Rose Splits from Foley

Looks like it isn't just Honma that Rose has recently dumped. He's also now split from Sean Foley after 11 years working together.

His back hasn’t really been lasting. He has had problems with it off and on for years. Interesting that he is saying that he is going to be taking care of things himself. I am never quite sure how that can work all of the time but that said, his performance last week was an awful lot better than we had been seeing.

I'm Justin Rose and we are not Sean Foley.

Interesting news, he doesn't say a lot so doubt if he'll share much and that's fine, but I would also guess there will be someone he'll have looking at things.

Justin Rose is just so solid all round, but when his putter is working (which is often) a tough guy to beat. Great repeatable consistent swing.

Pretty sure Rose's swing has always been fundamentally sound and always will be.

I don't think Rose/Foley made any dramatic changes, ever. Unlike with Tiger where we saw a much different (worse) swing working with Foley.

I'm guessing he's a little pissed that he fell from 1st to 14th in the OWGR. Maybe he was planning on staying #1 for a while.

There is nothing wrong with Rose's move. He's been in a slump, not out of the ordinary to change things up.

He made changes to his swing when he first started working with him years back to a more rounded swing where the hands got deeper and he was a little more bent over at address. Prior to that he worked with David Leadbetter and had a more upright swing, it was pretty much a vanilla ideal looking swing. He would of done just as well had he not gone to Foley. Both were great swings but there was nothing wrong really with his swing prior to Foley. He was looking for someone to work with at the time and played a round with OHair who didn’t miss a green and got him interested.

Normal after 11 years to change or drop a swing coach. As a player you learn how to fix your own problems. Sounds like Rose will still do some occasional checkups with Foley.

He really started being successful when he worked and worked to become a very good putter. Wasn't always the case. When he did that, he will always be a top player.

Unrelated, but that article says that Sean Foley helped Tiger add distance. Are they talking about adding distance to short irons, because Tiger certainly wasn’t hitting driver further with Foley.

What's funny is OHair's game actually started slowly deteriorating from what Foley had him doing even though he swayed Rose by his playing, it worked really well for a while but they kept on it and over did it. The emphasis on hands in/deeper and delofting made it so OHair couldn't keep it out of the left trees and he lost trust in Foley. I heard Foley say this himself.

Interesting to see where Rose goes moving forward. His career seems to have gradually gotten better as the years have gone on - starting making cuts, good performances in Europe to winning and then getting the Order of Merit before moving over to the States and doing much the same. This is definitely the most prolonged backward step that he has had in some time. Maybe hitting the reset button like he seems to have done - new clubs, relatively new caddie and moving away from Foley will work for him but I wonder at very nearly 40 years of age, if he has the desire that was once there. He’s won his major, got to world number 1 and added the cherry on top with the Olympic gold. Is he going to work as hard as he did when he was 30? Is he going to be working as hard as the likes of JT, Bryson, Wolff and Hovland? I can’t see it.
