Peter Kostis on Patrick Reed.....

Sure. Now that you point that out. It does help with his credibility. But then it begs the question , why is the media now reporting it as new news? Why not report what he said then ....then? It’s all a bunch of drummed up rehash of old news that wasn’t earth shattering the first time. And somehow started by brooks the blowhard , while playing hip hop sheik on satellite show run by a cunning journalist , posing as a hip hop legend , who’s posing as your friend for the day. Brooks took the bait and created a news story that wasn’t there. All just to be “ cool “ for the day and get to wear his hat backwards.

Blade! I hear you and have seen players do this with a wedge here and there a couple of times.

But Kostis has been out there for decades and decades. He is saying he has seen Reed use *multiple clubs, in and out of his bag, to very noticeably improve his lie, on several occasions.

“He put four or five clubs behind the ball, kind of faking whether he’s going to hit this shot or hit that shot. By the time he was done, he hit a frickin’ 3-wood out of there. When I saw it, it was a sand-wedge lay-up originally.”

“He hit it over the green and did the same thing. He put three or four clubs behind the ball. It was really a treacherous shot. Nobody had gotten close all day long from over there. By the time he was done, I could read ‘Callaway’ on the golf ball from my tower.”

This is very specific, first hand testimony, from a guy right there at the "scene of the crime" who is an expert in the field. It's way beyond, "hey, that guy put his wedge behind the ball a couple of times"

Right. I’m not so much defending Reed as I am saying hat if Kostis says he’s never seen anyone else do it. That hurts Kostis credibility. We both agree that others do it.

in other words. I’ll care when they call out the players they like too. Not just the guy they never have liked.

that tactic is as old as the game. You can find Seve and player doing it a looong time ago. On tape.

Things to keep in mind. In Peter’s experience, he’s been a tower and on course walking reporter following high profile players in contention that are being viewed by a large live and TV audience. Brooks Koepka’s experience includes rounds and pairings he has been part of. These include his earlier years on European Tour and other small tours. Smaller audience and in cases even no audience. Brooks had a completely different experience than Peter.

All due respect, but you are wrong. “Grounding and clearing” with a variety of different clubs before a shot from the rough is EXTREMELY common, almost to the point of it being a universally ignored concept of a rule. Since you ARE allowed to ground a club in the rough, guys just have decided that if you ground a few times and the lie just happens to get better, oh well....you are simply using the rules to your advantage.

In addition to seeing this at every tour event Ive ever been too, I was a Club Pro in the 90’s and you saw this at every local event I ever played in and every Amateur event I played in before turning pro. If someone DIDN'T do it you thought, “Oh wow, what an idiot. Doesn’t that guy know the rules?”.

If you were to call someone out on it, good luck. Where exactly is the line between grounding your club legally and improving your lie?? Do You really want to have a fight about that in the middle of a round or try to call it after the round is over with no other witnesses?? Good luck with that. You’d be a pariah real fast.

Thanks for the link. remember hearing that comment from him on the telecast and thinking it was kind of weird but didn't pay much attention.

Don't think its a matter of just tapping down the grass behind. The way he described it he pretty much moved the grass and the ball, which in my opinion is a whole different animal.

As I said in my previous post, I agree. It happens constantly. Its one of the most ignored rules in golf, Amateur or professional level.

I suppose the only differentiation would be the “level” at which the rule is broken. When you see someone set a 5 wood behind the ball and the shaft bows downward because of the pressure he’s putting on it, and then he grabs the proper club for the shot, say, a 7 iron...you have a dilemma on your hands. At some point the rule breaking is so egregious that something should be done about it. Still, most people just keep their mouth shut and grumble to themselves about it.

I just listened to the podcast and this ^^^^ is 100% accurate. I almost fell out of my seat when I heard him say that the Tour got on him for not mentioning the Fed Ex points. That explains why in January they mention Fed Ex points and the playoffs. Mentioning playoffs in January, is like saying an MLB team is on track to be in the playoffs in early May.

This is what he did that gave Kostis the motivation to discuss. It's the use of multiple clubs and complete changing of the lie. And I think if he had seen *any other instances of other players doing something similar, he would have mentioned them as well. He knows how serious it is to say this about PR. He is not on the air, but it's entirely possible they will come face to face again.

“He put four or five clubs behind the ball, kind of faking whether he’s going to hit this shot or hit that shot. By the time he was done, he hit a frickin’ 3-wood out of there. When I saw it, it was a sand-wedge lay-up originally.”

I read that too. It was the Carcharodon Carcharias Partnership out of Brisbane, aka, 2CP. They swept in at the 11th hour and cut a check to Howard's wife, Shirley Scheelter (say that 5 times fast).

The article didn't say who manages the partnership - I guess we'll never know....drives me crazy not knowing????

Such is life with art collectors - most do not openly share their collections.

You are absolutely allowed to ground your club, not sure why its wrong. There is a difference between grounding it as you are preparing to take a shot and pretending like you are going to hit 4 different clubs, grounding each and everyone one.

The NLU podcast with Kostis combined with the Foreplay podcast with Ferehty is pretty telling about Reed and his propensity to bend the rules

Of course, but never break the rules. First I start with a wedge, just to see what a wedge looks like behind the ball, since not really sure how a wedge looks lined up on the ball or just can't remember. Push it down a bit while I think about if I should just hack it out and take my medicine. Then I put it away and pull a 9 iron...do the same just to see how it looks since lie now looks better after checking it with the wedge....take a few practice swings. Then try 7 and 5... lie keeps looking better and starting to think I don't have to hack it out and take my medicine since I can see the ball so much better. Finally decide to hit my hybrid and am amazed how nicely it comes out after remembering how it looked when I walked up. Playing partners and groups behind me a little pissed, but I won the skin...so all good.
