I don’t know why I’m unable to quote so, shigy I’m not attacking by any means I was trying to illustrate the difference between 1-100 because 1/2 stroke by stroke is huge at the professional level...I think we see eye to eye on 99 percent of the same you highlighted an interview I’m telling you from playing with Rory and being a decent player myself and knowing guys on Tour (both KF and PGA). To just simply look at stroke average is not indicative of the whole story when comparing two players.

I love your post...I recently got scolded for saying that the difference between #1 and the #100th player in the world was not that far apart.

Brendon Todd in 2018 was 2036th in OWGR, two week ago he was 184th OWGR and this week he is 83rd OWGR....Winning back to back tournaments and going for the three-peat this week.....that would shake up the golf world! Guess the traditionalist want to rollback the driver to 250 yards seeing that Brendon average 285 yards off the tee and 278 yards if you count all of his drives....(sarcasm) Now I think that there isn't much different than #1 and #2000 in the PGATOUR....(SARCASM)

Think that I'll play the long shot and put a $C-note. on the 3-peat...

Fast & firm. Those are the conditions needed to challenge good golfers.

 

Short or long, fast & firm makes a player work more. Slow & soft is too easy for a good player.

 

I know: Outdoor game, can't control weather, etc.

I have two reasons that make me say that. For me it's a common sense issue based on what my eyes tell me...……. and what I see is that during the season you have your top notch players that win no more than three tournaments a year. You have no dominant player in today game......

So many first time winners, older players resurrecting their careers (Tiger Woods)LOL!, kids coming out of college and winning right away, not to mention technology that's available for everyone. Fitness is a big part of the game and the most important factor is that the mental game is far superior in todays game. Every body now think that they can win now....

Just look at Brendon Todd GO!

 

Next thing you know Adam Scott or Jordan Speith will be winning again If they get it together mentally.

The 250 yard number was never about pro golfers. It is for scratch golfers. Scratch golfers are not pro golfers, and I dont know that they ever were pro golfers. Courses are not rated for pros, they are rated so that amateurs can compete against other amateurs of varying skill.

Oh, just by simply looking at last years winners. not exactly difficult to do. Over half were won by guys ranked below 30 or so.

 

On the original subject and the many assertions that the winning score should not be the likes of -20.

How in the world do you set up a course to stop the guy that hits it where he wants to and makes putts? That describes the winner on tour most weeks.

But you guys don't have slope in England, which makes course ratings just silly. It's why you guys are finally going to the slope system, which is just a much more complete system. On the other hand, WE are going to your SSS system whereby the rating/slope of a course can be adjusted on a DAILY basis, if needed. Good stuff in our future on both sides of the pond! :-)

This is a fantastic post and great insight by Dahmen. Whenever the "pro versus scratch" thing comes up, there are four things I want to know in order to fairly handicap the match:

1) Who's the pro?

2) What course are they playing? (HUGELY important)

3) Is the scratch a competitive am and has he been for a long time?

4) Did the "scratch" used to be a +3/+4 at some point and is now a 0 after years of being a plus-capper as a younger player?

Par is adjusted for certain holes for the Tour. Any par 4 over 475 would be a par-5 for the golfer hitting 250 yard drives.

No, I don't think any golf course is to short to host a professional tournament because most old courses started out as either a 9 or a 12 hole golf course and many of those held championships.

As one of the posters pointed out, there has never been a stroke play tournament where the lowest score didn't win...

Can't blame you. For a sec I thought it was Shilgy talking too lol. To me the craziest thing is that despite what the pro's can see as a huge difference in skill, the difference in score isn't all that large. 2019 Rory played lights out, had 2.551 SG total. Dahmen was at 0.085. And he's right, Rory was better in all aspects, and by a lot. Actually OK the difference in strokes is quite large. That was by SG, Rory's best year. Though he didn't win any majors. Still he's losing more than a stroke to Rory even on a down year, is what he's saying.
