How do you feel about the modern, casual approach to golf?

I’m not massively impressed tbh.

a new member pocketed my ball last week. Was in the rough between two holes, I was walking towards him and luckily saw it, otherwise I’d have been walking back to the tee. Tried to explain why that wasn’t a clever thing to do, blank stare back.

a month ago same thing to a partner, this was even worse it was in the middle of our own fairway! Chap just walked across, didn’t even look at it or us walking towards it, and played it! Unbelievable.

seen more unrepaired divots and pitchmarks, more 5 balls, more bad dress and uncouthness, many different courses not just mine. I swear I’m retiring to an old fashioned Surrey members two ball course get away from this nonsense

I grew up a country club kid so the collared shirt, tucked shirts, no denim or cargo was enforced.  All the members had to behave themselves out on the course and finish in less than 4.5 hours unless it was really backed up.  Nowadays, the only rule I have for myself is wearing a collared shirt and not acting like an idiot out on the course but that's about it.  I've had the most fun playing with my buddies on a muni who are mostly single digit and +handicap golfers.  To me golf is a hobby/therapy where I can get out and get away from the all the bs of every day life.  Golf should be open to people from all walks of life, not just people who are wealthy.

not to be the old man get off my lawn kid but since covid, there has been a huge increase in golfers not repairing their ball marks.

not sure what thats about but it is rampant..JP must repair 4 a hole that others leave...

hey cart players, racing up to your ball is great but the walking 4 some in front of you is the normal pace, not you cart guys...

Think its great as long as you keep your music off are u really that ADD u need music.

It isn't ADD - I like having music when I play.  The question is, if you can't hear it - why do you care?

I understand if someone is blaring it from the cart and you can hear it in the next fairway - but if it's quiet, why do you care?

I am a casual guy. As an engineer, I wear jeans and a t shirt to work, so I don't want to have to "dress up" to relax and play golf. But I play ghetto 9 hole courses because I am cheap and I like the crowd.

I spoke to 2 local clubs, both did not allow denim, so that was out. 🤣

If you play music others can't hear, he's obviously talking about folks he can hear. Sort of like the tree in the woods thing...

I didn't mean to suggest that walking be mandatory for all, regardless of circumstances. My intention was to reflect that I think that walking should be the default, rather than the exception. If walking with a push cart is unreasonable for the individual, regardless of age, then they should, of course, be allowed to use a cart. Something along the lines of the rules they use at Bandon or at a lot of the courses in the UK where it is rare to see a "buggy" out on most of the courses.

Who wants to walk when its hot and humid out during late morning and afternoons? My game wilts when I get tired and nothing beats me down worse than heat. In the Spring and Fall, I can walk 36 holes.

The only thing that really annoys me is the damn music.

I spent 20+ years of my life playing live shows in everything from metal to country to jazz bands - and I have the look to go with it. I don't see too many other dudes out there with hand and neck tattoos, which I'm sure plenty of people have a problem with for whatever weird reason.

So my problem isn't music. It's that it's just rude.

And every time I'm vocally assaulted with this, it always seem be extraordinarily bland dad-rock garbage or, god help me, some boring blues nonsense. Can't it at least be something that doesn't suck if you're going to subject me to your incredible lack of self-awareness and courtesy for other people that don't need to hear "Hotel California" for the two hundred millionth time?

Buy some Airpods. They're comfy and stay put and you can listen to your Red Hot Chili Peppers Greatest Hits Spotify playlist till your little tasteless heart's content - just don't subject me to that horror, thanks.

Interesting reply. So you're partially against the music because of the 'commoness' of their choice of artist.

What if they were ripping some Guthrie Govan, Widespread Panic or Kings X?

I'd love to start a guitarist/golf thread. So many similarities.

As a pretentious old punk rocker/metal head, this is going to be the case with most people's musical taste anywhere.

On the course, though, it's definitely more the fact that it's there. I doubt there'd be such a cavalier reaction if I brought along my Sonos Move and was blasting Eyehategod's stellar "Dopesick."

I love it. I am all for being more and more progressive on a golf course. i have fun playing pure golf and trying to grind out a good score, but i also have fun drinking beer with my friends and listening to music/ having a good time (so long as we dont impact anyone elses round). I also never tuck my shirt in. playing in the state am.... shirts untucked. I love seeing people on the course with t-shirts on, especially if they are new to the game.

I said this in another thread but i hate slow play. i also get annoyed by people not fixing divots and stuff.

but i just realized what I hate the most, and this is probably more of an old timey thing than a progressive thing: I HATE smoke!!! if you need to smoke a cigar, get your own cart or something. it rarely happens because i almost always walk, but if I am playing some random course and need or want to ride half the time it will be stuck with some dude who wants to smoke a cigar... that is probably the only thing you can do that will cause a physical reaction/ cause damage (burning my pants/ causing me to return home with clothes that STINK is damage).

wish people were more self aware about that
