously)

 

Would love to hear of any others, or anyone's thoughts on specific tournaments.

What loft is your PW?  Do you go from PW to the 54 or is there another wedge between your PW and the 54?

Today a buddy and I had plans to play at Links of Gettysburg that didn't happen because of the snow last week. Instead we played at Queenstown Lakes. The wind was howling at times and chilly. Lots of layers and the occasional taste of antifreeze was required to stay warm. The course was soaked with plugged tee shots the norm and mud on every other shot, we did play LCP. The greens were in outstanding shape given the season and had recently been top dressed with what looked like the finest grain sand I had ever seen. Rolled true and fairly fast. I hit a worm burner on 14 that skipped off of a little knoll and hit a goose in the body but did no harm. The rest of the flock, maybe 20 total, really gave me grieve as I walked up to hit my second shot. I guess I deserved it.

When we called Gettysburg yesterday to cancel the tee time, they said 'Yeah we are basically closed and figured you weren't coming but if you want to come up and play we won't charge you'. Thanks, maybe another time.

Nice to be playing golf on December 22 and finish in 3:20 without rushing.

Round : not my lowest score, but my most memorable round was beating Tumor in the second match play round of CC. We both played really well that day. We were like 72/73. Needed birdies to win holes, mostly. We had a lot of situations where it looked like one guy had a major advantage, and the hole ended up halved because of a big putt or a big up and down. 

 

Course : didn't travel much this year. Didn't play anything nice that comes to mind. 

 

Best Hole : Me and tumor playing a bracket style fourball. Hole 20, dogleg left, back pin. Everyone else is stroking off me. I hit a high booming draw that gave me like 110 in and I hit a 54 to 1 foot. Unfortunately, the other guys made NET bird and then won it on hole 21. TVJ made the net bird after he had just made a 15 footer to halve on hole 19. Frustrating round, but memorable. 

 

Best Hole (honorable mention) : Parring hole 9 in the summer solstice. I think it was one of 2 pars that day on that hole. I had 6 feet for birdie and 5 feet for par coming back. 

 

Best golf shot :  Too many to count. I love good chips. One day, TVJ had hit his second to a foot on a par 5's and I was just off the green with a chip on the back side of a ridge with a huge left to right break. Had to clip it perfectly, get it to stop on the top of the ridge, and it trickled in dead center. I love hitting chips. 

 

Best putt was a 20-foot up and over the ridge to a back pin for birdie on hole 14 at Little Bennet during the Solstice. When I hit it, Dom said, "that's the best putt I've seen all year" so that's something. It was ALL feel.  

 

Purchase : monthly dues.

Best Round: 70 from the TTs at Waverly, with a dumb-dumb fourball double on hole 2.  I think it was a day the greens were punched.  And the course was soft, playing max distance.  It was one of those days where things just fell into place.  I was pumping it off the tee, and the putts went in.  Everybody else was having an off day, but I legit might've won a match if the 3 others played their best ball against mine.

 

Best Course: I didn't go anywhere this year.  I think Blue Mash, Waverly, and Turf Valley are the only 3 courses I played.  EDIT - I played Worthington once as well.  EDIT 2 - I also played Hobbits, Rolling Road, Country Club of MD, and Cattail Creek.  3 courses was a bit of an underestimate lolz.  Still, I don't feel like I played all over the place this year.  Zero rounds out of state.

 

Best Hole: I can't think of anything from regular golf here.  I didn't play and compete quite as much this year, due to covid and blowing out an ankle for the entire summer basically.  I'll throw in a pseudo golf hole.  I was just starting to swing a club, and only wedges, coming off my ankle injury.  So I go walk 9 with City and TVJ, and only play the Obee 100 yard game while they play regular golf plus 100 yard game.  I holed out the "tee shot" on our 8th hole, which I believe still stands as the only hole-out in the 100 yard game amongst those guys.

 

Best Golf shot: Smooch 5 iron to 15ft, on the 17th hole at Blue Mash.  Not a remarkable shot in terms of pure golf shot terms, but the situation made it feel better.  We're standing on that tee waiting, and Domes gives me the "Hey, you're playing pretty well.  Are you around even?" or something to that effect.  I was 2 under par.  They either didn't know it, or were playing dumb.  Now I had to announce it, while waiting to hit the most butt-puckering shot on that golf course.  The wind was blowing in the face, and towards the water, as usual.  It felt good to step up and hit that shot.

 

Best Golf purchase: Joining Turf Valley.

Best Round: Quite a few great ones but the one that sticks out would be winning my first round club championship match after being 5 down through 11. No one with my (occasionally poor) mental makeup comes back from being 5 down through 11. Begs the obvious question if I can put the hammer down and win 6 out of 7 holes - why not do that to start? Unf I dont think its that easy. You play in enough matches and in enough tournaments, things happen, you lose holes, you get down big - may not even have anything to do with you. But that was a massive deal for me.

 

Honorable Mention: Shooting an even par 70 with 5 birdies in the round.

 

Best Course: Sheep Ranch

 

Honorable Mention: Cascata (Las Vegas)

 

Best Hole: Too many

 

Best Shot: Pacific Dunes 17, long par 3, playing @ 190 yards. I'm basically exhausted, its been in and out foggy all round, windy, I just want to be done and get some food at this point. Pin is tucked way left behind a massive bunker, caddie says hit it on the right edge. Whatever. I hit a very average 5 iron, it rolls on the front right edge and just....keeps rolling. Caddie pulls out his rangefinder to watch it. Says "1 inch". I was like, an inch what. Sure enough, it was a legit ball outside the hole. God I cannot wait to go back there.

 

Best Purchase: Cortisone shot in my shoulder.

 

Honorable Mention: New irons, wedges, putter, a million headcovers and towels and an uncountable amount of golf merch from the Masters and five different pro shops at BD.

What a crazy year.

Really grateful for golf, friends and new friends for getting through a crazy year.  I will not deny that I probably played more golf this year than ever. Safely and usually with the same group.  Big thanks to Dom, Mark, CJ, Christian, Nick, Chase and ....Eagle for the friendship and multiple rounds at Worthington. 
 

Best Round - True Blue, Myrtle Beach. Think I hit every fairway and green and should have scored much better if I had made some putts. 
Shooting under par at Highland Golf Links with my wife driving the cart and on our wedding anniversary. And tearing my calf muscle the same day.

My friend shooting an inspired 76 at Worthington two days before his wife’s cancer surgery. He had never broken 85 anywhere..

 

Best meaningful round - Worthington when MD opened the courses. With Eagle, Dom and DC. 

 

Best Course played this year - Golden Horseshoe. Played horrendously bad and Marshall still shot a 65. Literally like enjoying a gourmet meal with people throwing up around you.

 

Best Hole - #13 at Pawley Plantation.

#3 at Worthington - hope to par it one day.

 

Best Golf shot - My hole in one at Worthington #17.

It does seem like a long time ago.

Worst shot - Altsean’s layup into  a par 3 bunker at the Blue Mash CC. The photo is also symbolic of the year. Covid threw a horrible buried lie at us. Most of bounced back. Including Altsean after a triple bogey!

Best round- second to last week of UMD fall league and my partner and I are down 4 points in standings entering the match. Neither one of us had been playing real great this fall but my partner was steady and had really carried the team all season. We are playing the league leaders who had been playing consistent all season. After a warm up on the range and losing the first hole it was obvious my buddy didn't bring his 'A' game. I didn't have an 'A', 'B' or 'C' game all year but that day I started making some shots and dropping some putts. We ended up winning the match 7-2 (+1 point for winning) to take the lead in the league. I only shot a 42 but with strokes it was enough. It felt good because I'm not used to wearing the saddle.

 

Best meaningful round- I cannot pick a favorite as there were several casual rounds with friends where everyone played OK and the weather, course and company were perfect. I enjoy that type of round more every year.

 

Best Course- Bulle Rock probably, my first round there.  Worthington really is hard to beat.

 

Best Golf shot-  Approach shot on #7 at UMD during a fall league match. Opponent hits his approach to about 6 feet. Me, really needing to win hole, hit to about 3 feet, make putt. Opponent misses makes par. After the match he said that he was pissed that I hit my shot inside of his because he felt like they were going to really whup us that day. We ended up halving match.

 

Best Golf purchase- Taylor Made Tour Response ball. Feels similar to the Titleist NXT I used to really like.

Best Round 

A couple come to mind. 78 at Little Bennett in heavy fog after starting double-double. And, the morning rounds at WoMan this summer with Dom, Christian, Vinay, June, ....

 

Best Course 

Like everyone else, I didn't travel much. Probably Baywood Greens near Rehobeth. Love that course. Also played hWhiskey several times. Always at the top of my list

Best Hole

Birdie on Baywood #15 par 3. Steep uphill, always into the wind. Tee shot to 2 1/2 ft. This was made even better since it followed a snowman 8 on the goofy island fairway 14th (sunk 2 balls) and was followed by another snowman on the par 5 16th (sunk 2 more). I don't ever remember going 8-2-8 in a three hole stretch

$60 yard sale special Scotty Cameron NP2 in Bethany Beach. Had a crooked grip and a dent in the shaft. I swapped out the shaft with one I had on the basement, slapped a new grip on it and used it the rest of the year. Not any better or worse than the other 8 putters I have, but it was a great deal

Best Round:  78 at Bandon Trails including a double on the driveable par 4 14th.  Day 1, round 2 of the trip and really the only nice weather round we got all trip.  No birdies, but the wind was down and the course was playing firm and was striping the 3 iron off a good number of tees to get in position for easy pars.  Probably lipped a half dozen putts that round.

   

Best Course:  Would be easy to say one of the Bandon courses, but I'm not sure which I would pick (SR or BD probably).  So I'll pick Hyannisport, a turn of the century Donald Ross design on Cape Cod.  Clubhouse is at the top of a hill overlooking Nantucket Sound, most of the course plays through the marshes right on the Sound. Won our match on 17, so had a free swing on 18th tee.  Playing partners insisted I hit driver (301 p4 downwind, but up hill).  Put it on the tennis courts of the Shriver Estate that runs along the right hand side of 18.      

 
Best Hole: Way too many to count.  Probably 16 at Bandon Dunes.  Runners up: Sheep Ranch 6, 16, 17.  PD 6, Hyannisport 3, Trails 17.

 

Best Golf shot:  2nd shot on 18 at Bandon Trails. Fanned my 3i off the tee into a FW pot-ish (small and deep) bunker on the far right inside of the dogleg.  Uphill, 120 with trees obscuring flag and 3/4 of the green.  Had to get a 9 iron up and cutting just to get it on the green.  Hit it to about 20 feet.

 

Best Golf purchase: Duh.  4 days and 8 rounds at Bandon Dunes.

Hey boys, it's been a minute. Sorry for being AFK since being back in the area, just been bit of a whirlwind in the past year. New gig, moving, COVID. But the good news is my wife and I are expecting a baby girl in January. God willing, sometime after the quarantine is winding down and we start to get her on a more regular sleep schedule, I will be in desperate need of some dew sweeper rounds.

Best Round: Winning the First Tee Adult / Child tournament at EPP's Red Course with my 7-year old daughter in her first ever golf tournament.

 

 

 

Best Course: Probably Pinehurst #4 back in February, which also feels more like 11 years ago than 11 months ago.

 

Best Hole: It's tougher to pick a hole than a single shot, but I'll go with #18 at ANCC in Fairfax during the Colony Collapse match play.  I was 1 up heading to 18 which is short par 4.  I hit a solid drive down the middle leaving ~50 yds left to a small green.  I hit a good LW to the green and 2 putted for a 2 up win.  Nothing spectacular, but just 4 solid shots with some pressure to close out a match.  

 

Best Golf shot: #4 at The Cradle.  #4 is 130 yds on the card, but was playing into the wind and cold in February.  I hit a knock down 8I to 3' and made the putt for the skin.  We were playing as a ~15some and playing for skins so it is tough to beat the immediacy of the shot coupled with the gaggle of spectators / hecklers. 

 

Best Golf purchase: Probably club dues just because it gave the family a place to escape 2020 for a while and we played more rounds there this year than ever.

 

Best Record Against Hive nemesis @aiyyer: 2-0.  Wins at Stonewall, with @bandondunes54 in attendance, and a team and singles win at The 7s with @Ocgolfrick.  This year's wins put the grudge match at 2-1 for the good guys and I'll be looking to extend the streak in 2021. #bandon2021  😀

Best Round: score-wise, 72 @ Me's Nest.  Had to birdie 18 to do it too.  Life-wise, so many great rounds with Hivers. Too many to count, too difficult to choose. Very lucky to be part of such an awesome group. Especially meaningful during the pandemic.

Best Course: Lakewood CC

Best Hole: #4 at PB Dye.  Bomb diggity drive, then made a me by holing out from 78 with a SW I purchased the week prior.

Best Golf Shot: during the Capitol Cup, THDC and I were 1DWN on #18.  Alternate shot. He striped it into the fairway, I flagged it, we win the hole.

Best Shot: Nuking a drive up the chute on Pikewood #17, in some of the hardest rain I've ever played in. Honorable mention to a 55 yard wedge hole out for eagle at CCMD #4. 

 

Best purchase: Sun Mountain 2.5+

 

index closed the year at 8.8, it was a tough golf year for me but I hope to be healthy and ready to go next year. Probably had my best putting and short game year and need to keep working on the long game.
