Can't seem to find a PGA Pro who can fix this in my swing.... HELP

Recommended Posts

There is a device called The Right Angle that Jim Waldron endorses that you strap on your right arm that restricts the amount your right elbow can bend. Or, you can cut a piece of 3" pvc, get a velcro strap and fasten it in the crook of your right elbow, that will curb your hinge. These will let you get the feel without overthinking where your arm is or what it is doing.

The Swing Extender is cheap, unobtrusive (so you don't look like a dork wearing it) and does the same thing...prevents bending your right elbow >90degrees.

Over-swinging/across-the-line is normally associated with being an arm swinger (of which I’m one). The below tips have shown the most promise for me to shorten my swing:

I don’t like this idea.. just because their is weight shifts, turning, etc doesn’t make it the same as a golf swing. If it was that simple, you wouldn’t see the average golfer shooting 100s. 90% of people can reasonably throw a ball With distance and accuracy. 20% of people can reasonably hit a ball accurate with distance. That’s why golf is hard.

It's not an idea, it's just a question. It's possible he can't shorten his backswing because, somewhere in his mind, he's worried he'll lose distance. I had a hard time experimenting with shorter backswings until I thought about what I do when I throw a ball. When I throw, I don't windup as far as possible. I only windup to where I feel is optimal. With that in mind, I was able to consider the possibility that a shorter backswing could work. You sure do have a rich imagination, though.

First try to keep your shoulders towards the goal as long as possible. Meaning rotate sholders as late as possible in the downswing.

Secondly move your right arm the same way a backstroke swimmer does in the beginning of the downswing. And also direct your aim towards your heel.

The reason for OT is the player dont compensate for the shoulder rotation so that rotation pushes the club out

EDIT somehow I completly missunderstod your Q. Sorry abt that.

Watching your swing I see a perfect ninety degree turn back plane, even through your over turn. You start your down swing with a slight turn of your left elbow(arm) back a few degrees diverting your plane to a less than your straight ninety for a out to in. You can see this turn by watching your club shaft position stopping just below right ear, just before or as you start down I can see the butt of your club turn downward and your club shaft position raises to above your right ear from that slight turn. Try starting both elbows down together to stay on your plane or with a slight start down of your right elbow diverting your plane line to a in to out(a greater than ninety degree turn).

I deal with a slightly similar issue, though I get more width and turn. Gankas team has told me to restrict bending of my trail elbow. I also take it back deep at first (directly down and away from the target line), not so much wide, and so my arms eventually have to re-set themselves (which causes trail elbow to bend and lead arm to bend).

So what I’ve been told is to go back wider and use a floatie on the trail elbow to restrict the bending. I’ve done it a little bit, but not enough to fix it.

The main problem it creates for me is a narrowing of the swing at the top and a pulldown of the arms rather than the proper shallowing.

I think you'll find infinitely more control with a more compact move. Heck, I generate my most power only getting to 3/4 of parallel, anything more and it's too disconnected feeling. Ever have those "partial" shots that go as far or farther than your stock swing??? This is part of the solution. I would immediately go the range or sim and start hitting what feels like 70-80% shots, backswing-wise, and put normal effort on the through swing. You might be surprised at the results. ymmv, of course.

I can tell from most of your replies that you have no intention of shortening your swing that much, but believe me, you're losing way more than you'd ever gain by going so far back. A swing change is going to feel unnatural to begin with, it has to, otherwise it will have no lasting effect on your end result, as you will eventually fall right back into the old groove. The mind and muscle groups must feel something out of the ordinary, enough so that a new feeling can emerge that engrains the change. Good luck in your pursuit!

Decent level of weight training will stiffen you right up as well, just so long as you avoid yoga and other stretchy type activities! Put on 15lbs of core and arm muscle and you'll be more restricted. Lastly, glove under the right arm-pit drill, that will definitely limit your ability to go too far back.

A lot of good golfers go/went across the line, like Bobby Jones so I don't think it is necessarily a big thing if you are hitting it how you want.

"Shirtsleeve" swing technique:

1. Setup: Elbows bent forearms pressed together against shaft slightly forward of center with "Hogan" "active/flexed" leg tension left foot turned out slightly and the right leg slightly farther to the right - weight mostly on balls of feet butt of left hands sits on the top of the grip with very light grip.

2. Swing - W/o disturbing weight distribution of legs and feet lower hands while doing a forward press "swing trigger" then the left upper arm takes over on the backswing, it needs to go out in front of the body then back in front of the chest as the hands trace down initially then up to over the right shoulder "Torres". The goal is to not disturb the pressure of the feet during the initial takeaway.

Notes:

1. Only swing thought after swing trigger - extend left arm at shirt sleeve when reaching left hand over right shoulder "Shirtsleeve technique".

2. The upper left arm move "Shirtsleeve technique" can be practiced independently without a club, sitting down for instance

3. The correct feet tension can be felt by doing very short hops on the balls of the feet then holding the same feeling of pressure on the front of the feet and then taking three practice swings with the grip very loose in order to not disturb the same pressure on the feet and on the 3rd swing actively do the "Shirtsleeve" move. From there the swing should be done within a matter of seconds to not lose the feel of the legs resisting, this way this is not a learned technique as much as it is a setup technique.

Thanks for all the input! I have sent video to 4 different pros and they all align with what Monte eluded to. Improper hip turn and straighter arms at the top. Drills recommended were with hip turn and then keeping a range bucket/8.5in dodgeball against my chest and above my elbows so my lead arm can't work across the body and so my trail elbow cant work behind my body.

Practice.. lol lot of practice. Lower body I need to work on turning my trail hip behind me with weight on inside of foot, rather than sliding and turning on the outside of my foot.

the second part is the range bucket against my chest, above my elbows, and swinging with the feel that my arms stay straight. This will help keep from my arm working too far across my chest.

wish me luck... and good practice habits!

Looks like you would be good at the top if you didn’t bend your left arm. You’re going to have to learn to keep your left arm straight and figure out how to hit it from there. For me focusing on keeping my right arm straighter works better. Your title of this post should be no pro could “help”me fix my problem. You’re going to have to take some ownership in this. Good luck. Golfs hard.

I'm watching that video thinking this swing looks really good and then the tape keeps rolling... oh.

Honestly, would like to see some 9-3 drill or L to L drill. I bet what you think it 9-3 is actually 10-2 and you will hit the ball just as far. Groove in a few range sessions with just 9-3 swings with a short iron. Really focusing on impact and compression. I think mentally when you feel that your ball striking is better and you see the distance numbers being similar, you will allow yourself to shorten the swing. Will take some time though.

Watch some swing videos of Rahm, Finau, Stricker. Guys that stop with the shaft pointed at the sky and not the ground.
