I tend to basically agree with you but then again it seemed a so much more relaxed atmosphere kinda like a late afternoon $20 dog fight winner take all--- Personally I could care less what any one on any tour wears or for that matter what anyone else wears on any course---- Ya know man just saying --- Of course you know me from on here and I am pretty laid back in general

Shorts should be allowed on all tours when temps are estimated above 90 degrees. They must be regulated for consistancy puposes.

The colors must be black, brown or white, the length must be knee high or just above and they must be limited to five logos....

Anything deviating from the above will result in a disqualification....

Right, wrong or indifferent, I think it looks sloppy when the professionals wear them. Same principle in a sense for the clubhouse staff. It is sort of a uniform.

^My personal feelings and just an opinion, no real sense in attempting to sway me another way. I likewise won't try to sway you if your's differs.

Regardless of temperature in an elite level professional golf event it looks really sloppy. The winner wore trousers and there were plenty of players from the UK playing in the event some worse trousers.

I've chatted with tour staff about this and based off those discussions, I'd venture to say in 3-4 years shorts will be allowed on the tour. Wouldn't be surprised to see range finders be allowed as well in that time frame.

God Bless

Ummm...clothing sponsors want to sell clothes...to fans! Fans are gonna buy waaaaay more pairs of shorts that they see pros wearing than pants. So, don’t be surprised to see Nike, Adidas, Under Armor, et al excited to see shorts allowed on tour and equipping their guys with the latest.

It's sad that there are so many people caught up in their perception of tradition or what’s right for the game. That, in part, is one of the very attitudes that makes people (rightfully) call our beloved game stuffy and what keeps the game from attracting as many young new players. Things (sports/games) evolve. Or they die.

Furthermore, to all those comparing golf attire to that of team sports, uniforms are to identify all players on a team, and many of those unis serve utilitarian functions (as others have stated). And if they don’t serve a real purpose, (cricket?), then maybe that sport is as much of a laggard as golf is. Attire for individual sports has continued to change with the times and allow more individual choice - see tennis, bowling, swimming, gymnastics, skiing, running, etc., - and the participants wear what works for them in terms of form and function as long as it doesn’t provide an unfair advantage.

For those so entrenched in the pants-or-die camp, rewind the clock a hundred years or so and tell me how you’d like to play in a dress shirt, tie, waist jacket and plus fours. I'm sure there were just as many golfers raging against the then-trend of wearing slacks with a short-sleeved golf shirt ("I don't want to see no golfer's elbows"). Think you're a traditionalist? Are you one of the (presumably) few who would enjoy 1900s golf attire? Roll back the clock and knock yourself out. But stop worrying about how the game’s attire looks on everyone else. Times change...stop living in the past.

Tirade over.

FWIW, I'm 53. Not that age is the absolute determining factor on these opinions. And not to make this thread overly serious, but I'm also of an ethnic background that likely wouldn't have been welcomed on most golf courses less my lifetime ago (at least not without a rake or mower). Should those days also be considered "traditional" and a time we should go back to? Some might say yes, but I'm thankful for the evolution of the game in that respect.

Change is inevitable. Instead of fighting it, at lease tolerate it until you can embrace it and find your place within it. Maybe you'll even learn to like the new normal.

I hate the feeling personally because I've never been forced to tuck my shirts in anywhere, so for me it feels awkward, but I think shorts and untucked shirts should be a players choice. I don't see why the players can't have that option. Of course, there would have to be rules involved on what styles, lengths and so on.

@bscinstnct - NEED to be tucked in? H3LL NO! Again, why get so wrapped up in how a person's clothes look? Personally, I find it more restricting to play with a tucked in shirt and it makes it harder to stay cool in really hot weather. I'm less concerned with it looking odd as others have stated but think that's up to each player. Look, I don't have a problem adhering to the tuck rule when playing a private club. But I think tuck/no tuck is yet another manifestation of golfers getting bogged down in how people SHOULD LOOK when playing the game.
I realize this isn't a realistic scenario, but let's assume you had a choice between mandating that ALL players wear long pants and/or tucked shirts versus giving them the choice but making sure they ALL play ready golf in a timely pace. One has absolutely no impact on the game, while the other would make all the difference in the world in terms of the overall quality and enjoyment of the game. Why don't we focus on things that actually affect the game?

@ChronicSlicer interesting that you said: "Of course, there would have to be rules involved on what styles, lengths and so on." That can become a slippery slope. A while back, we saw the rise of of the mock neck golf shirt...basically, a glorified t-shirt. And what about the quarter-zip pullovers? Can you really tell (or do you care) what kind of shirt they're wearing underneath?
And why does the length matter? To prevent players from showing their bellies? To avoid super long shirts? What about sleeve length? Collar width? Number of buttons? While all that seems silly to mention, rules COULD get really specific about what golfers are allowed to wear, while much of that currently tends to be driven by the fashion trends of the time.

Not sure what your point is, @Hawkeye77, but @DON SVO tried to make the point that players would choose sponsorship money instead of wearing shorts, implying that they would only get money from sponsors for wearing pants, not shorts. My point in the quote you posted was that, if the PGA Tour gets to the point of allowing pros to wear shorts, the clothing manufacturers will happily pay them to wear their shorts because it's more likely they'll sell waaaay more shorts than they currently sell pants.
Apologies if I misinterpreted your post.

Why don't you have an issue tucking in at a private club?

MLB, NBA, NFL.....all require players tuck in. Why?

Because your'e a professional and should look sharp. It's *all about appearance and promoting a product and players that deliver an image worthy of being a professional.

This just ain't cutting it....
