New TM p790 irons ???

Recommended Posts

So I went in to my local shop (Carl’s Golfland) and tried these again, here I am eating my words. I will admit, these irons are absolutely phenomenal, aside from the low spin and very sketchy gapping, I can definitely see why so many golfers choose to bag these, I’m now debating on getting a set. Pairing these with Modus 120 X brings a new experience all together. I would like to apologize for all my trouble and rants but I still stand by my comment about gapping but I will also admit that I was way too critical on these irons.

Seems the tour Dept may need to build mine, I want the heavy heads they use in std and shorter builds .. not the lighter ones they use for over length sets like mine

Looks real nice - might try that on mine. What'd you use to strip?

I piece of advice, as I've walked this path.

I suggest calling them every day until your build is complete, to the point of being a nuisance.

The online "Custom Shop" doesn't deal with swingweighting. In fact, if you call the first time, they might flat out tell you they don't swingweight. This isn't a PING shop where they'll ensure every detail is cared for. They'll glue the shafts into some heads, cut them, and ship them.

It's up to you to ensure your build is done properly. Escalate within Customer Service until you get to someone that can make decisions. Otherwise you might take delivery on a set of irons that are way off spec.

Also, once you receive your irons, take them to a pro shop to check the loft/lie.

Did you get a TM sponsorship deal overnight or something? Haha

Seriously, though... A very interesting change of heart here. What, exactly, swayed you?

These heads just perform. It's not to say that others can't or don't, but out on the course they just perform. I'll be interested to read your review if you're able to get some course-time with a set of these.

... I pretty much just used a corn cob holder and picked it clean. A little acetone on the stubborn paint fill, but I only needed a little.

They’re just fun to hit, not exactly a precision based iron but I feel like if you really get these dialed in, they give you an immediate advantage on the course, spin would be the biggest downside of course but if I can find a way to control that aspect these could be a force to be reckoned with. I think it’s just a mixture of great looks, performance and if I can get over the top line and offset I think I may have a winner here.

One thing to note: These irons completely changed when I paired them up with Modus 120 X’s, the feel was outstanding.

good comment on shaft selection above

they were OK for me in some of my buds set ups .. 950gh, Ctaper lite, modus 130 x, DG105 .. 4 combos I tried

But dump mypreferred shafts in, at longer, at flatter, at heavier .... and they were REALLY impressive feeling and performing

Yeah, unless you've put a shaft in them that completely kills the spin these were designed to have, I think you're going to find that these things perform (the ball stops on greens) the way you want them to.

Agreed. I put PX LZ 120s in mine and I love them. Plenty of stopping power and flight for me

... I had no problem stopping my P790's until I stayed in Phoenix last winter. Several courses I played had very hard and fast greens and stopping iron shots was a problem. Unlike the Midwest where you have ball marks for every shot and some deep craters, it was rare to even find a shallow dent in the desert greens. I picked up a set of P760's and the problem was solved. I would add it was just several courses in my normal rotation and certainly not all courses I played, so the problem was a very specific one. When I came back to the Midwest in late May I went back to my P790's.

those who've bought the 790s, did you buy with standard lofts? seems you could add a little spin and increase descent angle by weakening the loft 1-2*. Anyone choosing to do this or have tried this?

I can add to this, but slightly smaller sample size. Was fit into 2019 model and received them first week of September. Have about 25 rounds in with them. Zero issues with this as well. A good swing hits my intended number, have not had one shot that went more than intended. Driver SS 110-113, my miss is slightly heel side (I fight being too inside out)

Not long term for me yet.

I put the 2019 790 5 iron in the bag back in November, and I liked it enough that I decided to fill out the set. In my case I was ordering a SIM driver anyway, and so I traded in a bunch of stuff at the 150% bonus, to the point where I only paid tax for the driver and the 790 6-P.

As far as irons in this category go, I've owned a set of AP3s & 718 T-MBs, and an I500 6 iron. From a feel perspective these are definitely the best of the bunch. In the looks department, they are certainly not the equal of the T-MBs, but also not bad either. Performance on mishits seems better with the 790s than any of the others.

I'm a low-launch, high-spin digger and all of my "players distance" irons have been set a bit weak in the long and mid irons. For me, this means 2 additional benefits: a little less offset and a little more bounce. The wider sole with a little extra bounce really fits me well, and so far I've seen no issues with spin on these either. I could certainly do without the thick topline, but it's not all that bad.

My (5-P) set goes 25, 28.5, 32, 36, 40, 44.5. I haven't had many rounds yet, but the trajectory is nice and high, the good shots do what I expect in terms of distance (a few yards farther than my Honmas), direction is reliable, gapping seems fine, and the bad shots are significantly better than they should be. The feel on these is surprisingly decent as well.

I'm not sure yet if these will permanently be in the bag for 2019. My Honma 747V are probably the best forged cavity backs I've ever played (and I've played a bunch over the years!), but the performance of the 790s is pretty hard to argue with. I think the only other club I'm truly interested in is the PXG Gen 3 T. Not sure if I'm willing to go that far on price though.
