Stopping leather gloves sweating through

Recommended Posts

I live in a rather hot location and during the golf season I practice for 3-5 hours every other day. I like the grip of the full leather gloves, but they end up absorbing so much sweat they they are stiff as a rock and smell terrible after only a week. Anyone have any ideas? Is there like a lining I could use to stop the sweat getting through or?

i stopped wearing a glove this summer for this exact reason.  Try gloveless...my grip, setup, feel and ballstriking is now better than ever!

I have a buddy who swears by running them through the washing machine then stretching them out and letting them dry.  I haven’t tried it yet, seems like it would only ruin them.

Check out MG Gloves. They are a heck of a nice leather glove for a great price.  I buy them 10 at a time off eBay. MG has a store on eBay.  They are less then half of what you’ll pay at a retail store for similar quality from Titleist or FJ.

Is the sweat coming from the back of your hand or from your forearms? If it is coming from the back of your hand then you will need to get gloves that breathe better. If it is coming from your forearm then you can wear UV sleeves and should remedy the issue because the UV sleeves likely won't get saturated with sweat and start to leak down into your glove.  It just depends on how you sweat.

I know a couple of guys that use antiperspirant for their hands during the humid months and they swear buy it. Put it on, let it dry, then wear a glove or don't.

There are a ton of kinds but Dry Hands seems like a popular choice.

Agree with @mmack067

I use Grip Shield grip enhancer.  Couple of drops on each hand and it works great for keeping my palms and back of hands dry.  Keeps my glove dry too.

I don't think there is any way that you are going to be able to practice that much in a hot climate and not sweat thru a leather glove; about the best you could do would be to rotate very often.  You can wash leather gloves, and I've done it, but I've never been completely satisfied with the results.

There are gloves available, though, that have a synthetic back, which is where the sweat issues occur, and a leather palm.  Bionic makes one that I wear all summer; they really last, and it doesn't hurt them at all for the synthetic backs to get wet.  I won't claim that they feel quite as good as the all leather ones, but it's the best compromise you'll find.

I stopped wearing a glove probably 10 years ago, I'll second USCdrifter, no glove just like Freddie C.

Start using rain gloves.

Agree with this. I live in the southeast and back when I played a ton I would always wear a Footjoy rain glove in the summer. They hold up very well once they get wet and would last quite a while. The only downside is that you can only buy them as a pair (1 LH and 1 RH per pack). I usually ended up throwing away the right handed one.

If you're sweating that much wouldn't wearing both gloves be beneficial?

A quick fix is to keep a bottle of baby powder in your bag. I live and play in Alabama and the summers are oppressively hot, wether you’re practicing or playing. A little baby power on your hand or even in the glove when you start and maybe again at the turn and you will notice a huge difference. It still helps to rotate gloves, maybe 2-3 per round if you have them, but it will definitely prolong the life of your gloves and keep them dry while you play.

Have you ever tried playing with two gloves on? It’s not a fun experience....

It has to be better than having the non gloved hand be soaking wet?  I wear two gloves when I play and it only took a few rounds to get used to it but I just don't get why golfers only wear one glove as it makes no sense why you would neglect the grip on one of your two connections to the club.  I would apply this same thought process to a wide receiver or a baseball player also if I saw them wearing one glove also!
