Shorts on Tour

I thought it was fine - I tune in to watch the golf.

If people on here played at Leopard Creek (or down here in Oz in summer for that matter), I believe you would be a little less conservative in your thoughts on appropriate attire, and real quick.

This'll spread and people will get used to it pretty quickly. I was kind of shocked thursday but on sunday, when cooler and like half the field played in shorts I did not really see those shorts. I saw pro golfers playing exciting golf.

Was unanimous on morning drive this morning , including Hack , RDD and the ladies. Each agreed that it looked wrong and unprofessional. shackledford added that he didn’t want the pros to look like gallery members. Absolutely agree.

How is it unprofessional for men to wear shorts, but the women can wear short skirts, tight dresses, whatever and that's ok? Completely illogical.

 

Like I said, there is a really weird aversion to men's legs that I don't understand.

As previously stated. You can’t putt well in ugly shoes .... so it stands to reason that you can’t hit it as good looking down at chicken legs .... so yes. I want to see the best golf possible. And I believe that can only be played while being well dressed.

should college teams wear pants? you realize the best college kids are arguably better than average pga tour pros, certainly better than bottom of barrel pga tour pros. imagine how good they'd be if they wore pants

Some clubs wouldn't even allow women members in very recent history. The oldest golf establishments have always been heavy on tradition, whether they make sense to modern standards or not, thus the stuffy old guy perception is more true than not although many amateurs don't hold the same views. In many ways the top professional organizations and clubs lead the way in change in other sports, it's the same for golf. Shorts are funny. Most clubs just require you to just tuck in your polo (or collared shirt). Shorts are always just fine. It's just a pro thing. I'll wear long pants in the summer for protection against the sun, but if not I'll just spray on some suntan lotion. Also prevents the pretty silly looking sock tan.

The White Sox wore shorts in a game back in the early 80's. The players didn't want to slide fearing raspberries. I don't blame them. I had some gnarly ones when I played slow pitch softball.

Golf is the only sport I can think of where there is a divergence between what the top pro players wear (men, specifically, in this case) and the rest of the very seriously competitive ranks. I'm thinking US Amateur, college golf, and the like. Shorts are allowed in those events and players there look very much like highly serious golfers.

In all other main sports I can think of, athletes pretty much wear the same thing throughout the competitive ranks. From HS sports, competitive youth leagues up through college and the pros. A HS baseball uni looks pretty much like a MLB uni. A bantam hockey player looks like a shrunk down NHL-er. Same for ski racing, tennis, swimming, soccer. Golf is the outlier here.

I know fulll well there are certainly some younger folks who would like to keep long pants on Tour, but I would be highly surprised if the overall tendency here doesn't show a strong correlation between preference on this issue and age.

This is going to change. It's darn near inevitable at this point. And when it does, we'll wonder what all the fuss was about. I'm sure the same has been said about persimmons, knickers, metal spikes, and a number of much more controversial items related to golf's history. The game evolves. Slower than some would like, faster than others would prefer.

You wear a uniform. And the uniform is designed to provide a sharp look that tells you

 

It's game day!

 

 

Golf is the only sport where you have latitude on what you wear. And there should be standards to maintain that same highly professional, game day look, at the very least.

I personally think trousers should be worn on the Big Tours, however in the grand scheme of things it's just a sign of the modern times. I mean 75 years ago most of the gallery was wearing suits and ties, now we can't keep peoples shirts on.

Long pants just look more professional, and modern fabrics really lend themselves to playing in extreme heat. I for one hope the no shorts policy stays in effect on the PGA and Euro tours, you gotta wear your "big boy pants" when playing with the big boys.

That being said, if people getting to see Phils calves sells more tickets, then what do I know? Ferguson, are you reading this? I know you can't look away, his calves are like the sun....
