S2 -- I think it's a great concept. My OCD would require that they be spaced perfectly, but it's a very cool concept! (And it would certainly rankle some of my buddies where I play!)

If you would read my OP, you would notice that I cited "pistol" ammunition (of which the .40 S&W is an example) along with combat rifle cartridges such as the 5.56 and 7.62. If you would like me to go into the ballistic properties of cartridges such as the ones I have mentioned and point out why they are unsuitable for much outside of combat, I am more than happy to do so.

So would you say .223 and a .308 is combat ammunition as well?

What I stated is that they were initially designed for combat, and as such they have highly limited utility outside of it. With the .223, this is an incontrovertible fact. You can use it for varmints and whitetails, but why would one when there are much more accurate and humane loads, like say a .243 Winchester.

 

The .308 is much more complicated because it depends on case size and powder load. Again, when it comes to folks making totems out of ammunition casings, I predominantly see 7.62 x 39 casings utilized - which again is a very small round, designed specifically for combat, and has limited utility outside of that.

Nothing is designed to kill a human until a human decides it is. Bullets, casings and guns are intimate objects until put into action. In this example, The .40 cal fits the circle diameter thus it was used. Please keep your ridiculous commentary to yourself about "Killing humans"

 

Isn't there a march you can join to put ammunition manufacturers out of business?

7.65s, .38s, 9mms or .357s around here (we won't get into the rifles and shotguns, lol). If you are into shooting do what you want with your empties - beats seeing brass on the ground at the range!

I see a lot of things crafted by folks who served in the armed forces (I did not exercise the privilege) that often use old cartridge cases to good effect, for example.

Two sides to everything and never know how life experiences will form opinions or even what reasonable reactions they may cause, but I doubt the guy who is working on this putter would have minded a simple "not my thing", but maybe anything beyond that isn't for this discussion and gets us into politics which gets us all in trouble. ;-)

If the guy who is working on that likes it that is all that matters!

that said, while reading this thread I was reminded of the most significant difference between my liberal friends and a sporting rifle. My sporting rifle has only One TRIGGER and I know exactly how much pressure is required to set it off!
